I decided, for the first time, to stick my nose into a wormhole and see what I can see. Just flying a Probe frigate, so not much to lose, "why not?" I thought.
As soon as I get inside, a sudden situation requires me to afk. "Better go to a safe spot!" I think, so I dropped a bookmark halfway to a planet and warped back to it.
When I returned to my PC, it took all of about two seconds to realize what I hadn't done before going to my safe spot.
Bookmark the wormhole. :-|
I've spent a few hours now scanning around with my terrible Astrometic skills and amateur player skill at probing. I've found a couple of asteroid belts and a gas cloud (and got blasted down to about 50% hull by some sleepers that warped in to one of the belts, that'll teach me to hang around instead of always probing from my safe spot). I found one wormhole.. but it leads into another W-space system!
So now I'm at work, having switched my training queue to buff up my Astrometic skills, steeling myself for another scanning session this evening. Oh well!
I guess I could self-destruct but dammit its a matter of pride now.

I move you name your Probe, "Inconvenient Adventure".
...
Oh, you wanted a second opinion? You can either be patient and scan down a hole that leads to home and glory (a glory-hole, perhaps?), or you can nuke yourself back to empire.

Hi,
Looks like the wormhole collapse don you.
There is always an exit form a wormhole system, but it may lead to another wormhole system, and another, etc until eventually it leads out to Normal space.
Keep trying and maybe you'll find some ppl willing to help you in anothr w-hole. Or not, but you can have fun trying!

Oh, it might not have collapsed (well it may have by now) .. but there's something like 20 signatures in the system and it takes me a loooong time to nail down each one with my poor skills - both character skills and player skills!

Won't fit - 20 character limit on ship names
On the plus side, by the time you find your way out, you'll probably be good enough at probing to make a living at it

I ran into a similar problem where I forgot to bookmark the wormhole and couldnt scan it back out. I knew about where the wormhole was because it showed up on my map so I had 4 probes sitting around it all at .5 AU range. I was lucky enough this wormhole was popular and had ships flying in and out of it all the time, so instead of trying to scan the wormhole out which I was having no luck with, I scanned out the ships that were coming through. Worked with one shot and I was home free!! |

Edited by: Blaidd Dwrg on 25/03/2009 03:31:49 Actually I did the very same thing. Also in a probe but with a Expanded Launcher and lots of probes.
As soon as I warped to a safe spot I (lol) also remembered DOH! no bookmark.
So when I started to scan again I noticed a faint marker on the system map. Like the You Are Here tag but faded and it said Unstable Wormhole (even though I hadn't marked it).
Took all of 20 seconds to send in 4 probes at 0.25 and first scan gave me 100%.
Flew back, bookmarked it this time then went back to what I had intended in the first place.
So open your map and move it around. You should see the marker unless of course you wait too long.
Good luck

Oh now I feel terrible. I saw that too. Tried to select it, click on it, right-click on it, didn't get any response, so I gave up on it. Didn't occur to me to drop short-range probes right on top of it.
By the time I can next get online it will be nearly 24 hours since I originally got stuck, dunno what my chances are of the way out still being there.

This is spot on what is called "a learning experience"
Look on the bright side, you do not have a fleet depending on you to get them back

Those little markers on your map show up for every signature you find and warp to. However, if you get disconnected or log out, they won't be there anymore. The signature might still be in the same location, but you'll have to start from a clean slate.
btw, if you want to spice up your adventure, just take the first wormhole you find

Did this myself last night, but fortunately, it was in a k-space location, so I wasn't knackered. I will wager though that everyone who goes through wormholes will eventually do this.
Even vets make basic mistakes.

Captain's Log: Day three, lost in W-Space still. Moved into a second uncharted system. Wormhole behind me to the first unknown system has also vanished. Mapped out a number of asteroid belts and gas clouds - no Sleeper guards has yet targetted my frigate faster than I can lay a bookmark and warp back to my safespot.
Met a nice fellow killing some Sleepers in a Dominix. Unfortunately he didn't know of a wormhole back to K-Space, his group apparently have a POS in there somewhere and are camped for the long haul.

Maybe we'll find your log along with some sleeper loot sometime.
Good luck finding your way out.

Proper way out is to probe another wormhole there that leads to lowsec!

A Probe is a Minmatar astrometrics frigate. The Caldari equivalent would be a Heron. Imicus for Gallente and Magnate for Amarr. These ships have a bonus to scanning with probes.
As for how to scan with probes, there are several guides out there, as well as the Apocrypha probing article on the EVE wiki site.

Glad to see you got out ok, but given my experiences in low/null sec I'd have thought the above also heh.
But I don't know the first thing about scanning and whatnot, so you have one up on me lol.
Might have to read up on it some time.
