...And going back to XP.
See - I think theres a small factor in operating systems, they're great - until they refuse to do ONE thing for no reason.
In this case, Connect a USB Device (if you're curious, its an Access Virus TI2 Keyboard Synthesizer)
Theres absolutely NO REASON why Vista won't detect this device correctly, no reason. I've tried plugging the unit into an XP machine - fine. Flawless victory no less.
Vista however, well its just like a ****ing train-wreck.
So - Back to XP. No doubt my system will run faster anyway, and I'm pretty sure theres NOTHING that NEEDS Vista nowadays. (Except maybe DirectX 10? Or does XP have that now...)
Good riddance to an OS that sits there using 1gb of Memory for no real reason.

A story I'm hearing all too often these days.
Best thing about Vista is that it reduces the free friends & family tech support I have to do.

Its a weird one. Vista will try and screw up the driver installer whilst its installing - it just causes a ton of conflicts and the entire thing just doesn't work.
I managed to get it to connect once, but the Audio sends over USB were totally FUBAR.

I've hated Vista since I installed it. Delete two small (5K or so) files one after the other and the first just disappears while the second produces a progress bar that sits there for 30 seconds or more. Copy two files and always the second takes 5 times as long even though it may even be smaller. XP never had this problem, why does Vista?
On top of the user protection interferance that prevents you from doing what you need to do, nag screens till you turn it off, that ask if you really wanted to launch that app. Copy protections that were supposed to protect only copyright material that prevent you from making legitimate copies of your own personal videos from camcorder, USB devices that just don't work or never work properly. Vista is a real comedy of errors, it's not surprising that most people are getting ****ed off with it.

I been thinking many times about formating my PC and install XP again! least everything works on it. unlike Vista.

Enjoy your XP, I will stick with Vista till Win 7. Vista is far more streamlined and versatile than XP. The only two problems it has are the UAC and driver signatures.

WTF??
Are you F-ING Serious?
You obviously have NO CLUE what you are talking about.
Look, nothing personal, but you could not be more wrong. Vista is nothing less that the single most bloated and cruft-laden OS on the market today! Good God man! Spend 5 minutes on Google and you can find out how bloated it is!
Vista has SIGNIFICANTLY higher system requirements than XP, even the BASE version. It needs more RAM, more CPU, and a MUCH larger hard drive JUST TO INSTALL THE OS. It will sit there and use up 1GB of RAM DOING NOTHING! Don't even get me started on the DRM subsystems built into it!
I realize that you really want to justify to yourself having that bloated monstrosity of an OS just so you can have a few new shiny toys (Aero, Widgets) to play with. But seriously, at least be realistic. You're just making yourself look silly. Fix the Wardec System! Upgrade the Probing System! |

Do you have any idea what you are talking about?
What didn't they say about 98? What didn't they say about XP(Holy jesus christ, it was bloated too back then!).
Vista runs faster than XP on my windows PC, and I'm a mac user.
Quote: It needs more RAM
It's called caching. If you can afford Windows, you can afford at least 2gb of ram. On 2gb of ram, Vista is fine. It's hard to get a computer WITHOUT 2gb today. Quote: more CPU
Got any proof of that?
Quote:

Well, such is life. Harddrives are getting much cheaper anyways. It's impossible to get a harddrive today where the OS itself takes up a significant amount of space. Vista takes up between 10 and 20gb, which is nothing these days.
Quote: It will sit there and use up 1GB of RAM DOING NOTHING!
Other than caching things, of course Even Linux and Mac does that.
Quote: Don't even get me started on the DRM subsystems built into it!
Do tell. The whole thing about DRM is pure FUD!
Quote: I realize that you really want to justify to yourself having that bloated monstrosity of an OS just so you can have a few new shiny toys (Aero, Widgets) to play with. But seriously, at least be realistic
I'll happily take a better OS which runs faster on my modern hardware than XP.

But so are you. So that's a moot point.

All of the above is why in a couple of months when I make my own pc it will run XP rather then vista.... Its simply better and I have no idea how vista works(which means fixing the said problems is a pain).
The only worry I have about xp is that things might not be compatible with it in the long run, but more then likely that wont be the truth for a decently long time.

We could sit here and argue tech specs etc, but I say the proof is in the pudding, I have used XP and upgraded to Vista, pound for pound I have found Vista much better, the best thing about Vista is that it kissed goodbye to BSOD's for me.
Each to their own at the end of the day.

Im sticking with vista, even though i like xp better for a gaming platform.. vista has too much not needed bling for me..
But as i got 4gb ram,4gb gfx ram and a quad core, 32bit xp would be.. meh.. so switched to vista. and its a snap to set up raid on a vista install, compared to xp.. if you dont have a floppy (who does anyways+), or some tampered bootdisk that is.
i just like to think everything is running smoothly and as i should, rather than fiddle with hardware support/driver issues and what not.. vista does an overall better job for me..

some more practical experience, as opposed to would-be expert talk (could do that too, mind you, im very capable of acting like i know what i'm talking about)...
I had vista on some work PC's, hated its guts, mostly for being different where things were more than efficient enough, and as a close second because it was sluggish on decent hardware compared to XP systems both at home and at work. Never wanted to touch it because of such experiences.
Win7 beta got me curious, installed a dual boot on my home system (which is a 2 year old system, 2gb mem and 2.6 ghz dual core, rather unimpressive by today's standards), and found myself to rarely touch the xp install again. I am quite impressed considering it's a beta build. I didnt have to tweak it more than a new XP install, most of the time just as stable, some very rare driver problems with old bits and shiny does not make sluggish. The new explorer version almost lives up to the shell I used in XP (because frankly, that version of explorer is a monster) and the only real problem I have is that things are in other places and the abundance of 'wizards' designed for toddlers has been stepped up the usual per-new-version amount.
tl;dr: Win7, try the public beta, I was not disappointed. -----

I'm sorry to hear it hasn't worked for you and you'll have to stick with a OS that's almost a decade old. I'd like to say that Windows and musical instruments is not the best combination. And if you add USB, you just put things worse.
I'm looking to buy an Audio Interface for guitar and it's taking me a lot of time, because not all AI manufacturers have Vista 64bits drivers ready. Also, I rejected the USB ones, frankly because the USB interface is too crowded in a regular PC (mouse, keyboard, the ocsasional flash drive, printers...) I prefer to use the less used FireWire interface. And also because I read about some USB Audio Interfaces that had problems with some of Intel's chipsets (Intel 915G, Intel 915P and Intel 925X) My previous machine had one of those chipsets, so I couldn't use any USB audio interface.
To be honest, if I wanted to buy a machine for audio use, I'd buy a Mac. ----

Its also a lot faster and less resource hungry. Its still crap since its Windows with all its flaws, but its probably going to be the best Windows yet. I will probably install a copy of it for gaming only.
But for all other needs, get Linux.

I've had Vista running well on my machine for a while now (after beating it, largely, into submission and violating various parts of it's registery and services) but I'm NOT really happy with it.
I have been toying with going back to XPPRO too but I know that's not *really* going to improve the situation.
I've been using Windows 7 on a test machine for a while (and liking it) so I'm thinking about moving my production desktop to it. It's that or try Linux again.
So here's a question for you all:
Eve + Vista Eve + Linux Eve + Windows 7
Any preferences/horror stories?
