The term oriental derives from the Latin for east. Oriental means anything to the east. It was used for lands, people, cultures and goods. Historically it meant the middle east, rather than the far east. At one point the Orient was a Roman province. Later it described a Muslim, or Islam, and then later it came to mean people and places further east.

It's not usually considered to be pejorative - you could just as easily use "An Asian", or any other racial epithet in a pejorative manner.

What makes "Asian" so PC? Lumping people of vastly different cultures together (e.g. Indians and Japanese) just because they're different from "us" seems pretty racist to me.

Also, American is way too broad. You should use "United State's educational system" as that suggest everyone from the Americas.

Asian is more PC than Oriental for the exact reason you describe: because GÇ£the orientGÇ£ doesn't really exist any more GÇö it's a historical relic that is as useful today as thinking of Scandinavia as GÇ£HyperboreaGÇ¥.

Asian is just as sweeping a term, but it describes the actual world as we know it, not some fanciful notion of what the world looked like that existed a millennium (or two) ago, nor does it evoke the (actually racist) colonial-era romantic view of the mystical world GÇ£over thereGÇ¥, which drew on similarly fanciful notions. In other words, Asian is more PC than Oriental because it's not ignorant nor is it drawing on inherently racist world views.

Sure, it doesn't preclude GÇ£AsianGÇ¥ from being used as a racist statement GÇö like you say, any kind of ethno/geographical grouping can be used that way GÇö but it doesn't come with the historically ingrained ignorance that GÇ£OrientalGÇ¥ does.
