I'm a bit bored, now my problem is that I am...a grumpy old bastard when it comes to games, basicly i'm looking for something to kill time, some game I can bury myself in for a few days and forget time, the universe and everything, mainly an offline singleplayer game but I won't say no to a brilliant mmo/multiplayer suggestion.
As mentioned in the topic, I will pay 100 million isk to whoever suggests a game I end up going gaga for (PC).
Games I enjoy/have enjoyed include: Total War series (though not so fond of Empire. Hitman Series Dungeon Keeper Mount and Blade Baldurs Gate Arcanum of steamworks and arcana or wth it's called Elder Scrolls Call of Duty series Operation Flashpoint The Typing of the Dead
etc
Anyway, blast off with suggestions, i'll probably have tried and not liked 90% of your suggestions, but the worst that can happen is that you win 100m.
Oh, if I get two suggestions I frikkin dig i'll pay 100m to each (or 200m to one person).
So get spamming, you can list as many games as you like but it'll be positive if you add a link or small synopsis for the games you list.

Med Total War as portugal or the Rus.
Hitman blood money Opera house only close kills. A New Life. Kill all the FBI agents WITHOUT alert. Heaven and Hell bombs in pit WITHOUT getting caught. Also Kill both other assassins publicly WITHOUT alert and without changing disguise.
Rome Total War as parthians or dacians.
Just a few thoughts. The others I know nothing about.
Civ 4 on Deity is always a balst.

I was going to suggest ETW, but you seem to have tried it. Then I Was going to suggest Oblivion but you seem to have tried that too. Then I saw Typing of the Dead and thought "YES". I loved that game and only played it once.
You might try the demo for Supreme Commander and see if you like that. I find it quite fun. It's an RTS with a rather large scope. You might also try Dawn of War 2. I haven't played it but I've heard that some people like it. If you want a decent FPS, FarCry2 isn't too bad. I enjoyed the open-endedness of it along with the environment and sheer map size. -------------

Good suggestions but so far i've tried all of them, but don't give up folks, somewhere out there is the game of my dreams! at least for a few days.
Oh, I do have a thing about killing civillians (don't get on my case, it's a game not reality), not so much into zombie slaying, I mean, whats wrong with plain old people eh?
But butchering civillians in Hitman? loved it, haven't really found many games that cater to that though.

I also have to say the fall out series since there is so much you can do in that game.
I also have to say for an mmo Age of Conan. Once we got past the scanner autoloop issue I have been glued to it and now I am ashamed that I even bothered with WAR and it's absolute ****tyness compared to the beauty of this game. The graphics are top notch, the lag is almost non existent, this isn't a generic good vs bad sword n board, and aside from the main towns/cities its open pvp.

Mass Effect, Dead Space, Project Reality(Epic Battlefield 2 Mod), The Civilization series, and the Europa series are all great fun.
Mass Effect and Dead Space are both your singleplayer-offline games, both very fun to play, especially on PC IMHO.
Project Reality is BF2 minus the lonewolves and plus a TON of teamwork, great game if you work well with others :P
Finally, the Civilization and Europa games will satisfy all your megalomaniacal needs!
Hope you can find at least one of these enjoyable!

Judging from the the games listed, the first game that comes to mind is:
Planescape: Torment
If you haven't already played it, make sure to add it to your TO-DO list. It's kinda like BG/IWD-series, only very sinister, dark and bound to make any player chuckle quite a few times from odd dialogs. Pretty solid RPG-experience (ie. different dialog options depending on stats and so on) but an oldie that might be tricky to run on newer systems. If you can dig this title up, it's sure to entertain for hours, and it kinda asks for a re-play too.
Enjoy, and fly safe..

Infantry
Seriously, ancient 2d top-down shooter that SOE runs (ew I know). Its free again, and the population is beginning to pick up again!
There are some new zones in development by the players, and some like Kleos Conquest, is actually a fairly fun game, although the round times are a bit long.
Give it a go, it'll run on anything. It came out in later '99 early '00, so it'll probably even run on your cell phone LOL Oh god how did this get here I am not good with computer |

Tried ArmA? ArmA2 is out soon mind you. It's from Bohemia who developed Flashpoint. It's basically the sequel (although CM own the name).
Overlord was kinda fun. It's a quirky first person tactical game where you play an evil overlord. Not perfect but I liked it a lot.
Presume you already gave Planescape a go.

Seems like you have roughly the same taste in games as I do.
First off, a couple of shots in the dark:
If you like adventure games, then you should play the Myst games, especially the first two (Myst and Riven, respectively). You could also try out Dwarf Fortress, it's a rougelike, fortress-building game. Not everyone's cup of tea, but I thought I'd throw it out there.
Now for some more educated guesses.
Galactic Civilizations II (and whatever expansion packs you can get your hands on)
X-COM series (Enemy Unkown, Terror From the Deep, Apocalypse) old really good tactical squad something-or-other.
The rest of the games I was going to suggest seems to have been suggested by others already. Good luck with finding a game1
Oh! Another great adventure game for anyone who would like to play one; The Longest Journey.

As people have said, Planescape: Torment is excellent (though I don't find it the best RPG it is the best story-driven one I have played). Left4Dead/TF2 if you have friends. Beyond Good & Evil as well. And if you have a PS2, try Ico or Wanda to Kyozou (Shadow of the Collosus in EU/America).
And though it's highly unpolished thanks to Ubisoft rushing it out the door, Dark Messiah was fun.

Ok, I've got some left field ones but...
For a totally trippy storyline: Perimeter (Have a look here for info on the game) --seriously, one of the strangest experiences I've had in PC gaming, but very absorbing, challenging, and with many unique and novel aspects.
I also enjoyed Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl. Lots of bugs, unfortunately, but a very entertaining sandbox-ish game. Lots of exploring to do, and I heartily enjoyed looking up photos of Chernobyl and thinking "Wow, I nearly killed myself with a grenade near that" or "that's where I found that awesome artefact." It's got a similar learning curve to EVE too: the first mission's learning curve is remarkably reminicient of a noose.
Also, for casual fun, grab Audiosurf from steam. Very innovative little game for killing time - surf your favourite music. Very entertaining.
I'm sure fallout's been mentioned, but I'd like to make a special mention of Fallout 3. I loved it, particularly the vault full of hostile clones. (Gaaaaaary!)
Supreme Commander has been mentioned already, I recommend that highly too. Need a fairly impressive system to get the most out of it, and a lot of patience to play it; it's exceptionally slow paced. I love the strategic options though.
I'm also a huge fan of Team Fortress 2, but its a long way from 'offline singleplayer.'

Ooh I've got another one:
Stronghold (or Stronghold:Crusader, but NOT Stronghold 2)
--great fun, castle seige game. Set up a castle, design a farming system to provide food, quarry stone to build walls, harvest forests for wood, build better castle defences and man the walls / courtyards etc with troops to hold off periodic assaults. Very entertaining indeed, and great fun whether single or multiplayer.

GTA San Andreas.
One of the best GTA games, and really fun all around.
Battlefront 1/2.
I can play those games for a long time, and still like them.
Crysis multiplayer. Go to the Bros server.
Dungeon keeper 2. Get the most recent patch, and have fun.
Fallout 3 is fun but not as free-roam as it could get. should still occupy you for a day or two.
According to one of my friends this is pretty fun. I am about to start playing it (It is an online game)

Edited by: Unworldly1 on 31/03/2009 00:47:35 Edited by: Unworldly1 on 31/03/2009 00:44:42 I agree with the guy who said Company of Heroes - particularly when you add the expansion, Opposing Fronts. It was a LONG way outside of my usual genres; normally I only like a strategy game if I can turtle while I learn the ropes: Company of Heroes, you can only really turtle well once you've already learnt how to do stuff. It is, in my estimation, one of the best RTS games ever made.
I thought of another one too, which you've probably already played, but it's worth a shot: Freelancer. It wasn't as good as it could've been (with some more EVE-like freedom it would've been awesome... but as it is, it's a solid game, with a reasonable level of challenge, and a storyline that (until the end) kept me guessing - well, interested enough to keep playing, if not actually guessing :P. The ending is a bit... meh, but by that point you're invested in the game and you don't care so much. Also, hitting fighters with anti-capital torpedos is hilarious. Suckers never see it coming either :D
Oh, and of course, how could I forget?! *facepalm* Halflife Halflife 2 Halflife 2: Episode 1 Halflife 2: Episode 2
and the most entertaining of all (though the shortest :( ) PORTAL! Watch this and see why. Seriously, Portal is one of my favourite all-time games (can't believe I didn't think to mention it, even if it's already been mentioned, it can't be overestimated in awesomeness). You'll laugh, you'll puzzle, you'll die, and you'll laugh summore. It's fantastic.

Edited by: Cpt Placeholder on 31/03/2009 01:34:32 So many posts and no one mentioned Deus Ex or System Shock 2 yet, I guess I win. If, by any chance, you don't mean Morrwind by Elder Scrolls, then play it, it's much better than Oblivion but that's just my opinion. Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption has an interesting storyline too. If you haven't played the sequel to Dungeon Keeper, Dungeon Keeper 2 yet, I suggest you do so, it's a worthy sequel. Since you liked Hitman, I'm sure you'll like Assassin's Creed too. Not that deep, but the Legacy of Kain series can be captivating too, I liked Blood Omen 2 and Defiance most. I'm sure No One Lives Forever can keep you entertained at least for a little while, it's rare to see such humorous games.
The game order is intentional. I didn't mention games that other people mentioned but some of them would be in this list if they weren't faster than me. I also suggest you check out this thread.

And if you like them; try Bioshock. Made in the same vein as System Shock 2, but it's not quite as good - still, it's a good step above your average FPS game.
Quote: Assassin's Creed
Another good game; if a little repetitive sometimes.
Also, the Prince of Persia series - the new ones that is: Sands of Time, Warrior Within, Two Thrones - are others I found entertaining; if you've played Assassin's Creed and liked it, you like these; the same works backwards.
Edit: Again, delayed brainwave: Thief 2: The Metal Age was an excellent game, well worth the sneak

Total Annihilation like the first 3d real time stratagy game. TBH, this game beats command and conquer. This game is just total war. Top 5 list for me.
Supreme Commander The follow up to Total Annihilation. Follow ups are normally crap but this one is bang on. More epic than Total Annihilation, be prepared for a war scaling several kilometers at the same time xD

If you do enjoy hardcore stragey games (something upwards from the Total War series), I recommend Hearts of Iron II (WWII), Victoria Universalis (1830-1930), Europa Universalis (1430-1800) or Crusader Kings (1066-1400). They're all created by Paradox Interactive. Another great tactical game is World in Conflict, or Battleforge (just released, both rely heavy on multiplayer but WIC has just gotten an equally awesome Soviet campaign).
If you're searching for yet another space-fyling experience (but a far more arcade one thatn EVE), why not try Freelancer? As for RPG, I recommend anything from Bioware (Neverwinter Nights [Fantasy], Mass Effect [Sci-fi], Knights Of The Old Republic [Star Wars]).
A good shooter will be difficult to get atm, maybe the new Call of Duty (which is said to be excellent again, even though its WWII - again. But this time, in the pacific). Or maybe the all-time favourite and hyped GTA 4?
Edit: Just read you liked Operation Flashpoint. It'll take some time until release yet, but be aware that Operation Flashpoint 2 + Arma2 are going to be released end of this/beginning of next year.

Haven't been many games last year that I actually bought after trying having said that, I have started playing a few free games, the best of which is probably quite old: Dwarf Fortress
The basic premise is you building defending and managing a fortress under a mountain (or plain, depends where you start ) in a generated world.
Think a cross between stronghold (you fend of growing sieges and wild animals), sim city (city management, including an optional full money based economy in the later game) and the sims, as unhappy dwarves can go into a variety of strange moods, including the macabre, where they butcher another dwarf and become a legendary craftsman by making something from their bones .
You can get the game here: Dwarf Fortress with added graphics tileset for easier/prettier play
2 other essential links: Dwarf Fortress Wiki (Believe me this one is invaluable)
Dwarf Fortress video tutorial series (Watch first 3 or so before starting, then watch as you need, alternatively, just get stuck in and learn through sweat and tears )
Water pressure is modelled properly, so don't dig into the bottom of a river bed from below (or for that matter, a lava pool ). It also includes pumps and pressure plates for traps and other devices (one of the guys on coldfront IRC built an 8-bit computer using these, and Entity has built a set of water-powered repeating-action spear traps).
A last warning, ware the catsplosion .
The game also has 2 other RPG like modes, one where you go around accepting quests and conquering with a growing party, the other where you go around a world exploring in a more archaeological manner.

You'll be battling online against a lot of other players on ladders. For all your meta-gaming needs, you're allowed to run more accounts also. And I've yet to hear about someone getting banned for scamming.
And, did I mention it's FREE?!
The client can be a bit fruity at times. It leaves very little memory footprint, but yet it gets low frames per second at times. It's far from gamebreaking though.
Enjoy, and fly safe..

Edited by: Lawl Clistina on 31/03/2009 14:04:35 i like farcry2 for blowing up stuff - ride through the land and shoot at whatever you come across just for lulz (usually keeps me entertained for a hour when spinning a ship in hangar doesn't help)
then battlefield2 as the classic multiplayer fps for longer sessions
hmm, what else, maybe crysis for its visuals and story - one of the best singleplayer fps and one of the few ones i had patience to finish. |

Silent Hunter 3, you play as a U-Boat commander, hunting convoys, its redicoulously hard, and frustrating, you can play for hours and never find a thing, but when you get your sights trained on a nice fat tanker, and the Mine sweepers sart closing in, its adrenaline pumping stuff

lets see...
People have mentioned TA or supcom, so ill skip those.
Instead, go find a more open version: The Spring project. Think TA, but with player-made units/stuff instead. Unfortunatly, its mainly multiplayer... Although the 'chicken defense' games can be done singleplayer...
For offline, you may want to look into x series: x-Beyond the Frontier/x2:The Threat/ X3: Reunion, and then X3 Terran Conflict. The storyline isnt exactly amazing (ive only really liked the story from x2tt/x3r), but it does give you the feel of a huge universe waiting for you to explore it. At least the first time you play... The second time, pick a different start, and play from the view of an assassin... Or tradesman, or station manager... It offers TONS of replayability, which seems to be what you are interested in from your OP.
As well, there is this one internet spaceships game, some MMO... damn, cant remember the name. Something about adam? No, that cant be right...

My two cents:
The Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War series, especially DoW2. Singleplayer campaign is a bit meh, but online mp is pure fast-paced RTS awesomeness.
Max Payne 1 and 2. Shooting bad guys in the face bullet time-style never gets old

What the what now? I thought it was just some space rts, elaborate!
As for my inactivity in the thread atm, I decided to give "native expansion" mod for mount and blade another go and its got me hooked for a little while (to those who mentioned mount and blade, if you look at the OP you'll find I beat you all to it and thus i'm awarding THAT 100m to myself).
Anyway, someone pop into detail on sins of a solar empir eand this stuff arvald's talking about, if I end up getting hooked on that i'll toss out isk to the first person who suggested it and whoever gives the best explanation of what the hell all this 1.000 planets on the map business is all about.
After all it's a "long walk" to the "store" my "energy" ratio will take a hit and it'll take me like two hours to "walk" to the "store" *wink wink nudge nudge*

How it works is like a Space RTS, that can span over systems.
Every planet is its own little battlefield, and you have to destroy all enemy planets to win.
Now sometimes there can get to be tons over tons of planets. The most I have ever seen is 500 but there are custom maps that can technically get infinitely large.
It is fun because it isn't just going around killing things, there is some minor politics with the AI, or actual politics if you are playing with other players.
another key point of the game is saving online games, so those long games can be continued.
It is a pretty fun game, and would recommend it.
And there is not many things more fun than watching your fleet fire huge missiles at the residents of some poor-unsuspecting planet. Some of those explosions can get about the size of a continent. ------------------------------------- My other alt is a Ferrari |

I'll be logging in to award Arvald with 100m for getting me interested in sins of a solar empire, I know other people mentioned it before him, but i'd already played the first bit of the tutorial and quit when I thought it was just another space rts.
As mentioned in the post, gief synopsis, arvald introduced me to the features I like about the game so he wins the pot.
However, i'm not low on isk yet so i'll keep the 100m prize up for whoever can find me *another* game to get hooked on (no harm in planning ahead).

Edited by: Quantar Raalsken on 03/04/2009 01:56:53 The Homeworld Series is a MUST
if not Cataclysm then at least HW1 and 2
they give the cut scenes by doing black and white animation which ads quite a nice element to the story plus HW is what INSPIRED Sins of a Soloar Empire (Sins was said to be the RTS that Homeworld fans have been waiting for...imo in think HW3 is )

hope i dont stupid if u already played it
also try Red Alert 3 Uprising
i was in the beta for RA3 and its lots of fun i just havent had the time to get to it my self
try to beat ur times the commander's challenge and they have Ric Flair in there
i can almost guarantee that ull have fun firing bears out of the man cannon
here u can see most of the units in the game (BTW the bull frog has the man cannon) ================================================

You like the same stuff as me so I might think of something;
Try Star Wolves.
Little known game by Russian developer but it's good once you get into it.
Imagine a single player version of Eve Online where you control multiple characters as a mercenary outfit like an rts but limited to one system a mission taken where you can be quite non-linear on some maps and you can pause and you pretty much have this game. Missions branch out into tree's and sometimes end up making choices so there's replay value.
Massive inventory to pimp out your mercs fighter ships with.
Pilot skill plans.
Run around with your mothership vessel and collect as much loot from each level as you can.
Your pilots ships eventually get ridiculously teched out.
Your pilots grow in number.
News events.
Several different endings to the main storyline arc depending on the choices you make ingame.
Massive fights at certain stages that your small band has to alter the tide of.
Although it was a few years ago by now I played it It was great and the graphics were great then, not sure if they still hold up now though. Sorta inbetween Eve classic and Eve premium I think.
if you disagree with me then you should probably post a response and stop reading my signature. |
