Thernys while I may agree with you on the state of society at the moment I just have to point out that Eve is a game. It's not a test of will, character, moral fiber or a second job. It's supposed to be fun. It's great that Eve is challenging, deep, requires a good deal of thought and rewards long-term planning and goals, but at the end of the day if it's not also entertaining then what's the point?
The earlier posters aren't asking for an easy button; bottom line is they just want to spend more time enjoying the game rather than wasting that time on a tedious game mechanic.

i don't understand all the complaining about the new probing system, its a vast improvement and much faster than the previous system.
i've had no problem scanning down exploration sites or ships, i've scanner down log offs, exploration site runners and mission runners, all were faster to locate than with the old system, except perhaps scanning for a domi due to the drone trick with the old system. exploration sites are also faster, the guristas 10/10 is probably the most time consuming and only requires 6-8 minutes on average with the old system this could take 40 minutes depending on your luck.
the only improvement that would be nice is a tag or filter system to remove sites already found from the display, its fine as is for a few signatures but when you have 3 or 4 sites within an au or 2 the interface gets clogged and difficult to keep track of.
in short, the system is fine, your doing it wrong.

i still find it very useful to have 8 probes, this allows you to have 4 probes set at long range over a group of tightly packed signatures guaranteeing you'll only get 1 return for each. then you can use the other 4 probes to zero in on individual signatures.
best way i've found until tagging / filtering of sites is added.

How exactly did you manage to mess up a quote so badly? Anyway, yes I would. The previous system may have been slower and less interesting but it was also less aggravating. Please don't presume to know me.

Originally by: Turiel Demon It's not that probing is difficult, its that the frustration level is nigh-intolerable in the above situation, especially if you're the prober for a group of people, all waiting on you to find something interesting; this, IMO, is indicative of a flawed game mechanic.
^^This really.
Thernys seems hell bent on the notion that we are all asking for a 1-button, find everything button which is absolutely not the case.
Time sinks are one thing. Mindless, tedious, pointless timesinks are another. When it is just you affected it sucks, when it affects a group of people it is a busted mechanic.
CCP wants us grouped for W-Space and most of W-Space pretty much demands it. That is all well and good. Now however we are faced with 3-10 people just sitting there waiting on one guy (yeah...they could probe too but often are not skilled at it and/or necessarily fit for it...they grouped with the prober because of his skill at probing so they do not have to).
Personally I fly with a good crowd of people who (barring one guy) are a patient bunch but still stinks as the minutes carry on they the tedium affects everyone.
And there really is nothing worse than probing down the same hit more than once. I am very solid at probing, not elite but far from a noob at it, and while I almost always am careful to avoid that it has happened on occasion.

The deep space probes have had their strength halved but they are still better at finding out which type a site is much sooner than you can with core probes, they also help you determine where a signal is fairly quickly as well. If people are just dropping a deep space probe when they warp into system and using it once to find signatures then they aren't using them to full potential.
though they don't always show up within 4au of a planet most signatures are still found near planets, so once you know the general location of a signature or set of sigs you can recenter the the deep space probe and lower it's range which will generally give you quick info on what type of sig is which in a group.
Whenever I'm scanning down a cosmic sig I am constantly alternating between my core probes and my deep space ones.
