ok, my last 2 cents.
it looks like this bull-soft (eve) could work pretty good (read. without loosing conn. on log on/every jump, docking, etc) on Vista/windows 7 OS. however it seems that my sound card (SB live 5.1) which is working pretty well under XP is 'too old/not good enough' for Vista and bloody creative wont make drivers for 5.1 under vista (yeah, lets force a customer to buy a new one...) ...and Eve-Online it's only type of soft that is working badly under XP on my puter so...
fock it.
fock CCCP, for their lame programming, fock MS vista and MS lame programming, fock creative for not making drivers,
as i said, fock it. gonna manage to log in somehow to switch skills and wait till my accounts expire, then i'm gonne for good.
enough of this bull-****

A bit of good news. My socket closures seem to have decreased from ~5 an hour starting around March 10th to approximately 1 -- a very significant improvement. Moreover, I don't have to keep logging in to get a connection which stays up.
Disabling bittorent DNA (click the control panel, enable task tray icon, be sure to disable it every time you boot and don't need a CCP patch) helped some. But the real fix seems to have taken hold in the past week or so.
Keep up the good work!
Oh, and how hard would it be to reopen the socket connection under the covers? Abstract the whole TCP layer away from the presentation layer, manage the network stream at a level below where the application cares about TCP at all. That way socket burps would look like a burst of lag rather than a client crash to the user. |

It seems that something was done somewhere by someone as I have stopped having socket closures all of a sudden (I have changed nothing on my side).
However I had seen similar periodical changes before so I am just keeping my fingers crossed that actually CCP did something this time and fixed it.

Situated in Australia I am getting large packet loss(10%+) from a company in Singapore called SingTel from this IP specifically:203.208.145.106. The loss is constant. I am not sure what can be done by myself or CCP about an ISP in another country....pretty ****ty situation tbh |

I never used to have problems with socket closed errors, but now the game is unplayable. I am disconnected within 2 minutes of logging on every time.
Besides "socket closed", I am now also getting the error "The transport has not yet been connected, or authorization was not successful."
The problem has accelerated vastly in the last week or so. |

Alright, I did some more research into this and came up with a solution. Turns out that my Belkin G router had some sort of firmware bug that was causing my router to renew it's IP address more frequently than it needed to. This in and of itself wasn't a problem but when it renewed the IP address it reset my connection, even through it was receiving the same IP address. Updating the firmware has resolved this issue. I suspect that this reset, in conjunction with some of the StacklessIO networking changes that were made to the back end of Eve, are what caused my issue. Hopefully, this has helped someone else. If you have a Belkin G router, check your security logs to see if connection is being reset too frequently.

Same problem is becoming increasingly more frequent to the point where all i can do with confidence is change skills. This "socket loss" / "CCP error" has badly affected my ability to pvp, to apply to corps due to d/c all the time, i cant do ops, i cant do anything that puts my character in danger, not to mention the loss of many T2 drones all the time so i just dont deploy them when i do get the chance to log on. Im not the kind of person that is particularly good on computers so i dont know if theres alot i can do, all i can do is beg CCP to please try to resolve this problem any way they can, and hopefully it will be fixed pronto, otherwise im cancelling my subscription which is a shame and a waste of6 months or skills training. P.S. i have no problem like this with any other game or program on my comp.

after my experience a few weeks ago, i would strongly suggest testing be done around the voice system being turned on/off, perhaps even toggling ports for it on/off.
i had multiple cases where my audio was not working properly after having changed around various voice settings and channels in-game. i was disconnecting, having voice networking problems and then going straight into the socket errors. it was like voice networking errors were basically hanging, crashing eve and then causing more basic windows hang-ups.

I too experienced a socked closed on both my accounts at some point today, while doing ice cutting. I had two torrents going in the background.
It is rare for me to have a torrent downloading while playing eve, and I have had only one or two incidents of a "socket closed" crash for a very long time.

The only time I seem to lose my connection to the server (Socket Closed) is when I have Firefox running in the background, and I load a new page. Something about it is causing EVE to shut down, and I'm not sure what.

That is what I get at times.
Sit still in the station. Don't hit anything in eve except for the IGB ...
You can continue using the IGB but when you try to request anything that needs data from server it returns a closed socket.

Yup, I get what you and the poster above you get most consistently. 'course, I also get it idling anywhere in space...not just the station...happens as much as once every 5 minutes, although in some extreme cases I've simply just socket closed after jumping through a gate. The specific error the game spits out for me is Winsock Error 10054 ("Connection forcibly closed by remote host").
Absolutely no packet loss and no background Internet processes running (indeed, not even browsing the ol' Net!), good pings to all hops, etc. Have already filed a bug report/petition.

Same here, running multiple clients on same computer, after some time( 10-20 minutes ) of clients being idle they get this this "Socket Closed" error when trying to request market or wallet information etc.
In order to keep clients alive I put all charecters in fleet and on average every 5 minutes I type something in gang chat, this proved to be 100% effective in keeping them alive.
Important observation: Clients get closed in solar systems inhabited only with my characters or with very few other charecters, systems which are seldom or not at all visited for prolonged amount of time. In contrast in systems with 20-40+ people ( nearby mission hubs ) where there is lots of in/out movement my clients never get closed even after being idle for 3+ hours.

This is how the socket closed error started out for me, and was my initial observation. I had it limited down to the Abaim system and any systems up to 2+ jumps away. However, as time has progressed, I now get it more frequently...in some cases being idle for just one minute forces me off the server. Since my particular bug report on this matter has yet to be filtered, here's my full findings, minus all the files supporting it:
Quote: Socket Closed Error received after idle for more than 1-5 minutes (in space, dead space, or station). Also occurs after executing a jump, docking and/or undocking, warping to fleet member, or forming fleet. Game client will not close or report socket closed error unless player performs an action that requires data from the server (i.e. opening map with star filtering option "pods destroyed in last day" or opening the Market buy/sell information for a specific item Region-wide). However, player will be offline/disconnected to all friends.
Logserver logs show this to be Winsock Error 10054 ("Connection forcibly closed by remote host"). Wireshark data shows that EVE server resets connection without acknowledgment (a.k.a. notifying player client that it is doing so) from computer (a.k.a. Winsock Error 10054) and that when player performs get-data action (as mentioned above), client computer tries to re-establish connection with the EVE server but is rejected. The player is then ejected from their game client back to the login screen.

The only times it has happened to me is when I was downloading stuff via torrents while playing Eve. Just a normal http download doesn't matter, but even a slow (50-100k/s) torrent download will end up crashing the game and display "Socket closed."

I have been getting Socket Closed errors on and off for about the last year or so.
I get them every time I play eve, sometimes within 5 minutes and other times not for hours.
I never get them more than say 4 times over a period of 5-6 hours or so.
About 2 weeks ago, I did a whole 8 hour session, and got kicked from eve every 2 minutes or so, repeatedly, even at the login screen.
After this 1 day of hell, thinking that I may have finally fallen victim to unplayable eve, it has stopped and i haven't had one since.

I'll go get you guys a bug report tonight,
for me this problem only occurs when I have 2 clients running and are AFK long enough for windows to lock the screen. When I come back usually 1 client still works and the other one has a socket closed error.
Also had it a few times in huge fleet fights where the loading took longer than 5 mins. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Pinky: Gee, Brain. What are we going to do tonight?
Brain: The same thing we do every night, Pinky. Try to take over the world. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |

I'd just like to add that after changing DNS servers from my ISP to OpenDNS (a need brought to light by Youtube browsing problems), I haven't encountered a single socket closed error for a week straight now. Mind you, I can't prove that's what fixed it, but it's the only change I've made that correlates time-wise with my newfound EVE connection stability.

During my last visit to Sisi, which was roughly 2-3 weeks ago, I never had a problem and I always saw people posting about "Socket is Closed" errors while trying to connect. I just tried 2 minutes ago and now I'm getting that message for both my accounts.
I've restarted my router / modem / PC(s) (Vista + XP) and I don't have anything else running except Chrome and TQ on 1 account.

I wish I'd seen this before trying to log in for the supercapital event on friday/saturday. Every time I got to the front of the queue between 19:00 UTC on Friday and 10:00 UTC on Sunday I got the socket closed error. I'll definitely do this for all my future Sisi sessions.

I have started playing EVE with a new character only about 3 weeks ago. Everything was fine and I was able to keep the game running for hours on end. When my 2 weeks trial were done, I signed up and withing 3 days from signing up I started experiencing "socket closed errors" every 5 - 15 minutes apart. This is SO frustrating that I am quickly starting losing interest. At first I thought it had something to do with my internet connection, but there is nothing wrong with it as I am able to access all other internet applications. The weird thing is, that my wife (who have been playing for a year and a half already) have started experiencing the same issue at the same time than me. Is there anything that can be done in order to resolve our problem? Please let me know and I will assist where ever I can.
