I have an awesome idea for a class of ship that would do the job of what a mortar does on the battlefield today. Sit far back and lay down a good chunk of volley damage while having NO tank. Make it T2 using the frig chassis and give it say 3 cruise launchers. Maybe give it a slight speed bonus while while cloaked with an improved cloaking device. Oh and also give it a few mid slots for things like sensor boosters, target painters, sensor dampers.
This would be a great addition to the game. Thanks.

xvantuzx you are apparently unaware of the changes on the test server to the stealth bomber class.

Once upon a time, In a universe far far away, Cruise launchers could be fitted on T1 frigates and cruisers.
CCP changed that for a reason.

I think this idea might have had merrit only if you suggested that it worked like a remote smart bomb.

You mean like you could sit somewhere else in the system and fire this uber smart bomb through a suicide ship?

I dont mean like AU away but say 25kms, low damage but area of effect, good for taking out swarms of drones before they get to target or help out a fellow ship thats being swarmed by frigs/drones. Could also target a ship thats being repaired by repair drones.

This is false... but standard launchers could fit 2 heavy or 1 cruise missile.
Heavy launchers could fit 1 torp or several cruise missiles.
This was changed.

Edited by: Hesperius on 16/04/2009 17:00:01 Since you don't get it... It was called a stealth bomber, then they put torps on it.

Basically what you are saying is you want the old Stealth bomber back. and really that's just not going to happen.
Personally I'm looking forward to the changes the new modified SB will bring to the battlefield.
But really all I'd say to this request is live with it the old SB is gone learn to adapt to the new or it will just pass you by.

It is a totally different ship now. The role the old SB filled is GONE. I will give this new ship a go and see if it is worth its weight, but that will not change the fact that there was no need to kill the class and put something else in its place.
From what I understand the entire idea of changing the ship I flew was that people complained that it was not "stealth" and it was not "bomber". That is fine (although if people really want to get picky over terms used they should start to look at invulnerability fields), but there was no reason to take the ship, class and role away from us.
So yes, what I want is what was formerly know as the stealth bomber. You are probably correct that we will never see another ship where tactics, planning and wit trump SP ever again.

I don't see it as just another ship that is better with more sp rather than tactics used with it, in fact I feel its broadened the tactics you can use in small gangs, take a few of these with a mini Recon with target painters and you can still go for smaller ships.
Though I can certainly understand the feelings of resentment to this new ship which only got there because certain people whined about it so much, because they didn't think about how to fly it properly.
Good luck with the idea but I think as you say a ship of that type is probably gone for good. ---

No there is a difference between a Stealth Bomber and a mortar type craft. The Stealth Bomber is a direct fire weapon, meaning that it locks a target and fires directly at that target causing x amount of damage.
A mortar type craft is an indirect fire type ship that would lob a round to a certain area where the impact would create x amount of damage at the intial impact point, with varying degrees of damage being done around it.
A mortar type ship would work like so, it would have half the range of a Stealth Bomber. Its round would be like a smart bomb going off. Once the mortar round has been fired and impacted the resulting damage would be just like the damage done by a smartbomb going off. The only problem that would aris is how would you decide on where to palce the round? The mechanics of EvE would not allow for adjusting fire using arcs and such but would instead have to a be direct lock like normal locking occurs.
Each mortat module could have a selection of how many round to fire at once, or in a succesion of a volley. One round: direct impact on the target two rounds: the rounds would impact 2 kilometers to each side of the target three rounds: One round would impact at the front of target at 2km with the remaining two rounds impacting to the left and right of the target at 2km four rounds: this impact pattern would be like the three rounds except that one round would impact behind the target.
This type of ship would be great when encountering a group of carriers or drone carrier ships. The drones of the target are deployed the mortar ship fires and takes the drones out leaving the target almost defenseless.
The only problem would be that any friendlies caught in the blast would be damaged as well resulting in standing or security loss.
There could also be various types of mortar rounds that do the different damage types like kin, therm, emp, exp. This would be a devasting battlefield weapon meaning that only two modules would be fitted to the ship. This would mean that the CPU/Powergrid for the modules would need to be adjusted so that only two could be fit per ship.

A 'mortar' suggests an arching indirect fire weapon to me. Obviously, we all know that our weapons don't arch. But the idea of a 'protected smart bomb' (or better, a dumb bomb), which you fire in a general direction and watch it explode? Sounds cool as hell.

Definitely sounds cool, but it's more of a new weapon than a new ship class... --
