SO.... after being jammed out in a Raven, and under fierce attack, I make the fateful decision to switch to F.O.F cruise missiles and open fire. I say fateful because after the first dozen or so volleys of missiles hit enemy ships and their attacking drones, the next 3 volleys suddenly decide to blast a member of my own fleet in a ferox nearby (at least I got the killmail with the final blow, denying our attackers).
F.O.F supposedly means friend or foe, which means the bloody things ought to be able to at least distinguish between friend or foe. Attacking a member of my own fleet would seem to be a "NO" flag in the missile's decision making process, especially when there are still enemies who have me targeted and are shooting at me, hitting me with ECM, warp scrambling me, etc.
We have used f.o.f missiles before, and never had this happen. Did something change? Did the great missile nerf also nerf the intelligence of these handy weapons? I sure would like to know before I load up a rack of them again in the future.

Well that's what F.O.F means it can target friends or foes.

FoFs will target the closest ship and hit it, be it friend or foe, just to clarify.

I've found your problem!
That said, your question has been answered. F.O.F. = Friend Or Foe. As in, they can potentially target and hit anyone, friend or foe.
This is why they're basically useless.

You've just discovered something that was true long, long before this patch. F.O.F missiles aren't worth training. I suspect they're not entirely useless soloing Guristas missions, but I'm only half convinced on even that point.

F.O.F's are not useless in the least! And if you say they are then you're stupid. It's really that simple.

I am VERY supprised you have never seen this sort of "problem" before. If you look back at old tornies you seen quite often that (Epecialy ravens), ecmed out ships would start to hit there own stuff.
Generaly; If its locked you its a "Foe", so this includes friendly drones repping you, friendly ships repping you, scan boosting ships etc, if it has a lock on you, and is nearest, they will hit it.
Im one of the few ppl who dont seem to think this is a bug. To be honest a missile ship is being given the abbility to STILL hit at nearly 80% of there damage. (Yep that DOES scare the ECMing ship when your a micowarp caracal flying right at it). No other wepon type can even fire.
In exchange for this you have to be a bit more carful about when to fire them.
I think they ARE bugged in that they suddenly start to hit undamageable structures.

Edited by: Blaise Elcadan on 07/04/2009 00:00:06 FoF Missiles will also lock onto structures. I was running a combat site I knew was full of ECM and loaded up some FoF, thinking to just light up my launchers and take a little longer to kill everything. The missiles just latched onto the nearest storage silo despite the dozens of NPC's that were targeting me. Evil Overlord Rule #20 Despite its proven stress-relieving effect, I will not indulge in maniacal laughter. |

The only time they were really, really useful for me was a level 1 mission involving *ALOT* of rogue drones. Every hit was a kill and not having to lock target was nice. 30 or 40 drones taken care of. Otherwise they can be annoying.

Useless? Ha! Just learn how to use them effectively. FoF rock for certain situations.

Guess you never played Wing Commander or Privateer or saw the history channel on the advancements of missiles... FoF - will attack Friend or Foe... but it EvE they will attack Friend, Foe, or the object no one targets that is close.

Actually it, IRL, reads the IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) beacon. If you don't have one or its broadcasting the wrong sequence you're about to get eaten. Planes, tanks, soldiers and other support equipment in the field has these beacons. Doesn't stop a human from overriding the system however.
EVE's FoF system is more "YAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYY *random boom*" from a missile with an IQ that makes my cat look intelligent. Either that or we have FoF missile but no IFF beacons.

As you said, the 'o' in FoF is OR. The missiles are equal opportunity targetters of friends OR foes. IOW, they aren't supposed to discriminate. Same as using a smartbomb; just more range.
