Simple 3 step 'visual guide' to spot scams
1) Number exploit: Don't accept contracts which are not rounded e.g. 1,999,8999isk, because your to lazy/tired/drugged to count all those weird looking numbers. Only scammer's use weird numbers.
2) Scammer's usually add a price after the contract link e.g. 'Mexallon x 103528 for 2,599,999 isk (25.11 isk per unit)' to make you think its a very good deal and that you should buy it fast. Your not fast enough, so let it be.
3) If the price it is to good to be true, it usually is. If it is no scam please convo Da Death to pickup the contract.
Those are just 'hints'. It not have to be necessarily a scam just because someone uses one of those special 'selling tactics'.

Nonono. Too obvious. You need to add at least a zero or two to the price if you want to be taken seriously… ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in =v=… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

i follow a simple step to avoid most of these scams just drop you wallet to what you expect to pay (move all your ISK to an ALT, or move the amount you think you going to pay to a alt then accept it on that character. if its what you think 'Win' if not, its still a Win cus you didn't get scammed)
yeah... the method is a little bit of hassle but i havn't been scammed on contracts yet. (tempting fate lol)

Also look at the type of contract. Those Freeform-contracts are almost always scams. Even when there is a linked item in the description one should still turn those down. Afterall, it's not an item exchange contract for a reason.
Edit: Direct trades are also known scam tactics. Ask for a contract! Usually the seller will say something like "But I don't want to pay the setup fee!", more red flags... --- Captain Braxo - Manufacture & Production - Hadean Drive Yards |

…also, do an exact-name search for what you want, (optionally) put 1 ISK as minimum price, and then sort by price. The scams will stick out like a sore thumb or simply fail to appear. ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in =v=… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

Yes?
Then it's a scam. Stop looking at Local.

The trouble with this system is that it is all too easy to accidentally use the wrong character when accepting the contract, and losing everything.
I keep the balance in my wallet below 750isk at all times, and keep all my 'liquid' cash in melted snowballs. I can then sell the exact number I need before accepting a contract. If I can't get it 'exact', I buy or sell a few rounds of ammo beforehand.

The REAL problem with this advice is that 99% of the people who fall for scams would have to be dragged kicking and screaming into a classroom to be force-fed this teaching and then would have to be forced to write it on the chalkboard 300 times in order for it to sink in. Because, really, the people who are stupid enough to fall for those kind of scams are too stupid to follow any kind of advice, they just beebop their way through life and then get bit and whine the ragequit.

In that case, all my contracts are scam, because I DO advertise them in Jita local too.
So much for trying to simplify thing. It is possible to oversimplify.

I disagree! i will happily run a scam in local while waiting 10 mins for my guns to cycle during the lag of a fleet battle!

If you're a one man corp, then its easy to fix against scams. Transfer all cash to corp account, leave 500k for those petty cash transactions. 'If you think' that the item is 2mil, then transfer 2m from corp account to private account. You not even have to be sure THAT IS IT NO SCAM lol because it will not transfer more then you have put in ur private account.
BUT PLEASE: Don't click accept corp! LOL

True, and I am sure people will always be scammed because of not using their brain. Let's hope for the best

Edited by: Agent Known on 08/04/2009 05:00:28 How about this: count the damn numbers
Or better yet, count the commas. I really wish they would bring back the pre-patch contracts where it would say the amount with words (i.e 7,200,000,000.00 (7.2 Billion ISK)).
Usually if you're in a market hub it's a scam anyway. 90% of contracts which sell stuff for way-below price are scams as well, because who wants to sell at a loss? If someone's liquidating they would just sell to the market anyway.
NEVER EVER EVER accept a freeform contract unless you know the person (in the same room within arm's length is advised ) because 99% of them are scams. They can just "fail" it and take your ISK.

its simple to fix, just break it up into sections, then they will be able to see how much they are paying for it, even if 9999999999 is put in they will be able to see it.
and this doesnt restrict the way contracts are made like suggestion 1, and will be very easy for CCP to implament

they just need to add rounding to the current mechanic that takes "10,000,000" and converts it to "10 million"... so like if you did "999,999,999" it would round it to "approx 1 billion"... or a value like "2,567,299" could be rounded to 2 decimals: "approx 2.57 million".

This is a non issue if you just spend an extra couple of seconds making sure the price is in fact correct.

That's the gist. It is a non-issue, for the most part. HOWEVER ... the way numbers are presented could get an improvement. And it's a worthwhile improvement, if for no better reason than to make the EvE client just a bit more user friendly.
I wouldn't argue the change to stop scams, but simply to make the game better.
