If i have the skills for a covert ops ship and decent scanning skills can i make decent money doing exploration (read: Not worhmholes) i am referring to non combat exploration.
Also how would this compare to say raven L4 running.

Well from personal expirience, doing exploration in an Ishkur in lowsec.
1) Income not as good as lvl4 missions - Radar sites are good, Magnetometric sites suck. 2) Gravimetric sites no good. 3) Combat sites can give good stuff, have had several faction ships and overseer effects.
I've done this the last month and income has been very sporadic and non-consistent.

Edited by: Lady Spank on 09/04/2009 10:11:04 You would need at least some combat ability too.
hi sec probing doesn't need a dedicated ship as the signals are generally easy to find.
the non combat (non unknown - plexes) signatures sometimes have some simple spawns of rats in... nothing too demanding but you'd want something other than a cov ops really.
Try using an AF instead? then you can run all hi-sec signatures with ease. Keep a salvager, codebreaker and analyser in cargo to swap out as needed.
It's a lot easier if you team up with someone.
as to profitability.... it's most likely not going to get you as much as level 4 mission running. Aside from the luck of finding good plexes, and then the luck of getting a good drop... there's the logistics of gathering everything up since you will be running with a small cargo hold and having to drop everything off at random stations around empire. you have to gather everything up once you have acquired a good amount.
It's a lot more fun!
but...
It's not an instant isk gain It's not a steady stream of income It requires more organisation Other people will try to steal your complexes loot Be prepared to find a lot of wormholes and Gravimetric sites you don't want.

Ummm why? I've been able to scan every single sig i've found (save for one...a 8/10 plex i think)
Why do people insist that you have to use HAC's etc...i mean every site can be done and the radar plexes can be found all the time. (great skills and 0.25au range).

A follow up post.
Generally people tell me im using the "wrong" ship for lowsec exploration. Generally i don't understand this statement because 95% of all the sites you'll ever find can be done in an AF. HAC's are unecessarily heavy and expensive for the nomadic lifestyle im doing atm.
Exploration sites is a finite resource, locally atleast, sooner or later you'll run out of sigs to find. And 90% of those are so pathetically easy that a HAC or even a group of a cov-op and a combat ship will make diddly squat.

Just ignore Zarro if he can't be bothered providing any supportive information.
An Ishkur is a decent choice... only problem soloing in one is the lack of slots and having to haul about the various explo mods in cargo... It's not for everyone but if you can be bothered it's a great choice. People use hacs because they can clean up super fast and run all the mods and have the extra cargo space for loot. with the upcoming agility nerf they may get used less, or will get i-stabbed more than tanked :D

Exactly, generally i've found that if you have a base with adjacent highsec system your alt can be used to pick up the loot.
Volume is generally small so for me it hasn't been a problem. (decrypters are 1m3 and salvage nothing).
About the slots, the Ishkur is perfect. I have every mod fitted. Core Launcher Salvager Analyzer Codebreaker and 2 blasters :)

Plus I'd rather risk a 30m AF than a 150m hac.
And it's more fun.

Apologies, I read too fast. For w-space, it'd have been the wrong ship. For lowsec, the Ishkur is a great choice.

I would say it is definitely profitable, I have been scanning in a imicus, and for any combat, I run back to station and get another ship, I know that's not the most efficient way, but that's how I do it.
Anyhoot, I would say it is very profitable, HOWEVER, you cannot rely on it for a steady stream of income. The beginning of this week, I made 80 mil on one site in high sec and then 60 mil the next day in another system, however, since then, I only seem to be finding pretty poor signatures, I don't even want to go over how many wormholes I have found as well as gravimetric and ladar signatures, I have found so far that radar sites tend to be the most profitable as well as some faction plexes, however I have not come across either of them for 3 days now :[
So when you are on a good run, finding good spawns, it's great, but don't take for granted as a continual steady stream of income like I did, coz you will fall flat on your botty :D

It's very random, but profits go up A LOT when you go into lowsec/0.0

Edited by: Valeri Tempest on 09/04/2009 18:08:55 I have been almost exclusively scanning non WH space in 0.0 for the last few weeks, i run a typhoon setup for guristas tank since the space I am in has only guristas, I have found a good number of arch/salvage sites, and one guristas fortress plex. the salvage sites usually have 2 bpcs of data or tuners and some perfect/normal salvage, the arch sites usually have salvage and arch cans and have had guristas tower bpc's as well. The fortress plex had an 8.5 mil DG BS that dropped a DG control tower BPC worth about 550-650 mil. each arch site drops 10-20 million with the possibility of a gurista tower bpc worth 50-250 mil. salvage sites average 10-50 million if you make tuners, and some rare invention helpers that can be worth up to 50 million also. Gas sites are harder to quantify since you have to be able to find a buyer and trasport large mass items but can be worth 25-100 million with the right logisitical operation.
my universal explore fit: Typhoon 3X1400 T2 1 HAM 2 heavy launchers 1 salvager 1 probe launcher
1 arch decrytor 1 hacker 1 100mn t2 ab
6 t2 hardeners 1 t2 large armor rep

I change ships as well, but this may change with the lower CPU core launcher. I mine low sec hidden belts when they have Gneiss, Ochre, or Crokite. I also harvest any gas I find. Of course, Mag and Radar sites. And I usually work the plexes, too.
I like exploration because I like variety (combat, ore, gas), and I enjoy find hidden things. And the occasional cat and mouse play with pirates in low sec is entertaining.
Is it worth it? Hell yea!

Friends
hurrrr
for the easy ones a hac is a safe bet
harder ones a rr bs gang
for the super hard ones a full blown corp operation 50 people + like 5-8 cov ops pilots, logistics teams and the damage dealers in droves.
