Vaden lounges lazily on board his Revelation, sitting in a cushy chair behind a stately desk made of authentic wood. He kicks his feet on top of his desk, scattering a few papers. He holds a small bottle in one hand and a small clear bag of pills in the other. He muses over which to take for a moment, then opens the bag and takes two of the blue pills, placing the bottle back into his desk. After just a moment his posture relaxes even more, eyelids drooping slightly and a slight smile even creeping to his face. Finally, he speaks.
Greetins, my fella capsuleers. Upon my recent return to empire, I decided to do somethin that I haven't done in a good lon while. Namely, I looked up my family. Not to my surprise, but they had been arrested and executed by the MIO. Likely fallacious charges, you know how the Ministry is. I had lon ago detached from birth family, preferrin the company of capsuleers. Indeed, I have a new family in Ghost Festival. But upon the 'tragic' news of my birth family's demise, it got me wonderin. So I ask you, my fella capsuleers, how often, if at all, do you keep in contact with your biologica family?

Every day, if possible. My Sisters and I watched the Kimotoro Vs. Makiriemi constellation games marking the start of the Kariola Trophy Splinterz tournament with our Dad last night. I lost ten ISK betting against the old man, too. - Verin "Stitcher" Hakatain. |

It's a shame, unfortunately, that as far as family goes, I have none.
Well, that's not entirely true.
I was born under the short-lived tube child program the State ran. I suppose you could call the people I was born with my family, but many of them I hardly even remember.
The one I do, well, let's just say he ended up with Concord's law enforcement division, and I have a security status of -9.86. Shame, really, I like the guy. ------- Andreus Ixiris: This is what he doesn't believe I actually believe about what Caldari believe. SolusLunes: My head hurts. I must concede this round to you, sir. :( |

I regularly visit my mother, who looks after my child most of the time too. Don't know my father but hey, can't have everything I suppose. It's quite refreshing visiting them.

I talk to my grandfather every week, the rest of the family are harder to get hold of but Pappy usually knows what they're doing so i know that they are okay even if he wont tell me what they are doing or where they are. My brothers are the worst trying to get more than a few sentences out of them over the comm is like pulling teeth.
I'm sorry for your loss Mr Khale. Even though you said that you were estranged from your family I hope you will remember them foldly and realise the part they played in making you who you are now. I cant imagine what id do if I lost my family, I would sooner someone take my arms and legs and all five senses.

My brother, yes, but then he is in space with me. The rest of my family ... no. Their life is hard enough, and I would not wish to cause them the trouble that a message from me would cause. ____________ My views are my own |

Pilot Khale, I speak to my daughter at least several times in a day. Though he is not family, in the strictest sense of the word, I keep track of Hakarris and make sure that he is taken care of. I do this as discreetly as possible as he would object most ... strenuously... should he discover I was "keeping tabs on him", as he puts it.
There are others whom I also speak to and interact with in a day, and some of them I value and care for like family.
My birth family is dead, my immediate family, that is. I have a host of cousins of whom I see little and care for even less. Well, thats not entirely true, some of them are worthwhile people, but most are lazy layabouts leeching off the family's purse-strings. If I could have most of them killed and get away with it, I would.
All of this aside, I am most curious, Pilot Khale. Why are you interested in this line of thought? I would assume a man such as yourself would have little regard for family, seeing them as weaknesses and possible pawns to be used by your enemies.
Then again, men of power often see family as a means to advance themselves socially and politically. To them, family is a means to seal alliances, assure loyalty, and allow them to better keep tabs on others. It is a way to co-opt those with talent and vision into working with them, and again, increasing their powerbase.
Are you one such person? I would not have thought so, from what little I know of you. Perhaps you would wish to enlighten me?

Vel listens while the messages play out on the bridge of the Shadow Heart. She gave the scanners a quick check before thumbing open the com to send a response.
"More family questions? Curious, but I s'pose it's natural. We are probably the only orphans in the universe that ever chose to be that way.
I talk to my mother once in a while. When I have the time, or she contacts me to keep me up on the clan's news. We're not precisely close, but she is my mother after all."
She pauses, as if about to say more, and then abruptly closes the channel and sends the message on its way. --Vel

I can increase my power without my birth family. Again, Ghost Festival is a much better family than those I was given by accident of birth. As far as why I'm followin this line of thought, well, I don't have a much better reason than bein high. You are correct, someone did use them as pawns in attempt to get to me. They didn't anticipate my apathy to their fate, however. Don't worry, I'll be findin who killed them and killin them in return on principle.

Pilot Khale, "on principle" or not, your intended vengeance in your House's name indicates that however little you may or may not have liked them, you are not apathetic to their fate. Were you truly apathetic to their fate, you would have shrugged and possibly laughed and said "who cares, I dont" and not given it another thought.
Instead, you are basically saying to whomever had them killed "I didnt like them, and didnt care enough to stop you from killing them, but now that you have, I am going to kill you because you killed them."
I know, I know. You didnt like them, possibly hated them. But whoever arranged for their deaths would not now be facing your wrath had they not killed your family. So you care enough to kill for them, and the audacity of the fool that tried to use them against you. Good luck. Should you need it, I have quite a few political connections and some contacts within the various Bureau's and Ministries and would be pleased to aid you in discovering the person in question.
I thank you for your candor in the matter of my question, at any rate.
Be well, Pilots.

As the closest thing Vaden will call family, I can assure you that he honestly believes every word he said. We may be friends of the highest order, but there are still things we strongly disagree on... this is one of those things.
Sadly, I can't say that I keep in touch with my biological family... They don't agree with my chosen profession, both as a capsuleer and someone who deals outside the legal guidelines set in place by that silly group of power mongers that run CONCORD. As such, I have begun creating a new family; my adopted daughter Jall'n, the closest thing to a brother I have ever known in Vaden, and a new group that is quickly making their way into my life with the Ghosts.
Family is important, but sometimes family isn't defined by biology.

Allow me to 'splain the principle here, Veron. As a Sani Sabik, you may guess that we place a stron' influence on the blood. While I care not for whom the blood belongs, the fact is that they did attack my family, which, as you may follow here, have my blood. That's right, the MIO attacked my blood, so now they must pay. It's as simple as tha'.

Hm, family... Interesting to mention. I ocassionaly visit the Caine estate on Athra, sometimes help with running it.. but it's been a hard time keeping up both the capsuleer profession and family visits. I suppose I should work more on balancing those. ________________________________________ Tiphareth Sephirot |

My mother died about a year ago of natural causes (she had a fatal stroke while on holiday far from a medical facility). I still maintain contact with our clan and attend clan functions whenever I can. Some of them resent my capsuleer status, some don't.
My father is a captain in the Republic Fleet Marines. He is currently part of a station security detail. I visit him whenever I have the time to do so. He can always be relied upon to stop me from getting too arrogant. He, and his effective clan within the Fleet, are also good company.
I have a half-brother who is also a capsuleer. I tend to see and socialise with him fairly regularly.

An interesting question. I spend the vast majority of my time planetside on Intaki with my wife and children. Perhaps it is for this reason that I do not feel the same disconnect from the non-capsuleer community that many pod pilots express.

Edited by: Stitcher on 14/04/2009 00:40:42 So much loss and abandonment. So many of you have just... chucked part of yourselves away. Why?
To the ones who lost their family to tragedy or the actions of another, you have my sympathies and condolences, however old and faded those wounds may be. To the ones like me whose families are still intact and important: Please, hold onto that for as long as you can. We need as many pilots as possible who haven't forgotten their roots.
The rest of you really need to get anchored again. Somehow. I'm convinced that half the reason capsuleers have the reputation we do boils down to the way so many of us sever all ties with their previous lives, almost as if it's a matter of course. I can't imagine ever being that.... cold. - Verin "Stitcher" Hakatain. |

I, evil Sansha-drone that I am, keep in touch with my family often, though my brother is irritating and my mother is always after me to find a girl.
It is one of the many things that keeps me centered - to sit down for a meal, to talk, to visit, to simply be there.
My pod may be my home, but no one has ever convinced me that I cannot have more than one home.
