So I was browsing Youtube the other day and I came across The Scorpions for the first time.
I thought ...'Bugger me! Why have I never heard these guys until now?!'
The music blew me away, but when I realised they've been around for over 40 years I felt culturally bankrupt, but also grateful for technology to connect with these giants.
Anyway, my favs so far:

Agreed. I had a similar revelation at the end of the milennium. Found out all kinds of new entertainment, that I had no idea even existed. It hit me, that everything available in local stores/TV/radio/ads is heavily filtered from what actually is available out there. I still go on searches to find something new from time to time and so far I've never been dissappointed.
I hope this is just one of many similar finds still to come

Well I was born in 1982.
In Africa.
I've since migrated, but I guess they weren't part of the music scene where I grew up.
I'm sure I sound awfully naive, but I'm just struck how technology has allowed and will continue to allow generations to rediscover our collective past.
The memescape seems larger, more varied and easier to access. So too, smaller memes aren't arbitrarily crushed by the larger and older memes can co-exist with the newer.
These dynamics have existed in the past, but technology seems to be a catalyst for it all by dramatically accelerating the process and making it more visible.
The side-effect of this is a kind of narcissistic flat-land with little depth -depth that used to be provided by the church but is now void. But in time, I think this too will change.

I dunno, I miss that you no longer have to part of the culture to experience it. Human contact is entirely optional. Too many people sit online listening to music and not enough go to shows and FEEL the music.
That said, yes it's easier to find a greater variety of music when you don't have to rely on the music scene to inform you. -- Distortion| Distortion 2 Preview |

The church has usually been a source of evil in past history. Controlling people, telling them what is OK to say and what not and so on. They have killed people in the name of their religion. They have put their opinion out there as "fact - God exists and if you dont believe, you are a sinner". They can go screw themselfs.
I dont have much positive things to say about it at all. But human spirituality Im all for. People who feel their lives have a meaning are usually more positive to life and more fun to be around.

Listen to that one sometime while flying in a little Cessna over some scenic mountain views and that memory sticks with you forever.

Thanks for your input Jim. I'm no fan of the church either, but its loss in our post-modern (or post-post-modern) world seems to have created a void in our need to reach out to something greater than ourselves.
New Age, eco-spiritual & other metaphysical movements were spawned but they all carry a deep narcissistic twinge to them. Boomeritis explains it quite well and The Secret is a prime example of this kind of 'magical thinking' that wraps itself in the aura of older & deeper traditions particularly from the East with the promise of the holy trinity: wealth, health & enlightenment.
I think we will grow out of it eventually, but it's going to take a lot of sweat to get there and better language to outline the arguments in a clear and forceful manner.
For the time being I'd be happy if someone informed Oprah the last thing we need are more overdeveloped egos.

I've been impressed with how many top American Idol contestants seem to have gotten their start as singers in church. What other American institution gives such young people such a chance to develop their singing talent?

Well, I guess producing singers is better than producing people who believe everything they read in the bible.
