During last Fanfest some Devs promised to introduce a feature that they call an arena, a pvp combat between 2 or 4 people, that other can watch and bet on.
Source: Linkage -> question from Tyrax Orc at 24:30, arena mentioned 24:50+
I've been watching the devblogs and dev forum posts for this feature, but didn't see it mentioned ever after. Does anyone know what's the current status of it, is it still in development, or was it cancelled because the audience howled when they heard the words "simulated combat" ?

There was a thingy, that got shelved, because there was no way to make virtual ship combat work in EVE.

They tried to implement it for Apo, only to find Tranquility to reject the code.
Make of it what you want....

the recipient of the duel has the ability to reject and if accepted, is warned one more time and then bam, its on. concord is out of the picture.
the whole betting side of things can be handled by entrepreneurial types who come up with whatever various mechanisms they like
this doesn't have to be complicated

should be an allaince tool. You can some corpmates fight another corp to virutal combat in ships that are for the arena only. And you can pick different ships, that are all pre-fit.
So you get a total of 50 points.
Tackler frigate:5 points ECM cruiser: 12 points
and so on.
Then you enter a digital arena with vector graphics using ships that are only for arena combat, and go at it to the death with your allaince mates.
Winning ups you in the rankings.
This would be fun for when you just can't find targets, or the war is dwindling down.
Then add a option with the upcoming eve facebook thing... I mean COSMOS, so that fights can be seen in advance and bet on by other allaince mates.
Thus it becomes a fun way to play when action is slow within your own ranks.
none of this duel bull****.

Maybe they postponed it a bit after all the boos and hisses from the audience… Also, from what I recall, it sounded more like they wanted to tie it to the gaming mechanics in ambulation so if it ever happens, it will probably be (long) after that. ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in =v=… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

there was a more recent thread about that *ponders what to eve-search for*
there was lots of stuff in the apochribba patch having to do with arenas; models for structures etc and people started asking question then, too. all i remember is the answers to be pretty disturbing -.- - putting the gist back into logistics |

Arenas are ingame already... Just go somewhere empty, shoot each other and try to not pop the hull.
If CCP really wants it, they could add a testing mode to weapons, so that in this testing mode the guns are not very likely to keep shooting until the hull explodes.
Of course, this would be on real space, with real ships, and you never know if the other guy is really testing =P

Arena fine and good, but please dont overdo it. I hate losing ships but I'd hate to make PvP "riskless".
So whatever, option for a concordless fight in high sec [without being in corp and without flipping each others can] ofc. but dont come down to "virtual fights", it sounded like that back then.
BTW, I'd be for an Ambulation "MIND CLASH" Implementation though

tbh, i wouldn't mind something like what Wing Commander 1 had: - if you're docked in station, you can take a ship you own into a simulator. different gui (no local chat, fake starfield) but otherwise normal game engine, in a fake system which doesn't allow warping and has no celestials. your friends can then join you and either fight you, or join up as a team against neverending hordes of more powerful and powerful enemies, until you die. and get a high score
just for ****s and giggles really. i think it'd be cool.
not duel, no challenge or anything like that, just basically a Singularity mode on tranq. --

Wow, someone didn't read the topic.
That said, I don't necessarily agree with the idea, and think there's a lot better things CCP's time and money could be invested in.

Eve online rejected the code becuase it didnt know how to handel a 'virtual' loss of ship thus a death anywhere in eve still counts as death and in order to change that would require an entire rewrite of the code or a work around thats dubiously prone for inserting many more bugs and exploits.

The most arena-like thing I can see working in Eve is an option to exchange short term kill rights, so a pair of players or two small gangs could shoot at each other in high sec without Concord intervening. Ideally without letting their respective corpmates interfere. You can fake it as is by being in the same corp or engaging in reciprocal can theft, but an explicit method could be useful.
I don't see any reason force combat to stop at hull damage or to make any losses virtual; don't play the game in something you aren't willing to lose.

This... there already is a pvp arena where your losses mean nothing, it's called Singularity. We don't need wow stuff on Tranquility, kthx.

Edited by: Sleepkevert on 14/04/2009 09:38:03 I started a thread about it in game development about it when I spotted it on sisi. Got moved to feature and idea discussion when it dissapeard from sisi though. Has little extra info about it but it contains the post of CCP saying "the code was rejecting it" etc.
Edit: forgot to link the thread _
