I really like the ideas generated by some pretty intelligent people all coalescing into a very cool game. I play when I feel like missioning, mining, deadspace complexing, scanning, talking with corp mates or just to look at the graphics. One thing I never have logged in specifically to do is give people grief. I am not talking about pvp, thats a part of the game and an integral part at that but I am refering more to the art of yelling at a mirror because its too reflective or in eve online terms, abusing someone in game for not doing the same things as themselves for entirely different reasons due to fact they have different interests/lifestyles etc.
Please forgive me for what I type next lol.
For too many years I have joyfully thrown drunk idiots out of pubs, defended anyone/everyone from bullies in a very physical sort of way that only they seem to understand. But why the @#$% would I want to spend my time at home relaxing and give people grief in an online game??? Somehow it seems idiotic dealing with very real physical violence day in and day out then want to do it in any unreal sort of way to relax. |

That's a valid question.
I shoot at player ships and enjoy it, but only if they shoot back. Sometimes in w-space you shoot defenseless noobs in T1 scanning frigs, but that's just something that has to be done, and getting tears convoed afterwards doesn't really feel nice.
Mental reward from killing a guy who tries to kill me just as eagerly is just much larger than what I'd get from killing someone who wants to mine. As a rational being, I aim to maximize the reward I get from time spent playing.
I don't really understand suicide ganking miners and missioners in hisec, unless they are bots. But then on the other hand, people are just different, and ganking certainly doesn't touch my EVE life in any way.

You really answered your own question, at the bold underlined. People are not the same. Different things floats different boats. What you find mundane, and not fun, Others will enjoy them.

Logging in was your first mistake.
Also its common for MMOs and the internet in general. You can do **** that you generally wouldn't/can't do IRL. For example some where probably picked on in school as a kid, and now they can get their revenge by being a **** to others in a internet spaceship game. |

I think of it like this.
2 boxers enter a ring. One boxer turns around, sits in a corner and starts knitting. The other boxer pounds the first guy into oblivion.
It's not like EVE is FTP and we're picking on 2 day old noobs who just started playing. Everyone knows what they are in for and if you don't know what kind of game you signed up for then you only have yourself to blame. |

I just threw up in your moms mouth, but to answer the question
This game is pretty similar to dungeons and dragons in that it allows people to be something they are not.
If you have a demanding life then you play a game like this to relax.
But
If you have very little going on in your life then you can devote endless hours to mattering in this medium when you dont really matter in real life.
To answer the OP every professional tough guy ive ever met in real life is normally quite gentle as they have nothing to prove to anyone. You may fall into that category as a bouncer. Everyone ive ever met in this game in vent etc who is solely a griefer is either a no mark or works in IT (self diagnosed Aspie)
Its horses for course although i am labeling people into broad categories myself :) I dont normally troll, but when i do i do it on General Discussion. |

It seems you are bringing your work home with you. You've found a place where there are drinks before and after work. Some very, some not so much, some throwing up in their mouth..Unfortunately, Eve s a good place to attract white knights but our tools for Solo work are two limited. For most if us, Eve is an extension of ourselves.

What you do in RL is irrelevant, insecure nerds who were bullied in school have their chance in EVE to walk over to the school yard/eve sand pits, be tough and kick the sand castles over of people who they will never meet in real life. It's easy to be tough behind a computer

It's easy to be tough behind a computer It does not do anyone harm to blow up space ships. EVE is a good place to make experiences. "White Knights" in RL are only out to cause others real, physical harm and use the weak as an excuse for doing it. It is another form of bullying and only more hidden.
I have seen a guy, who played American Football, do the "White Knight" once. Someone complained about something irrelevant, acted like a jerk, so he walk over to him, picked him up and slammed him onto the pavement. He could have easily broken the guy's back. Nobody said anything about it, which was rather scary, because I thought it was a very brutal assault.
What is annoying is that people do not stand up to these "White Knights", but rather see it as heroism. It is hard to stand up to someone who you know wants to do the right thing, but resorts to violence... One wrong does not right another wrong.
Some of the "White Knights" then learn the truth about their behaviour, if at all, in a hard way. The guy who they beaten up for being drunk sometimes takes his car and runs them over with it. Or worse, they get an automatic gun and start shooting everyone around them... Violence creates violence.
Why we do it is because it is in our nature to be violent and stupid and we want to live it out rather than to suppress it. In EVE does nobody get actually hurt by it and one can live it out to the fullest extend.

Resorting to violence is immoral Two wrongs don't make a right Suppression of these "urges" is the right thing to do, always.
Some people will never respond to anything other than physical interaction.
That's not opinion, it's been psychologically demonstrated. Stimulus response requires you to be stimulated. If you're not stimulated by someone's words or 'example' ...yup.

A sandbox, not a battleground. His interpretation and illustration is flawed. If he had used a better logical illustration and interpretation, I'd have let it go. Deal with it. |
