You guys are kidding right?
You release Apocrypha with some good content, mediocre graphics, and a completely broken sound engine. The release stalls all the momentum that had been building since you released Quantum Rise. Player counts actually drop. A dev blog comes out patting yourselves on the back for all your good work.

hey what happen to the particle effects shown at fanfest?
If you did all this work on these sm2 effects, does that means the really cool effects you showed us won't make it to eve for 3/4 years?
I loved the idea of nos looking different based on speed and angular velocity and range, that was some cool stuff. Then to see you guys work on something like this insrtead of palnets and backgrounds which is what we see more than anything in eve...
no offence but it makes eve look really old... I was playing eve and someone asked what was new, I said the effects, and they didn't even notice they were any better.
Not to say they look bad, like he noticed the wormhole graphics, and the wrap were new, same with the jump effects. But things like lazer, while we think they look better, a normal eve players won't notice.
Speaking of which change the blaster graphics so anyone can notice they even exist.
SO yeah while the new effects are great and all, newer players don't really notice they are new looking, things like engines, fire, weapon fire, and missles look all 3-4 years old, instead of 8 years old.
Good upgrade but I'll be waiting until all effects have the WOAH factor that webs/jumpign/wormholes have.
Maybe you should drop SM2 this Christmas...

Hey, I know normally you outsource your art assets to that company in... France?
But I was wondering, seeing that the new asteroids were done by 5-6 guys in house.
And that the orca was done in house.
And I'm pretty sure... the effects were done in-house... I hope...
Were tech 3 ships done in hosue or not this tiem around?

wait but the players have been whining that all the good sites are getting cleared out...
So if the players are currently so good at running wormholes that they can make players whine about them being to easy and not respawning... then how can this dev blog say that the reason for poor prices is we can't run them?

how? ... "with difficulty".
I've never actually set my foot in a Wormhole system, so I might be way off... easy w-space has less T3-resources than the harder difficulties, and is farmed to depletion. the harder difficulties aren't run as much, as the risk isn't equal to the reward? risk being that you'll be found by players while taking care of the sleepers (which takes a long time, I'm gathering).
if all three difficulties were farmed equally... prices may have stabilized at what CCP was hoping for. but... it isn't.
... do I have that correctly?

It's simple really.
As intended, W-space is too hard for casual farming. It's not meant to be done solo, logistics are difficult, the new AI is tougher, there's PvP risk... We're constantly told by devs that players are supposed to lose ships and clones.
So as expected, the bulk of casual players remained in hisec, running missions. It's boring, but safe and reliable.
On the other hand, by design, W-space isn't rewarding enough for organized exploitation: low spawn rate, POS mechanics intentionally hard, hours upon hours of gas harvesting, etc.
Too hard for casuals, not worth it for dedicated players: broken as intended.

I can't say much about organized exploitation, but my friends and me have been rather well-served by wormholes. I've explored them by myself, or with one other guy, and come out quite nicely. I think 500m for an evening's exploration proves quite nice, don't you? Of course, that seems to be the exception. Exploration is, after all, hit and miss.

Edited by: Uzume Ame on 24/04/2009 09:49:04 The T3 failure was predicted by some of us on GD/Science & Industry, yet CCP FAILS again to understand their own game economy and playerbase sociology/psychology. So much failure...
Exactlly what I though would happen is happening. And some of the obvious fixes will happen soon (if haven't yet): increase the bottleneck resources by adding additional plex spawn (couple gases, relics, etc.) and probably making these sites easier for the average joe.
Anyway interesting devblog, get back cyno effect ffs.

There are some bottlenecks... however making the sites easier would ruin the fun of sleeper sites.

I agree, and I don't think it should be done. Hopefully increasing the ratio of certain sites will be enough.

PLZ FOR THE LOVE OF GOD MORE EASYER RADAR SITES THAT GIVE MORE LOOT
Radar sites are the only bottleneck, datacores to be more specific. 3x radar sites out of about 30 wormholes with and 9 datacores only to reverse engineer with no results.
Take the value out of blueprints and put it into the ploymers etc.

FYI, the price of t3 ships is somewhat based on players. If you find a relic, or gas, or salvage, the value is based on what people are willing pay. Either people are paying high prices, or they arent and people havent dropped their price to meet demand yet. It will simply take time.
Of course the price can be dependent on real costs, such as how time could be better spent, ships losses, etc.
BUt really, if i head into a wormhole, find a mag, kill everything and get some relics, theres no real value cept what Im willing to accept from a buyer.

Quote: By this time in our minds, we were certain that now close to 3 weeks after release the market would be flooded with Tech3 ships and people would be bored with the 3 variations already in and would be anxiously awaiting the 4th. It seems the required ventures into Wormhole space, with the accompanying Sleeper encounters as well as the manufacturing involved, has proven to be quite the challenge even for the most seasoned of players.
Is the above meant as a joke? If not then it just comes off as condescending and insulting.
W-space isn't a 'challange' for seasoned players. It's just simply not worth the effort or risk when players can make nearly the same ISK/hour for zero risk.
The fact that numerous people reviewed the devblog before it was posted and gave it the OK of final approval gives me pause. This is what CCP actually thinks? CCP thinks that the lack of proliferation of T3 is a failure/inability on the part of the players? What a joke.
It's not the players' fault there are so few T3 ships. It's squarely CCP's. The respawn rates of plexes etc. in high level systems are too low to keep a single small group of 5-6 players occupied 24 hours a day. This *includes* the most mundane stuff like gas cloud mining.
There is no 'added reward' for those of us who are 'brave enough' to set up residence in a w-space system. We went there, we tried it, we ran the numbers and then we promptly curtailed our efforts once we realised that the ISK/hour was below empire L4 missions.
The 'new' and the 'sense of adventure' wore off in about 4 hours. Fighting sleepers became old hat in about the same timeframe. Ok, so they switch targets, no biggie. Instead of specialised ships to do a specific job of EW or DPS or remote repping, we now distribute those functions equally between all ships and build in redundancy so that no single ship does any one thing.
T3 perform at the level of a well fit Tier2 BC. That's fine and dandy, but why not just buy a Tier2 BC instead? They have a few unique features, but truth be told, even with 4000+ combinations of subsystems only 1% or so of those are actually worthwhile. The number of worthwhile combinations might even be closer to something around 0.5%.
T3 needs to be more prolific and w-space needs to be more populated. Right now it's neither. There are far too many restrictions on ship size for the lower level w-space systems. BS should be allowed in every type of wormhole, and capital ships restricted to L5 and L6 wormholes.
Right now the lower level w-space systems are totally mined out, and the higher tier systems don't have enough resources in them to support a small team of players trying to make a living in them.
The whole thing needs a complete rework if it's going to succeed. Right now it's not.

All of those effects went from being cool to highly annoying. Especially the Disruption Bubble and Sensor Booster, they are WAY over the top and need to be FAR more discreet.

I'd like to start by clarifying, this was intended as an Art blog specifically about the Tech3 art creation and the updated effects system. In hindsight this is not made clear enough and we've already updated the title to clarify. I regrettably cannot answer any of the game design related issues stated in the comments here either, although I will makes sure that my colleagues are notified. The most commented on and harshly criticized paragraph has been:
"By this time in our minds, we were certain that now over 6 weeks after release the market would be flooded with Tech3 ships and players would be bored with the 3 variations already in and embracing the arrival of the 4th. But it seems the required ventures into Wormhole space, with the accompanying Sleeper encounters as well as the manufacturing process involved, is proving to be quite the challenge, even for the most seasoned players."
Again, this was from an Art department perspective. It describes a bit the mentality when in full production and development. You think and hope what you are doing will be well received and worry that delivering something a bit later than originally planned will cause a bigger stir than it actually does. It would be quite arrogant to ramble on in a Dev blog about how challenging we made something and imply that our players aren't up for the task. I'm hoping this misunderstanding is simply related to the previously stated ambiguity about this being an Art blog.
As for the effects, many of the ones that have been commented on here are already on our list for polishing. That was also one of the reasons for making them a part of the blog, to state that this is and will be an ongoing project. The effects listed there were by no means the mentioned "handful" in the blog. We could have used more time to work on them, especially since every effect had to be touched. Changing the effects system was also a part of a bigger move to optimize the graphics engine, and this required every effect to be done almost from scratch using this new system, but also means they're running with less overhead instead.
And as for any comments about patting ourselves on the back. I stand firm by the statement that those involved in the art asset creation for Apocrypha as a whole all went above and beyond the call of duty and did a pretty amazing job considering the amount of work involved.
Respectfully, CCP jBot

Thanks for the blog and the explanation.
One of the most disappointing aspects of the effects overhaul is the deletion of some of the old effects without any replacement. One of these is the engine trails effect. Can we expect this one to come back? When?
Will the engine, and propulsion effects (AB, MWD, OD, etc.) overall be getting some kind of an update?
What happened to the 'particle' effects on the stargates seen on SISI right before the QR went live?
When do you think we'll finally get the newest iteration of the warp effect on TQ last seen on SISI right before Apoc 1.1?
And last, but definitely not least - what's the schedule for the planets and space graphical update?
Thanks for any light you can shed on any of the above! ...

Maybe this Quote: "By this time in our minds, we were certain that now over 6 weeks after release the market would be flooded with Tech3 ships and players would be bored with the 3 variations already in and embracing the arrival of the 4th. Should have been more along the lines of
"We were worried that by the time we delivered the 4th subsystem the player base would already be bored with the first three."
Quite frankly I'm impressed that the art team did everything from scratch in the short time that they had. I was sure that you guys had developed all the art assets previous to announcing the delivery date etc. When I found out (or so I've heard) that there wasn't any art done (not the majority of it anyway) before October or so I thought that you guys were either crazy or complete masochists or both. I hope you're getting paid well.
