Jita is the name of a system and is the most popular trade hub (where lots of buyers and sellers trade goods) although there are another few others, Dodixie and Rens for example.
4-4 refers to planet 4 moon 4 and that's where the "main" station is located. Throughout Eve you'll find that people refer to systems/stations/moons etc in that way as a form of shorthand.
If there was a station at Planet 8 Moon 7 in Jita, they'd refer to it as "the station at Jita 8-7" for example.
I can't recall how far it is away from your system but open People & Places, hit the system tab and search for Jita. Right click and set destination. Then hit f10 to open the map (you might need to toggle map to see the galactic map instead of the system one) and you'll see how many jumps away it is. Check your Autopilot settings to go for the safest route. The dots on the left indicate the sec status of the systems you'll travel through.

The Jita Station at Planet 4 moon 4 is where roughly 50% of the trade in th whole of Eve takes place. Anything that can be placed for sale in Eve can be found there. Some things are cheap, because there is a lot of competition, but some things are expensive, because they know you will go there for it and it is rare.
The reasons why it is that particular station are many and historical, and most of them are no longer relevant anymore, but has stayed the major hub through inertia:
Most players are Caldari, and it is at the heart of the Caldari Empire, one jump from New Caldari itself It is roughly at the centre of the universe for players from other Empires It is in the same region as the Caldari Cosmos missions It is a station for Caldari Navy, where many people have good standings It is 6 jumps from the best Caldari Agent and 2 (I think) jumps from the best Caldari Navy agent It used to be the site of a 10/10 complex which was busy and gave lots of good loot drops

Actually, around 8% of it (the market part only) according to some older quarterly report. And the vast majority is in a single location, the Jita IV-4 Caldari Navy station. But 50% is probably a fair assessment for the public contracts market Still, considering the next largest hub only gets around 3% of the market share, Jita's 8% is something fierce.

Actually, Oursalert (or however its spelled) IS a trade hub, one of the major gallentean ones in fact. There are 2 other 'major' hubs for Amarr and Minmatar space as well (Amarr and Rens respectively), however these 3 hubs are nowhere near the scale of Jita, which is the major trade hub for the whole game. <-------------------------------------------------> "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." -Albert Einstein |

It's the 28% of made up statistics that are correct that scares me.

Jita used to be a primary mission-running hub and had asteroid belts for mining. As time went on, the agents and belts were removed to help reduce lag in the system. It now exists pretty much solely as a market hub.

In beta of the game jita was the spot. It was the trading hub way back then and it cracks me up that it has stayed the hub. the market used to work differently and was easy to manipulate. several corps used the area to acquire minerals. It also used to be a decent halfway spot or for some reason people did not mind going there.
I used to help raise funds for corporations that were looking to move out in deep space.
i love me some jita!

Was it Jita before it was Yulai? Because it was Yulai for a long time. However I strongly dislike Yulai because it's unpronounceable.

We started with:
Yulai (Centre-point between the 4 factions and under the sovereignity of CONCORD)
Rens (Minmatar) Niyabainen (Caldari) Oursulaert (Gallente)
No idea what the Amarr used as their local trade-hub... Kor-Azor perhaps.
Then the highway was redone and Yulai vanished as centre.
And later the complex to Jita was added and Niyabainen shifted to Jita... and it still remains there.
And since most players have rolled an Achura character somewhere along the way it is still the largest trade-hub. -----------------------------------------------

Jita was before Yulai. In beta quite a few people targeted jita to setup headquarters for recruiting. Most were going caldari. Yulai became more popular for awhile.
How it became the trading hub was from people like me that would setup buy orders in all the stations and amass tons of ore and then sell to player corps. There was a huge race back then just to get mins to build new ships and save for player stations. It was extremely lucrative in the early goings because the market was not 'stable'. It was very easy to make it seem like you were offering the highest price. The beta people took a few liberties of anticipating rookie mistakes of the market. Buyer and more importantly back then Seller beware!

The system Amarr would (or is) be the major trade-hub for the Amarr race. =)

Now lets name the wannabe hubs:
Oursulaert is the Jita wannabe, but it will never be.
Tash-Murkon is the Amarr-wannabe central hub
