I just spent a long time downloading the eve client on slow connection just to be told that my graphics card needs "shaders 2.0 or higher" or somesuch.
I've been told there is a classic client for older computers that can't handle the new graphics engine, but I can't find a place to download it anywhere

Minimum requirements for eve are shader 2.0 or above. There is no classic client anymore.

Yeah. We know it sucks. But either upgrade your graphics card, or play something else than EVE. Your signature exceeds the maximum allowed dimensions of 400x120 pixels and filesize of 24000 bytes -Sahwoolo Etoophie |

True this. EVE is now a 2009 game. You can play it on an older machine, though. But a 2002 machine won't play it. Just like it won't play any other up to date game.

This is the New Player forum. Let's try to be civil, especially to all those new player trying to be snide and hip. Protip: You're not.
To the OP: yes, you're going to have to upgrade your video card if you want to keep playing Eve. You should be able to do so for very little money if you browse newegg.

Protip: Not everyone is in the US and has a clue what newegg is, and even if they do it will be US-only.

Sadly they destroyed the classic client.
Im running game at 1024x768 with a FX5200. It's a very crappy card from 2005, but its shader model 2.0. For me the game looks worse than before while runs slower, so thanks CCP.
When mining or fighting I open the starmap it makes the game way smoother and playable but it sucks cause I miss the action
I suggest you to buy a low end graphics card unless you can afford a high end computer (if this happens, go for it and enjoy). For a low graphic I suggest ati HD3650 or HD4670 both of them are great for a low price.

They have a UK branch too. And is it really too hard to use a search engine to find them?

No, they don't.

Show me a UK branch, please. And I did look, just in case.

Maybe I was thinking of Tiger or a different well-known vendor.

No Tiger either. If you are looking for parts in the UK I suggest http://pricerunner.co.uk, However many people aren't in the UK either. What I object to is the assumption that either everyone is in the US or all US online stores are international. Neither is true.
The sooner the US wakes up to the fact they are not the world the happier the whole world will be.

Well our awakening may be slow but we seem to be getting all the help we can use in doing it ....

The thing is, most people - wherever they live - haven't got a clue what's available in other countries and what isn't - or - which vendors are international and which aren't - or - where anyone posting in this forum happens to live.
If you do live in a country where some specific vendor you've tried to use can't be - THEN you know. Otherwise you've no idea.
Now ... one problem people upgrading their video cards may have (like me) is that you may need to upgrade your OS as well. So ask which OS it will use before you buy it. I would expect that most video cards being sold today would still support XP ... but it's probably not a bad idea to make sure ...
My ATI 9800 has developed a GPU glitch and will not play the new version of the game even though it should. The glitch is not exclusive to EVE. So - I recently bought a couple of Sapphire HD 3850 AGP 8 cards (which I got from Tiger Direct/CompUSA). HIS produced a version of that card as well but they were listed as unavailable ... so I got the Sapphire. It's got a 450 W. ps requirment ... though it should work with XP but since I've got Win2k installed (still) ... I had to get some copies of XP with it.
Sorry I can't give any kind of report as to how well the card works - I haven't put it in yet ... other issues on my plate.
One thing about doing that video upgrade ... if you're going to do it ... better to do it sooner than later ... as with that HIS version of the 3850 ... you may find things becoming unavailable ...
Oh ... and while you're at it ... if you don't have your systsm's RAM topped off ... that might not be a bad idea too. Nothin' helps a system wheeze on down the road a bit longer than more RAM (which may not be available forever either ...).
