How many years in the future is Eve? When they went and had to re-invent everything did they forget how to make a lock?
When I eject from my ship I should be able to lock it. Sure make codebreakers / analyzers have the ability to unlock them (I like scanning down a free ship as much as the next guy) but atleast give us the option.... |

your in a freakin pod when you eject from your ship simple answer to why this is
a Pod is there just to keep your clone alive with basic systems like popultion warp drive and life support no added systems are on the pod untill you get to actuall ship where you can explore the possiblity of locking people having weapons having cap and other systems gained bye beaing in a ship

While we are at it with our stupid requests. I want a towbar so I can tow my cargo.

Uhh.... I may be reading this wrong, but is everyone who responded to the OP reading it wrong?
The OP was (as far as I can see) suggesting that you can lock (as in with a key) your ship when you eject, not that you can get a target lock on another ship when in your pod.

The idea of locking up your ship while you're away has been mentioned before. Unfortunately, it's not very popular with a lot of the bloodthirsty sociopaths who play EVE.
- If you leave a ship docked, it's safe. - If you leave a ship inside a POS shield, it's reasonably safe unless you have ****ty corpmates. - If you leave a ship floating, but target it with another ship, it's safe until someone breaks your target lock. - If you leave a ship floating free and unattended, it's going to belong to someone else before too long.

what is wrong with people. i guess its just the pirate s****out there. i thought eve was about being as realistic as possible. so why no locks/alarms and other security measures. oh wait thats wrong cos it makes pirates have to risk something to try and make there easy money because they are to lame to go pvp and earn it.
if there are locks on all ships implemented then fair enougth. give the pirates sledgehammers to break open the lock . i dont mind that. its realistic.
my car has locks and alarms. but a determined thief with the skills can just walk up and take it so why not in eve. its not changing anything too much just making it harder and more skilled.
YES TO LOCKS
even if its a module. different versions provide different lvls of security. these increas time it takes for someone to unlock said ship. and then the pirat could have a reverse module that counteracts this effect ie decreases time it takes to unlock

If you eject from your ship, you are basically abandoning it to outer space. I see no reason why you should get to keep it at the same time, otherwise peolple could start using abandoned iterons as secure cargo cans and stuff. |

Modules have no effect until they are activated, which can't happen while you're out of the ship. That's a big chunk of EVE to reprogram just to be able to park a ship in space with a low level of security. ***************

I don't see what the big issue is: it's a lock on a ship. Is that too big of a leap of the imagination? When you leave your car in the street to go shopping, are you abandoning your vehicle? Doesn't it seem like a good idea to lock it? Why would this be different? Obviously it would be open to any and all attempts to break the lock, blow the ship up, do all manner of nefarious stuff with it.
Not every problem needs ammo to resolve.

I'm all for implementing locks.
After they are implemented, however, I will champion the cause of 'lockpick' modules which would work on ships, containers, POS's, and the like.
I've never stolen anything from someone in game, but for every measure of safety, I believe in an equal and opposite countermeasure.

its all about ballance. for every possitive change to the game there is a negative to ballance it out. its not a huge leap for this to happon and whilst this minor change provides a small benefit to people it opens up the opertunity for a counter change.

Love this!
I think when you eject, it should say lock your ship? if/when you hit YES! a Keypad jumps on screen and asks you to enter a 4-6 digit PIN... that way if you need someone else to access your ship (corp/alliance mate) you can tell them your PIN and they can jump in it for you.
Also I'd have that codebreakers would take ages to break one of these... having a single mod on your ship would take a good 30-45 mins sitting there letting it cycle (maybe make it that smaller less technolgical ships have less advanced locks but BS and T2 ships and T3 will have progressivly more complexed systems)
someone with 8 code breakers would still take 5-10 mins trying to hack into someone elses ship. This still gives time for someone to eject from there ship lock it, dock, and come back.

even if it was only locked for a short amount of time. "your ship is now locked. your padlock :) will degrade and fail in 25mins"
that way ships wont become how cans used to be in the old days of eve.
even if ship security systems was a skill. 5 mins per skill lvl (25 mins at lvl 5)

Oooh, I didn't know this. If this is true then how does it work exactly?
It's a High Sec Wardec mechanic.
The idea was... if I am shooting at you, and you eject. Then a neutral party climbs into your ship while I'm still firing on it. Now suddenly it belongs to someone else, and thus Concord pops me.
So instead, they fixed it so only the original owner can board a ship which has been targeted.
We've tested it thoroughly, to make sure it works.
Not even your corpmates can board your ship, so long as anyone has it targeted.
Easy trick has been to have several teammates target the same ship, to ensure that a single suicide ECM gang can't break your lock and steal the ship.
As for flat out locking up a ship, I can see both sides of the argument. It definitely makes sense, the simple ability to add a password or profile or something. Hell, we do it with computers in general, and with EVE in particular. My password lets me into my character and no one elses.
But at the same time, it depends on the definition of "Eject" CCP is using.
Jettison Cargo, and the Jet Can left behind, is just tossing trash into space. That's why you don't get Concorded immediately for taking it. If someone wishes to reclaim their trash, they have the opportunity, but otherwise it's just left floating.
Self Destruct is essentially "Scuttling" a ship, preventing the opposition from claiming any spoils. That's what makes Pirates so mad, that they "worked so hard" and get no rewards.
So it depends on whether Ejecting is seen as merely getting out of the car to go into the grocery store, or whether it's abandoning ship and rowing your life raft home. But I think the former applies more to docking and leaving the ship, while the latter applies in deep space. |

Think of the Sci-Fi television series. On Stargate Atlantis, they could keep out intruders from a ship, and the city of Atlantis, as long as their shield was functional. But when the shield was down, the enemy could beam themselves into the area because nothing was stopping them any longer.

but we dont have teleporters, we have pods and if the pod bay is locked how you getting in. to lock your ship is totally plausable and realistic. this should happon but within reason and ballance.

Of course we should be able to lock our ships, the same way we set passwords on secure cargo containers. Codebreaker modules should work on them the same way too. But when a hacking attempt fails, the hacker should get aggro'd. But Concord should fine people by the hour for every thing they leave floating in space and we should automatically loose ownership of our stuff after about a couple of days, which means Concord deletes all our passwords.
