Yea, Im not gona explain neither giving the reasons here, but whoever this matters, they know that theres ABOLUTELY NO NEED for the downtime.
Downtime is a really old thing eve use to do, that theres no reason at all to keep doing it, I mean blah blah stop macroers blah blah etc.. but please.. its not 1 hour that will make the difference..
The downtime is completely obsolete nowadays for the ccp servers. Its old, its here to annoy and nothing else.
To those who dont understand, trust me, do you think a company as ccp needs to restart all the servers at the same time for one hour everyday? LOL ..
cmon stop being pathetic and come to reality about whos ccp nowadays..
STOP THE BS ABOUT DOWNTIME.
We would all so much appreciate it :)

First:
Either you're monumentally ignorant of how the server works, in which case you should probably not comment again, or you're a troll, in which case you're monumentally ignorant, and you probably shouldn't comment again.
Second:
Downtime is nothing to do with macroers.
Downtime is needed in order to safely compile the statistics which are required, to clean up old data which is no longer needed, to perform any required backups of data, and a host of other reasons which are specific to EVE itself.

Yeah there's no reason whatsoever for all the downtime, they just do it to annoy you.
if you disagree with me then you should probably post a response and stop reading my signature. |

Edited by: Robert Caldera on 27/04/2009 12:13:10 There is no need for a downtime, it's all just matter of cost to implement a downtime-free system, so I sign the request -> STOP THE DOWNTIMES!
There are companies which work with a multiple data volume CCP does while they do not require a downtime for maintenance tasks, think about cellular net provider or banks which rely on highly available systems.

They said when they bought this new RamSan 500 there would be reduced downtimes. I have yet to see the results of the bragging CCP did in the blogs.

From a neutral point of view, I can guess many reasons for CCP to have a 1 hour downtime.
1) To clean up the server of usless data (as said above)
2) To refresh the server, and stats (also said above)
3) To stop macroers and other bots from being active 24/7.

Why do you claim to be an expert on how the CCP servers operate? Other MMOs dont have DTs because they are all much smaller and simpler that the Eve super server I think WOW servers have a max of 2000 players (I may be wrong) But the eve server has to be able to accomodate above 100'000 (although it has never reached this number)
Not only does it have many more players sending and reciving data, but it also has so many more graphics (Eve's graphics are superior to other MMOs like WOW and games like that. This means even more memory needed per player)
When you put these facts together, you can see how much more powerful and complicated the Eve server is. This probably is why CCP needs the dt- an online reboot (Or whatever they do) might prove disastrous.
And anyway, isn't 23 hours a day enough for ya?

The rest of what you said was true, but this isn't. Graphics are all rendered client side.
In fact, the EVE database and server nodes don't need to know anything about the graphical side of things (except ID#s of resources) as the graphics are irrelevant with respect to the modelled game state, so none of that requires memory on the server side.
Unless they've implemented it very badly, that is.

In addition to items already mentioned above the downtime allows reseeding of objects such as Asteroids.
