Having noticed a friendly contract scammer posting constantly in local, I decided to see how much he actually makes from spamming local every 5 minutes, 10 hours a day. I glanced at his history, and was quite stunned. To date, he has completed (all scams):
8 covert ops cloaking device ii contracts - EACH at 900m per 4 siege missile launcher ii x 3 contracts - 3 at 400m, 1 at 500m 12 ocular filter basic contracts - each at 300m per 1 dark blood energized thermic hardener - 1 bil
for a total of 13.5 bil, all since 04.11.09
so if anyone was still wondering why they do it, there ya go :)

Why anybody would buy something common on contract that is available saftely on the market is beyond me, but I always figured that if they're doing it, it must work, and it must work very well, and of course this confirms it.

So in ten days 13.5 B ISK... I barely make that ISK in 6 months by trading...

I just wonder is the actual spamming done by macro software?
I bet its done by macro software, look at the sheer speed some characters manage to advertise loads of contracts in jita local.
No way someone does this constantly for several hours (sometimes 23/7) and does it manually...
Pretty much sucks for the honest traders that cant use these channels for their advertising, but I guess nobody cares about them anyway.

I was in Amarr last week and there was a guy posting "This is a scam contract" and then a contract for a MAR (or something ****ty) for like 2B.. 6 hours and just before I logged he sold it..
People are stupid.. I recommend taking their ISK before I do.

Are you petitioning it? Cos if you aren't petitioning every single time you see a spammer or macro hauler you have no grounds to have a go at CCP for not killing off every spammer or macro hauler..

I've not had any luck with contract scams and I'm not too sure if I should try it to be honest. I don't really want to just sit in local and macro and the contract fees put me off it to. It doesn't sound as fun as my method.

This. I was in Dodixie learning how to Ninja Salvage, and there was a guy who generally appeared to be hated by all. I ask him in Local (for all to see), "Kind Sir. Do you make a lot of isk doing this?" He responded, "Dude. People are f****** stupid."
Would you believe me if I told you that not 5 minutes after calling everyone stupid he sold an EANM for 500 mil. Wow. That dude rocks

Its mainly interface issues in a game with no decent documentation. There are vested interests who make their personal isk from scamming who are very keen to de prioritize any fix. They have less influence in the game now, but they haven't all gone away. For years EVE was controlled by those older players - CCP are gradually targeting a more mainstream market and one by one their built in advantages are being eroded. Maybe one day they will devote some serious User Interface design effort to this area.

Its mainly interface and language issues in a game with no decent documentation and where the developers take pride in new players becoming the victims of their experienced friends. There are also vested interests who make their personal isk (and its leakage to real life money) from scamming who are very keen to de prioritize any fixes. They have less influence in the game now, but they haven't all gone away. For years EVE was controlled by those older players - CCP are gradually targeting a more mainstream market and one by one their built in advantages are being eroded. Maybe one day they will devote some serious User Interface design effort to this area, but that will come over the dead bodies .. or more accurately .. cancelled accounts .. of the old guard.
I wouldn't be so quick to blame the interface.. 1,999,999 looks nothing like 1,999 no matter what the interface you use. The fact that it doesn't put the handy (1.9M ISK) after it may be a small sticking point, but if you cant see 3 extra nines your unlikely to notice the lack of the shorter form..
Hell, people still fall for freeform contracts and they look nothing like normal contracts AND you have to click through a billion warning messages.. People who fall for them don't read the warning messages anyway, so its unlikely they will read any documentation.

I hate these scams.
...mainly because I'm too lazy to do it myself.
Whilst I have some sympathy for those that get duped by this, I can't help but wonder how it's possible that so many stupid people have billions+ of ISK? That's either a reflection on how easy it is to make ISK in the game, or how many stupid people there are in the World, or both - I guess? |

Quote: 1,999,999 looks nothing like 1,999 no matter what the interface you use
However 1,999,999 looks ALOT like 1,999.99, and that is just 2M, the normal one is 1,999,999,999 instead of 1,999,999.99. These are way harder to spot than the normal ones who just sell t1 invuln fields as caldari navy ones.

Last time I checked the interface displays the price as it actually is. If someone is charging 599,999,999.99 isk it shows it as that, not as 599,999.99. There isn't a problem with the interface, there's a problem with people not paying attention when they're doing stuff and then trying to pass the blame to CCP

I tried scamming today, but I couldn't get it to work for this one reason...
And this one reason is most likely why other people's scams work so well.
I made a contract for a EANM II for 900,000,000 (900 million) while it was 913k on the market. When I view the contract, and some others - if you look at the price cost, it shows a summary to the right. For instance, if you look at my contract, it'll say at the price cost: "900,000,000 (900 million)"
But on the other hand, several of the scamming contracts are like "999,999,999" There isn't a "(999 million)" price summary next to it. I'm curious to as how they got this to happen.
And believe me, I've explored how to do this. I used the same CONTRACT type (Item Exchange), and if you say "Well Corny, maybe you need to do stuff like 599,999,999 and not zeroes!" - well, let me tell you that I saw a contract for a Megathron Navy Issue at 399,999,999 ISK (and yes, that is a legit contract) - it still said the price summary next to it.

like any good cash cow.... as the market becomes dilluted, its time to move on to better avenues.
yeah 999 scams will be around for a bit, and eventually ccp will fix them. The smarter scammers, while still running the 999 scams, are already looking for new avenues to scam on once the 999 ones go away.
This game will always be full of stupid people with isk to burn, and why not let them pay for an "expensive" lesson. I view the scammers as high priced teachers of higher learning.
Its all in perception ;-p ---- People Say Im paranoid because I have a gun, I say I dont have to be paranoid because I have a gun.

I can see why they do it - but I'm more concerned with the negative effect it has on legitimate business and hence gameplay - scam posts outnumber legit in Jita by more than 20 to 1
i've put a few suggestions together

You must hate the the current situation Amy. I used to watch you and a few months ago, you were the leading "rebadging" scammer in Jita, clearing what I guesstimated to be 1 Billion every 2-3 days. But in those days, you pretty much had the place to yourself.
How are you surviving now?
