So I know I can't hit any debris, large collidable objects, etc Are my own wrecks/cans going to set off a smartbomb or are they safe to use? Anything else that might set them off I should know about?

Everyone I know who has used smartbombs has had a great time, for about three months. Then they get too ****y and set off a smartbomb too close to a particular structure, or in a PvP fight while there are non-combatants around, and get CONCORDokkened.
Friends don't let friends do smartbombs.

Yeah i figured I'd just stay away from them, but it's so tempting when there's like 20 frigates orbiting me at 2km

That's why you have 5 T2 light combat drones of the appropriate damage type in your drone bay.

The problem is not so much hitting other things (note: SBs will hit your own drones too), but that you'll get no warning about when you do inevitably hit something you're not supposed to and CONCORD will just turn up and wtfbbq you.
That, and using SBs in missions is a giant advertisement to any pirate to come along in a cloaked ship and let CONCORD do their work for them.
Basically, don't.

Oh I do, but you can't deny the fun and amusement of popping 12 ships at once.

Back in '03 I lost my first cruiser to a smartbomb incident. I have not fitted a smartbomb since.

There's nothing in missions anymore that would trigger a CONCORD response from smartbombs. Your only worry is hitting another player, or a structure in normal space with it. Also, I believe they changed them so they no longer hit your own (active) drones. But I know for a fact they don't hit wrecks or cans.
But, yeah. These forums seriously need some indicator that the post has ended and the sig has started. |

Have CCP stated a reason why smart-bombing does not give you the usual pre-concord warning?

Smartbombs are already bad for server performance as far as I know, and if there would be a check on each of the targets every time if they would trigger concord, it'd only be worse performance wise. ---

I know for a fact it gives you a warning if you try to activate smartbombs near a player (I guess anything) that would trigger concord action.
Once you have the sucker running however its up to you to keep an eye on what is in range.

That makes a bit more sense, but even so ...

... I would have thought those checks could be done on the client - unless you are worried about desyncs.

Whenever I use smartbombs on my main I also get the concord warning sign.....
They still hit your own drones, unless this changed last patch.

Long time ago you could destroy incomming missiles with SB. It was great PVP tactic against inexperienced torp-raven pilots (missiles were alot slower so it was possible to actually time it right). That was fun!
