I'm about to spend a few weeks training for these I'm wondering if they are worth it. My alt can use the cloak already. I don't think I've ever seen one.

Edited by: Agent Known on 03/05/2009 05:42:01 In short: Yes. They can fit covert ops cloaks meaning they can warp cloaked (unlike standard cloaking). They're not called blockade runners for nothing.
They are also much more agile than other haulers, although they have less cargo space.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but can't they also use cynos?

No just the cloak. I was hoping to move to low sec thought I should add more powerful haulers to my "team" of alts for shopping trips and such.

Ah, okay then. Just have a scout and you should be fine, although blockade runners are rarely caught in low-sec camps. Look out in 0.0 with the bubbles though.

There is almost no way for a blockade runner to be caught in lowsec if you know what you're doing. It can even get passed 0.0 bubble gate camps but that's riskier. But lowsec with no bubbles is pretty safe.
Although expensive, it's a very useful ship and well worth it if you plan on moving valuables around.

Lowsec? Don't worry about a scout. If you get caught in a lowsec gamp, you're doing it wrong.
Your biggest danger is a station camp. Without an insta, you may have difficulty getting out (As most stations don't let you decloak immediately upon undocking).
So, check the station (warp to 10 or thereabouts) to make sure there isn't a pirateblob that wants a BR killmail...if not, then buy the stuff you need from outside, dock, grab it, and get back out quickly.
**THEORYCRAFTING AHEAD**
As you may or may not know, you are invulnerable for about 30 seconds while you undock. You're moving full speed away from the undock point during this time, however...you'll be immune to most anything until the 30 seconds runs out OR you do something with your ship (Turn, align, activate a module, etc).
I -think- that, during these 30 seconds, you could get far enough away from the station to allow you to cloak.

I do a lot of lowsec logistics for my corp, and I do it all in a Blockade Runner, they're very very very very very useful for moving crap around in lowsec, especially in the more dangerous areas where camps that can stop a (stabbed) Deep Space Transport are common.
They don't have a lot of space but they're fine for moving modules, minerals, and T2 frigs around. Use Giant Secure Containers (a cargo fit Prowler can hold two) to give you a bit more cargo space.
And make sure to make instas, use a scout, or wait for the system to be empty when undocking. This is pretty much the only point at which a BR is vulnerable in lowsec, since you can't cloak instantly when undocking like you can after jumping and they don't align terribly fast when cargo fit.

To be fair, as long as they can't decloak you while you align, a DST using the cloak + MWD trick can do the same thing.
But some very disciplined camps can decloak you.

It's a nice luxury but you can be %90 as safe with a properly fit hauler.
Take a Hoarder or Mammoth, 2 stabs, 1-2 nano, 10 mn AB, 3 shield extender, 1 proto cloak
Make the AB F1 make the proto cloak F2
You jump into lowsec, it's camped.
Double click random direction then F1 F2 real quick. At this point they might try to rush you to decloak you, so align to something like a planet or gate, time the AB to run out with turning off your cloak and clicking "warp to."
If you do it right you'll warp instantly as you come out of cloak.

Eh? Are you sure? I don't think an AB can provide the thrust needed to counteract the slow of cloak.

The trick is to catch the tail end of the AB as you're decloaking.
MWD trick does the same thing but gives you more speed than you need while AB gives you just enuff.
Internet latency etc etc all they see is a hauler for 1/2 second before it warps off.

Are BR's worth it for low sec trade runs? I mean is there enough lucre attached to trading couriering from high sec to low sec to make them profitable?

If you got the 70-100 mil laying around sure, I'd buy one.
Personally I can't be bothered to train Indy to level 5 so there ya go.
If I had the skills for a BR I would buy one.

I love my Blockade Runner just because it's a lot faster than any other industrial in terms of getting into warp. It's like the sportscar of industrials, if you will. I also run a lot of stuff into lowsec, and for that, the darned thing has paid for itself many times over at this point.

They are amazingly useful. I highly recommend you spend the time training for one. Believe me, once you get to the point where you are in an alliance with carriers, you'll be making high-sec to low-sec runs all the time and nothing beats the security of a blockade runner.

No, but they can use covert jump portals on a black ops ship which makes them insanely useful for ammo/fuel hauling on black ops teams of force recons and stealth bombers.
With the new covert cyno ability in cyno jammed systems, it's also possible to use a herd of them to drop a few ninja POSs during your opponents non-peak hours or while you keep your opponent busy at one of the gates or next door.
