I just set up a mission running alt and I was wondering which ship to use for missions and why?

Raven is better short term Domi is better long term. Raven trains up skills for the Golem, considered one of the best mission runners available.
Personally I have both trained on my mission alt.

Which ship would do the missions quicker? I've heard of the domi being a great (and only) afk mission runner but is it worth waiting afk longer or just blitzing the missions with a raven/cnr/golem?

I have a pimped out Drake. I usually play with a friend in a Domi with a bunch of maxed drones so he can go afk relatively safe lol.
my skills are still low so Drake works better than Raven (for me). believe me or not Im a Drake fanatic and I would love CCP released a T2 drake or a faction one. The worst part is it cant fit Cruise launchers, but if you work with more players, heavy missiles are nice.

With low skills, the raven.
With medium skills, they're about tied.
With high skills, the domi's a bit better.
However, with high skills you have access to the Golem, considered one of the best mission runners in game.

Astro which one do you prefer? Domi or Raven? And I know some missions one may be better than the other, but overall, as far as enjoyment, and maybe a little destructive mayham, which one? And anyone who has both ships can chime in here.

The relative ease of using a CNR fits my mission playstyle a bit better than the domi. The domi can put out more DPS if I stuck with training it, but it would require a lot more attention than I generally can afford to with an alt. Managing drones and transversal with a small-ish tank can be a bit tedious if it's an isk grinding alt. If you're looking at a main though, I might have gone with the domi instead.
At the moment however I'm training for a Paladin. 1k DPS and a big enough tank to not have to worry, pew pew lasers, and tractor balls of lewt.

I dont think that Astrophobic knows much about Ravens.
They arent anything special with low skills. With good missle and support skills they are probably faster than a Domi in most missions. Also if you go raven your really going the CNR route because thats what youll really end up using(they arent very expensive.)
If your going against Angels choosing the Raven in a no brainer.
Wherever you went - Here you are.

Let's put it this way: - T2 Domi > faction fit raven - Faction Domi > Faction CNR - Golem > Domi/Kronos - Paladin >= Golem
Also, at low SP, Raven > Domi (IMO).
Currently, I mission in a faction fit Raven (CN Cruise/CN BCU), and I'd love to upgrade to a CNR or Golem or bring Liang back to run missions in a pimp Domi for a while. The Mael is out of the question as it's not even in the same league as the other two.

This doesn't differ from what I said.
The time it takes to get decent missile/shield skills is much less than needed to get decent drone, gun, and armor tanking skills. If you're running a turtle domi (no guns), then you're not getting enough DPS. A Cap Injector, XL booster, and 3x BCU setup works wonders with very low SP. You'll be running missions much faster than a domi with the same SP invested in drones only.
How do I know this? I trained the domi first. My alt has around 4m in drones and weak gunnery (1.5m i believe). I wasn't impressed with the domi so I switched to the raven. With just enough to use t2 hardeners, arby launchers, and a meta 4 booster I was already seeing improvements in mission speed. Since moving to the CNR with about equal SP invested in both races' BS, I can tell you it's a quite large gap.

Edited by: Kaptain Klo on 04/05/2009 05:15:59 Regarding Domi fits - is a standard domi fit something like the following?
[Dominix, Mission 1] Armor EM Hardener II Armor EM Hardener II Armor Thermic Hardener II Armor Thermic Hardener II Large Armor Repairer II Magnetic Field Stabilizer II Magnetic Field Stabilizer II
Cap Recharger II Cap Recharger II Cap Recharger II Omnidirectional Tracking Link I Omnidirectional Tracking Link I
350mm Railgun II, Antimatter Charge L 350mm Railgun II, Antimatter Charge L 350mm Railgun II, Antimatter Charge L 350mm Railgun II, Antimatter Charge L 350mm Railgun II, Antimatter Charge L Drone Link Augmentor I
Sentry Damage Augmentor I Sentry Damage Augmentor I [empty rig slot]
Ogre II x5 Curator I x5 Garde I x5
This is setup against Sansha (admitedly weakest for a Domi), and without sentry V (In which case, is it just better to run ogre's?).
Another question is: How much difference does faction fitting a domi offer really?

More damage from guns (MFS), and a faction LAR+Hardeners allows for the use of either a TC or a third Omni.

With Sansha orbiting at 37-50km, the travel time on Ogres will wipe out any DPS difference to your sentries, especially with two rigs.
Faction guns make fitting easier at low skill, don't do any more damage. Faction magstabs ... well they give you a tiny boost but meh, it's for when you've run out of things to tweak I think. Faction repper really does make some difference though.

I'd train up sentry drones 5, and drop a Sentry rig for 2 CCCs.

I've been in a Raven for about a week now, and have run two level 4 missions with a friend in a very powerful Drake. So I get to hover around acceleration gates and shoot at battleships. My skills still are embarassingly low, and he kills battleships faster than me, but that's to be expected.
I have a stable tank of about 400 for Thermal and Kinetic mobs, and did take agro at one point against a few Serpentis 'tough guys' and held them quite well with a large shield booster II and keeping shields at about 35%. But I'm not ready to do it alone, and doubt I'm capable (well maybe Gone Beserk, my favourite).
Sure I miss Minmatar designs, but I'll keep with the Raven, give it the week to push EFT numbers to 325dps 3000 volley (only wearing Arbalests), and then another week to 350dps.
The Domi is just so attractive because with my skills it can net a 900 stable tank easy and hit almost as hard, more at close range. Mabye range could be an issue, waiting for drones or maneuvering with sentries, but if you're like me and likes to orbit around acceleration gates, maybe the big Dom might be ideal.
Another thing is the cost of a Dominix, insuring for 5 million gets you more than the price of the ship. Sure, the rigs are a handful, but they are for any ship, and worth it.
Anyway, that's just an update for all of you who've helped me to this direction. I've already made more money sharing level 4 bounties, rewards and LP's in two missions than I have in weeks prior (thanks KO).
And this may not be any help to you J92 as you're probably an elite skilled player who could push either ship into rampaging monster status immediately.

Nighthawk. In real play, this ship is superior to anything for missions.

I have both skilled decently (not using sentries on the Domi though).
I use both every day and imho, they're both good but used for different things.
Raven (CNR of course) will run missions faster. Dominix = costless missioning (no iskies wasted on missiles) and you can AFK once you've taken aggro. The fit I use is cap stable while my Raven fit is not.
To sum it up ... Raven = pew pew shield boost pew pew shield boost pew pew Dominix = activate armor reppers ... pew (grab aggro) ... launch drones ... go wash the dishes ... come back to salvage :P

Superior to anything? Hardly. A nightmare with a good agent will blow it out of the water when it comes to efficiency.
Still, it's got a few nice options with the tank (active/passive depending on budget), it's pretty speedy for a mission ship (I always fit AB), and the damage isn't bad at all compared to Raven/CNR, especially against the smaller targets.
I tend to think of NH as comparable to CNR in the greater scheme of things. I use my NH for lowsec missioning, and it does quite well.

Do me a favor and post some mission times (warp in to warp out) with your Nighthawk? I have alot of trouble believing that it's "better than everything".

I personally prefer the Domi for it's flexability. Passive shield tank, active armor tank, guns in the highs, salvagers & tractors in the highs (and still decent DPS)... the only thing it can't do is spew missiles.
For many level 4 missions I don't use guns at all, I fit a target painter to grab aggro (and help the drones pop frigates quickly) and then I sit there salvaging and chatting with my corp while my drones do all the work. It might be faster to fit guns and then come back with a dedicated salvage boat but with so many missions being 1-2 jumps out this is just easier for me.
If you want to make a Drake pilot cry, show them the passive shield tank you can fit on a Domi.
