Hey. I have just started eve and I plan on running missions. I would like to build up a skill training plan. Please could I have some advise on what race and ship I should train for and possibly a list of skills or setups to train for/use.
I'm not sure if I like the look of caldari as they seem abit boring, and if I switch to pvp they dont seem like they are up to the task. I would like to focus on training just one race to build up plenty of experience.
My favourite looking race so far is minmatar for their strange looking ships. Will I be able to complete level 4 missions in a minmatar ship solo? What kind of ships would I be looking to use?
Thanks alot

I hear (Passive-tanked) Typhoons do quite well. I also hear they require a lot of skills at V to run properly compared to other battleships though.
Personally I've never flown one, so I can only tell you what others've told me. I'd like to try a phoon one day.

The typhoon works quite well for lvl 4 missions, though you will need a wide array of skill categories to use it properly. It needs skills in three weapon systems: Missiles, turrets and drones (at least T2 medium and T1 heavy/sentry drones). And of course the standard core skills for fitting/capacitor and armor tanking skills.
The fit I use has 4x cruise launcher, 4x medium artillery (720mm), AB, 3x cap recharger, larger armor repairer, 3x rat specific hardener and 3x ballistic control. Rigged with 2x aux nano pump and a cap control circuit. Drones are sentries and medium scouts.
That fit needs a bit practice on aggro control and damage application, in the beginning you might want to drop a ballistic control for a damage control and/or another hardener.
It is quite fun to use and works when you know what you're doing. -------- Ideas for: Mining

For running missions, the easiest way to go is the caldari path. Kestrel -> Cerberus -> Drake -> Raven If you want to run missions in minmatar ships, you'll need more skills due to the split weapon systems.

ive also started with minmatar because of looks and the raw nature of their people. i can encourage you to continue that way. my advice is:
pve: up to l2/l3 missions minmatar are actually feasible. l4 is a pain and skill intensive. so train up your mini ships to battlecruiser. its then only a little skill effort to train for a drake. you will need missle and shield skills to fly all mini ships properly anyways. sure its not the most exciting ship, but the drake will let you handle l4s relatively early on. its slow but tough.
pvp: you dont have to wait with pvp. take your rifter, insure it and tackle most other races frigs and kill them. do that with lots of cruisers too. you will learn a lot with only little financial effort. i found that concentrating on only one race is a bit limiting. none the less its advisable in the beginning. furthermore mini ships are quite flexible to start with so you should be fine.
cheers!

13 million sp's here, some in areas that I'd rather forget...
But, I fly only Matar and have been doing level 4's in my Maelstrom and there's not a mission that I can't complete. Like others have said though, I went from armor tanking in level 2/3's to shield tanking in 4's so it is skill intensive. On the other hand, I find it much easier to do in my Maelstrom than in a Typhoon.

I agree with Gyok, Caldari for missioning. I too am Caldari and I have missions finishing left and right. While I'm missioning now, I'm cross training Amarr (For missiles) and Gallente for PVP. If you want to mission, I'd suggest Caldari hardcore.

Maelstrom, Tempest and Vargur are all fantastic ships.
Not the best for missioning - I'd lay that with a golem / paladin combo - but real nice.
In terms of PVP though, stick with the smaller minny ships. _______________ <Q> QUANT Hegemony QUANT is rebuilding, EVE-Mail me for recruitment info. Item Database |

hey hey
Minmatar ships handle L4's fine but yes they are much more skill intensive the higher up you go. It it possible to skip missiles all together if you decide on a maelstrom but you will still want to fly a phoon and they are recomended by a decent number of Matari pilots.
the Vargur is schweeet for missions and also makes a great ratting ship as do all marauders.
our ships are generally all split weapon systems which can be more flexible than some other races (eg amarr) Drones are great anti frigate and with 2 "utility" slots on both the Hurricane and the Tempest its possible to adjust missiles for better BPC assistance. we are also flexible with ammo type and can be successfull with both arty and auto setups.
as to training plans its a hard choice tbh as new eden has a plethora of things to see and do. initially you should get the basics sorted.
Mechanic/Engineering/Electronics Engery grid skills and the upgrade skills
there s ALOT of choice.
look at the ships you fancy flying and then skill accordingly. if you want to fly a ruppie then you will want turrets heavy but if you like the bellicose (yes i do) then your split with missiles.
bum around the universe a while and see what takes your fancy. ask about in local and make some ingame friends.
Welcome to EVE.

I went with a Maelstrom on L4s with my minnie due to the fact that my shields were trained pretty well, and it let me focus on projectile training. This addressed one of the major Minmatar problems that they have so many skills that need to be mastered to fly the ships. With a Maelstrom you can fit 8 Autocannons or Artillery and focus on your projectile skills.
I will probably go back to Tempests later once I have time to train missiles. I haven't had problems with many missions at all, once I got it fit fairly well.
As for the poster who said they had problems with the L2 and L3 missions, my experience was that the Rupture and Cane ripped through those missions without problems. Rifter/Rupture/Hurricane/Maelstrom has been a fairly easy combo through the missions so far.

/me shows his age
i played lower level mission pre the hurricane and found the Cyclone to be shockingly versitile. the 5/3 setup works like a charm for PVE and having missile backup when arties cant track (**hint**hint** for split weapons) the cyclone was one of the reasons why i lived in my claymore for L4's for such a long time. its also n00b friendly with aits relativly low price point.
a BC is pretty easy to jump into and has the same weapon sizes as a cruiser so the additional training strengthens the setups.

Get evemon here
Pick out a Battleship in the ship browser and in the corner you will see a box that has required skills, click the add to skill plan button.
Then search Battleclinic for recommended fittings. Find those fittings in evemon and add those skills too.
Then in evemon's skillplan, you should see a suggestion thing on the bottom. This will add learning skills that will cut down your training time. Then on the top right hit the optimize button, and this will give you the best attribute remap for your skill plan.
Organize the skillplan adn stick to it.
