I was flying the other day, and I was wondering the viability of having a sniper support ship for a RR gang in W-space. Something on the order of a 240km sniping apoc. Personally, I've never seen any limit to how far sleepers can target/web/shoot, so I'm wondering what your experiences are, and whether it would be viable to bring one along as fire support.

What class system are we talking about? Anything with battleships will be able to hit you from 200km+. Problem is your going to force the spawn away from the rest of the group and it'll be you solo'ing the entire spawn from there on. If you warp out and back in they'll just retarget you again.
So I'd ill advise it.

one general hint:
some systems have "abnormalitys". like longer targeting range, less shield, more shield, less armor, more armor.. yada..
exploit it... or die from it :)

Probably on the order of 3/4. Personally, we've never used a sniper, so I wasn't sure the sleepers reaction. I know they have a preference for targetting "newcomers" to a fight, but I wasn't sure whether the a sniper with multiple bookmarks around the engagement would "clear" his time in the fight or not if he hopped between them.
If the BS can strike that far, however, there is little point, I suppose. Thanks for the intel.

Honestly, I don't think it would work. Sleeper frigs can burn towards you at absolutely tremendous speeds and disrupt you, and BSs have extremely long ranges. Couple that with the Sleepers' tendency to have ludicrous ranges on their webs, scrams, nos's, etc... I think the viability of a sniper is in serious jeopardy. -CEO of AC-AF- |

even the cruisers go 1.5km/s
i d advise against a sniper as you wont be able to get the range you need and the tank required.

no, it won't work, at least not on class 4+. Sleeps simply do too much damage, and can engage you from sniper ranges. Without you being in RR range of your gang, you'll live for about 30 seconds max.

Sleeper frigates pulse their MWD constantly to maintain range, once they're surrounding you you'll never get distance again without an MWD yourself. The cruisers tend to stay out of your optimal, I was chasing one earlier who was determined to keep out of my 60km lock range

I have actually tested this out solo in a class 3 worm hole. I fitted a Rokh for max range optimal (250k) and here's my observations.
While you can shoot and do damage from that range, unless your sniping skills are considerably high, you won't be doing much dps to the ships. I've been able to take out frigates with crappy damage skills I have, but cruisers would just rep themselves up like i wasn't even hitting them.
If you're in a gang with people who are much closer to the target, eventually the ships will be traveling far away from them and closer to you. This makes ships without range frustrated.
Also Battle ships have a hit range of about 230k-240k so damn near max range. Cruisers are around 150k i think, and I have no idea about frigates.
IMHO a small group of max range snipers can be a very vaulable assest for dropping frigates and cruisers before they can get within web or point range, but you'll need some tank other then range for tank on BS.
You'll also be usuing generous amounts of warping away to your favorite planet to maintain range.

I suspected something like that. The frigates generally I wouldn't expect to be a problem as I should be able to drop them unless they all decide to come howling in at once, but if the battleships can smack you around at 240km, then there's not much choice but to fit a heavy enough tank... meaning you'd be significantly better off in with your RR gang.
Rats. Yet another way wormholes aren't like pvp... glad I asked before I tried it.
