Good afternoon fellow eve'ers;
I have a quick question I'm hoping someone will be able to answer for me regarding weapon choice on a raven for doing level 4 missions. I currently do not have the capacity to run level 4 missions but my plan is to be able to do just that with a raven.
Anyways my question is this:
Torpedos or Cruise Missiles?
I see the advantages for both but does one hold a distinct advantage over the other or is it a matter of preference? I've been scanning the forums for information regarding this but I've yet to find anything that gave a difinitive answer to this question.
Anyways Thanks in advance for the replies!
Cheers,

It is pretty much accepted that cruise missiles are the weapon system of choice for missions, as the extended range is invaluable in taking out certain rats that stay out of torpedo range. There are a few people who use torps in missions, but the range restriction means you spend a lot of time slowboating around trying to get into range to hit things. <-------------------------------------------------> "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." -Albert Einstein |

You will get as many opinions as posts on this topic. Personally though I like to have cruise missiles as their range and good dmg is very nice.
If you go with torps you will need an AB and/or a painter which means less slots for your tank, that might make a difference to a low skill point mission runner.

I'm getting the feeling that it would be best for myself to roll with cruise missiles due to low SP, and the need to clear things efficently. I hate chasing things around

Cheers,
Lot of opinion on this, not to mention silliness an wasted emotion.
Here's mine, for what it's worth:
For about 90% of L4s, cruise missiles work out better due to the changes in the missile damage formula.
With the right combination of skills and rigs, cruise can be used against anything from dessies to BS; the same cannot be said of torps. Javelin ammo allows torp hits out to 60KM or so, at lesser damage than cruise. Not to mention higher cost...
Really, torps in their current form are intended more as siege weapons, to be used against BIGGER than BS-sized targets, or structures where exp radius and speed have less or no effect on damage. Maybe that's why they are launched from "siege launchers"...
Anyway, I use cruise. There's only one L4 that I've found torps useful on, and those ONLY on the final boss, who has insane regen.
The mission? "Vengeance".

For PvP. though, all missiles are considered sub-optimal. And people have a point there, since the time it takes for your missiles to rech you target CAN be an important factor.
But, well, for PvP, go for torpedoes. Insane amounts of damage per volley. At short ranges, true. But if you're fighting at the wrong range for you in PvP you're already losing anyway...
