Deathvoucher EnTech MARS WARFARE CENTRE	Posted - 2009.05.07 02:03:00 - [1] ok, my buddy and i were fighting about aspects fo eve, he wants flight to be turned into freelancer. i say combat will be messed up, he beleives it will be perfect, now don flame the post immediatly, thing about every type of ship in every situation, maybe hauling stuff, pvping, or just messing around. Thanks

Thanks EvE isn't atwitch shooter and never will be - every hit is a "dice roll", so to a extent is damage dealt, effects of modules, etc. Only two MMOs Iknow of tried to combine behind-the-scenes statistical calcs with twitch gameplay - and both are dead now. Just too much overhead to marry the two - lag was horrendous once you went over 40 people fighting in any one "zone", clients needing high-end system just to run acceptably, etc. Current EvE can handle over 800 people on one node acceptably, for comparison. The two MMOs that died? Auto Assault and Tabula Rasa, neither of which had to deal with psuedo-3D space. Tell your friend to check out Jumpgate if he wants to see just how fail a twitch space shooter can be. At least EvE doesn't try to be a Privateer MMO, which to date anyone who's ever tried it has failed... Ah, I miss Origin Systems, they rocked :(

Just how would you use them if you're flying from a forward-facing view? You'd have to completely rewrite how Eve works at a fundamental level. EVE is no longer internet spaceships game. adding manual controls for space flight would make absolutely no difference for majority of actions. only piloting frigates, and maybe cruisers, would be affected. anything bigger would be the same, or worse. turning battleship on manual? no, thanks. tho, would be interesting to see how forward-facing spinal weapons (more damage, restricted arc of fire, reduced angular velocity) would fare against auto-targeting turret mounts (less damage, free angle of attack, angular velocity).

I see you never got a big freighter in Freelancer and used turret view (was it hitting 'h'? can't remember) cause lord knows some of those ships didn't want to turn period. It was hard to use, annoying, and I think I flew into planets a few times cause I couldn't see were I was going.

If you get frustrated with flying your ship, you could go and knock some unsuspecting beastie into a bush, grind up your levels and or RP in some bar. EVE is fine just the way it is.
