Hello all! Recently my alliance moved regions and the base for our corp is in Ammatar space, and I would like to build standing so A) I don't get shot and B) I can refine in the region. Was wondering if it's probable to do missions without hurting my Minmatar or Gallente standings.

No.
The only regular missions that affect faction standings are storylines, and you WILL take aderived standing hit to Minmatar for running them, with a lesser hit to Gallente. Period.
Only way you can raise faction without taking a derived hit are ratting, COSMOS missions, and datacenter missions. COSMOS aren't repeatable, not sure on datacenter.

Datacentre missions are not repeatable.

Also I've been killing rats in the belts I mine in, granted they are .8 but I've gotten no standing ups.
Yes you do. If you rat Sanshas, you'll get Amarr increases.
You only get ONE increase per time period (think it's the bounty award period, but don't remember for sure) for the highest-bounty rat killed that time period. So, if within the bounty period, you killed 3 frigs and one cruiser, you'd get a small increase for killing the cruiser ONLY.
To max the increases, you need to switch systems and have at least one kill during the time period.
That's also why people rat for status in nullsec - that's where the highest-bounty rats are.
Remember, only the highest- bounty rat you kill in each system during the time period counts for a standings gain. Use the Tranactions tab in your Character Sheet to see what you're getting - and you won't be getting much in a .8 system.

The solution to your problem is the skill 'diplomacy'.
It works like the skill 'connection', except that it gives an instant boost to those factions that hate you, instead of the ones your allready friends with. It will solve the problem of Faction navys shooting at you in gallente/minmater space, but wont help you much in the way of getting perfect refines in their stations anymore.
There are many rewards to having high Faction standings, and choosing to be 'Neutral' to everyone does nothing but limit your own rewards in the long run.

I do not believe this is true. Killing Sanchas will not give you Amarr increase.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it's possible to have good standings with various corps even though they are in opposing factions.
The other day I noticed a character with standings of 9.9 to Home Guard (Caldari lvl 4 mission corp) & very high standings with various Gallente corps.
I don't recall what his factional standings were, but he had excellent standings with corps in opposing factions.

This is easy.
Doesn't work for faction.
My understanding is that there are corps ( Concord is an obvious one ) that do have positive standing with both sides, so if you did their storyline missions you would gain derived bonuses to both sides.
Personally I've noticed that Ammatar is pretty ideal for not damaging you Minmitar standing too much and you'd need to do 1 Minmitar storyline for every two Ammatar ones. While killing the odd frig can be ignored avoid killing faction buildings during missions.

My main has lvl 4 agent access with 2 corps for Caldari, 1 corp for Gallente, 1 corp for Amarr. She has access to lvl 2 agents in Minmatar, but hasn't started doing missions yet there. To get here, she had to turn down all missions against other factions. She does do all storylines, but when one faction starts to go negative, she switches to that faction to do missions for & does enough storylines to raise those standings back up. It is a juggle, but her goal is to have 3 different corps for each faction that she can do lvl 4 missions with.

The only regular missions that affect faction standings are storylines, ...
White this is true is must be noted that there are ways to loose faction standing when doing a mission. If you accept a mission that has you kill ships or structures of an oposing faction you will suffer a faction loss. Also two things: you can raise standing with a corps of a faction that you are not high in faction standing to as long as you don't go below -2.0 to that faction. That is the magic number at which no agent from that faction will give you a mission no matter how high your standing is to the corp. I have had low Gallente standings yet had high standings to individual Gallente corps. That is no all that unusual.
Good luck.

Edited by: Ira Black on 08/05/2009 09:33:02 When you hit the -2.0 barrier and diplomacy etc wont get you above this, there's an option left: run missions for the allied faction.
Example: my Gallente standings were at -4.8 including all social skills (never understood standings till it was too late). My minmatar standings were at -1.8 including social skills tho. This allowed to me run for a (very) lousy lvl-1 minmitar agent. When doing their storyline missions Gallente standings will increase along with the Minmitar one.
With "a little" patience Gallente standings will rise enough to get agents from one their corps again. Ofcourse Amarr and Caldari standings will take small hits, but if you're lucky they won't ask you to shoot factionships in a storyline. I prefer courrier missions or shooting Sansha and their ilk.

WRONG!!!! SO WRONG!
you do not get faction standings. you get secruity increases..
only way to get faction increases is to do storyline missions.
OP check out aranir for mission running its 0.2 and has 3x q20 lvl 4 agents... I am sure you will be able to grind up in no time.

You can keep doing missions for both sides to keep them both happy with you. I mostly run missions with Amarr so I have very high standings with them, but every once in a while I go do a few for the Gallente to keep them and the Minmatards from hating me. Delivery missions work well for this as they give the fastest standings increase ( bang out 16 delivery missions in a real big hurry then get a storyline that is usually give me some kernite and I give you a +4 implant ).

As an aside, what does higher security standing give you? (as in, given you have access to high sec, is there a point on working to a 10.0?)

You can only get up to a +5.0 security standings now. You cannot go higher than that with Concord. Faction standings can go up to +10.0.

It lets you anchor POSes in hisec. 5.0 lets you anchor in 0.5, and i think 6.0 in 0.6, 7.0 in 0.7... not sure if it goes on and on like that though.
