My small group ran into some PVP unexpectedly, we were disorganized and initially going to warp off, but then we decided to stick around (but out of mutual assistance formation).
There were 2 hurricanes and a silly amount of drones flying around. The short battle was pitched, it was a blast, it had a couple warp-outs and warp-ins, all in all a great little skirmish (beside losing! lol).
Once my buddies were dispatched by the other player's drones and whatever else they were using, his pod warped out. I saw a buzz-storm of drones flying toward me, but one of the enemy was in structure, so I figured I'd try to pop him and warp before the drones got through my shield.
Wow. Wrong. lol. Those drones just om nom nom nommed me like cake. I began warping while still in shields, but doom came really quick.
Yes, I could have warped when I saw a swarm of drones closing in - I guess I underestimated them.
My question is, what is the typical 'defense' against a drone zerg fest?

Its hard to say beacuse "I wasn't there" but killing drones first is sometimes a good option.
Its really situational so a hard question to answer. I guess with more experience you'll learn to understand pvp mechanics and in time answer your own question.
I heavily suggest getting out there and having more fights and consider joining a more PVP orientated Corp/Alliance considering the fun you had.

Smartbombs.
The larger ones will make quick work of any drone swarm attacking you, as well as providing pretty 'splosions to make the battle all the more dramatic. |

If you were flying a Frigate, chances are you're not running a smartbomb.
Situational, of course.. but if you were with a group of dudes depending on the ranges of your frigate gang.. Whoever the drones were redboxing I'd have him orbit high off the target and force the drones to MWD after him while the rest of the group would primary them, keeping tackle on your targets. As long as you keep high transversal of the two canes in this situtation you should be able to kill the drones and then drop orbits and just facehug the two canes.
We've been in this situation before, and we run AF and TD-rifter gangs quite often, when we encounter a small group that has drones, we'll have the one who's being engaged by the drones kite the drones to us keeping them MWD'd on, and then we'll shoot the drones out while keeping the host-ship tackled/TD'd. With a bit of patience this tactic allows our rifter gangs to kill canes. |
