CCP has better things to do than recompile thier game for an unstandard, unpopular, and un-user frieldly operating system used by the worst geeks as an end-user operating system. Keep the OS to storing my webpages...and keep CCP working on Shiva

Would be nice, though CCP do not consider it economicly viable, just consider how many Linux users shell out the money for playing it in Windows anyway. Well maybe some people would get second accounts...
There are threads about this in General discussion.

CCP would have to re-invent their patching mechanism if they wanted to implement the client on linux, currently it uses the DirectPlay networking system, and unforetunately that means that linux is pretty much barred from operation.
This is actually a legal matter, if you install and run winex on your computer, and you can actually play EVE with it then good for you. But CCP cannot legally reverse-engineer Directplay and implement it on linux solely for the purpose of selling their game to linux users.
Furthermore Microsoft would frown upon CCP if they made a linux version that worked, and then there might be an 'accident' at the cluster, and we might all be less happy :(

Linux users "Computer geeks"? what you call an EVE player who usually pays subscription money to play a game 24/7 then? :p
I'm a Linux user, and I would be more than happy if this game ever was ported to linux, Linux has become quite the userfriendly environment latly. I tested the new red hat not long time ago, the installation was faster and I had less driver problems than any version of MS windows ever gave me.

A linux "client" for at least the most basic serverinteractions might prove a great idea..
At least CCP could release a bit about the client interactions so this could happen.
Would prove extremely valuable for things like data gatherings, and market stuff.
I dont think it would be great for much else.. and I would no like it if it developed some unbalanced automation/macro exploit.. So just the docked features should be open to this..

I would say the OS percentage would be something like this:
Win9x & 2k/XP's = %95 Linux = %5
Why bother?

Sigh..
Once again another uneducated windows lover strikes again.
Even though i agree 100% with working on shiva, Linux is not unpopular, unstandard and unuser friendly.
Unpopular? - Umm so unpopular that some computer companies <i forget which ones at the time> are actually realeasing Linux on theyre machines?
Unstandard? - Linux is about as commonplace now adays then windows.
un-usr friendly? - If you have an iq of about 55, you can understand linux.
Don't get me wrong, i use windows..BUt i also use linux and the 11 games i do play on Linux are more stable then on windows.
Basheron, after you boot your NEW AND IMPROVED WINDOWS XP OMG SERVICE PACK 2 ROCKS from the blue screen of death, please get your facts straight..or least TRY to know what your talking about.

Windows isn't half as bad as most people like to say it is. (and by most people i mean linux users). On a 'standard' home or office pc why would you need more than windows? fancy running your own apache webserver from work? or maybe you want to be a DNS or gateway for some unknown reason?
I don't dislike either of the OS's but I know that each has its place. Windows is great for everyday use, gaming, word processing, being easy to use (yes yes, i know linux is *getting* easier). linux, while it can do all these things, including freeciv, is just not as well supported. and why should developers start programming 2 versions of all their products when one will do on what is unquestionably the standard for home/office computing.

So popular infact, that you cant even recall who is releasing it. just because one or two of the thousands of pc manufacturers are having a change of heart doesnt make it popular.

I doubt it, but I could be wrong. Where did you see these statistics then? from my experiance less than 1/10 computers use linux in the home/office environment.

you can understand the basics of it, but in that case you may aswell use windows for all the time it'll take to change. Once you start looking deeper and at the real uses of linux it'll take more than an IQ of 55 to use it effectivly.

Hrm, Perhaps someone who doesn't want to be forced into buying a virus scanner, popup eliminator and a whole host of other software just to keep their system secure. Maybe someone who would like their latest, greatest SP2 to not come with security vunurabilities. How about not be tied to the 2 or 3 year upgrade cycle that M$ demands ?

Any OS no matter if it's windows, Linux, OSX or some other POSIX compliant OS would take an IQ greater than 55 to use to it's best ability. Or perhaps that's why people need re-training on the next version of each software package (eg word), or dare I say it you replace the default browser with one that is more stable & secure (It must be the slightly different looking buttons that confuse people).

On the other hand there have been a couple of threads on the same subject and nobody got to make eve go past the intro screen.
