So, Ive been out of the game for a bit, and I come back to 40,000 research points with my agent. Can't remember for the life of me what they do, or how I spend them, but the agent won't even give me a mission, despite being only L2, and having an effective standing of 5.1.
The search function on the forum sucks, so I figured I'd post, and see whats up with this. What are these points good for, and how can I burn em?

Talk to your agent and ask to convert all the RP into datacores, then sell the datacores on the market.
The only purpose of RP now is to buy datacores, which are used in the invention process, which is a chance to convert a T1 BPC into a T2 BPC. ---

At my agent atm, the only options are Request Mission(which says I lack required standings) and Cancel Research(which informs me that all points to date will be list).
Any idea why?

That sounds like a decent stash of datacores to me. Somewhere between 250 and 900 depending on the agent type.
Here's a little link on invention, which has a section on datacores and agent standings. There were some changes made to required standings a little while back, so you might need to run a mission or two for that corp to get access. It will definitely be worthwhile - that's at least a hundred million ISK worth of cores. Possibly more.

And on searching the forums:
CCP never implemented a decent search, and to be honest, I think they're happy to rely on Chribba to continue providing his 3rd party Eve Search ______________________ Isn't it time you learned to fight back? Agony Unleashed Home of the PvP University.

With the latest patch CCP changed the way your skills are applied to research agents. If you relied on your state standings to get to use the research agent you are now required to do at least ONE mission for the corp in order for your skills to apply. Your effective standing with the corp is actually 0.0 until you do one lvl 1 mission since your connections skills are not applied with a 0.0 standing. When you do one mission you get a standing of .01 with the corp and then the connections skill kicks in and you should be able to cash out your research points. Hope that helps.

Clarification: doing a mission for the research agent won't give you a standing increase. Go find a regular agent of the same corp and run a mission for him. I'm not sure what quality that agent is, but research agents require you to have an actual standing with the corporation (not the faction to which the corp belongs) 2 points lower than the standing required to use an agent of that quality and level.
I.E. A level 2 quality 20 agent can be used if you have a 3.0 or higher standing with the corp. If you have a 3.0 or higher standing with that faction, you can use it providing you also have at least a 1.0 standing with the corp.
This has probably changed since you left and you currently don't have the standings to use that agent. Once you do, you'll be able to buy roughly 800 datacores. ______________________________________________________ Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? |

Yeah, that's probably it. I've got plenty of personal standings, but the corp didn't have the requisite amount.
So, I started a new corp and ran a mission. Hopefully that'll start the process of making corp standings equal to mine.

You are making the same mistake most people make when reading the R&D agent description. You don't have to be in a player corp, and player corp standings are irrelevant. What the showinfo window tells you is that YOU have to have some standings with the R&D agent's NPC CORP.

Say the research agent is with Lai Dai, which is part of the Caldari State. If the agent is a L4 Q0 agent, you can use the agent for research if you either have a 6.0 or higher standing with Lai Dai, or a 6.0+ standing with the Caldari State and a 4.0+ standing with Lai Dai.
Go find some regular mission agents in the same corporation and run a few missions. The first mission you do will increase your standing to where Connections will work, and that might be enough to use the agent again. If it's not, you need to keep running missions for them until your corp standing is high enough. ______________________________________________________ Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? |

This ^ I don't know why people are suggesting otherwise as it has been like this for as long as I have been doing R&D. You need personal standing to the R&D corp to use the R&D agents. High Faction standing is worthless for the R&D agents, it's only good for getting access to the other diviosnal high levle agents in order to speed up the the R&D Corp standing grind.
In the OP's case, I suspect he had a non research mission open with the R&D corp when he stopped playing and took the standing hit. Removed. Please keep your EVE signature related to your EVE persona and not that of a real life politician. Navigator |

Not quite useless, as a high faction standing can fulfill the "high" standings requirement, and you only need to get the "low" standings requirement with his NPC corp. Most, if not all my personal R&D agents are enabled via high faction standings, I just have the bare minimum R&D NPC corp standings.

Sorry I'll rephrase... worthless in terms of how high faction sanding works for instant access to other corp agents within said faction as it does not apply to R&D agents Removed. Please keep your EVE signature related to your EVE persona and not that of a real life politician. Navigator |
