I can currently competently fly a Drake with full T2 fit and T2 drones, and I can fly a Raven reasonably well.
Once I'm finished skilling up some things that will help my Raven, I'm looking to train up to fly another race's Battlecruiser and perhaps eventually battleships.
Am I right in thinking that Gallente would be a good idea, as hybrid turret skills would benefit both Caldari and Gallente?
I also have Gallente Drone Specialisation III at present, so I'm guessing that this would tip the balance towards Gallente even more?

What makes it so good?
Any particular bonuses or scenarios where I would want one?

For PVP or PVE ?
For PVP the brutix makes a brutal gank ship with a full rack of blasters, but you'll lack a decent tank. For PVE the Myrmidon is a much better choice, awesome tank and bonused drones to kill well, everything...

Gallente Drone specialisation only affects the gallente drones, which deal thermal damage. (hammerhead IIs, hobgoblin IIs, etc)
There is no bonuses that mean using your own races drones will be more effective in a races ship.
And also Gallente are good, but I'm not so impressed by the battlecruisers since the speed nerf.

Drone spec doesn't really matter as you can use any races drones with any ship.
Gallente battlecruisers are a mixed bag. Brutix is cheap and can pack a serious punch if you get a chance to apply the damage but it is a pretty inflexible ship that is virtually useless solo. Myrmidon, while lacking a bit of DPS, is a great ship in a number of situations but I find it to be pretty much useless for pirating as sentries eat your drones in seconds and you wind up losing all your DPS before you can kill anything.
In summary, the Brutix/Myrm are not bad or useless but the Drake/Harbinger/Hurricane are much more well rounded and solid when it comes to battlecruisers. ----- The Python Cartel - My Pirate Blog |

I already have a couple of Drakes (one for ratting and one for missioning) so I'm looking for something for a bit of fleet DPS that isn't reliant on missiles, so it sounds like it might be what I'm looking for.
I'm guessing that offhand I would need Gallente Cruiser IV which in itself depends on Gallente Frigate III?

Other way around, you need Frigate IV and Cruiser III

Drake is pretty good. Train HAMs, fit a shield buffer, and you've got yourself the fleet DPS you wanted. Brutix offers BS-like DPS but at the cost of all forms of tank. This means it dies.. A LOT. And in fleet battles, people know the punishment it can give and the little it can take, so it's often primary. Most FCs will see a drake and think it's a passive lolfit with crappy DPS, ignoring it until the end of the battle.
However, if you really want said DPS from guns, then yes, brutix is a good choice. Harbinger and Hurricane are better in almost every way, though.

Fan of the harby, prophecy, and cane myself. All are good in both pvp, and pve. _________________________

Funnily enough I already have both Amarr Frigate and Gallente Frigate at III, so it wouldn't be too much to train the respective Cruiser skill up as well.
My main concern is that given my investment into drone and missile SP, which skills can I reuse and which race is going to require the least investment to become effective?
I have *some* medium hybrid turret skills, but nothing fantastic.

Amarr will serve you better. You have the Sacrilege for a missile boat. There's also Damnation, Malediction, Vengeance and Heretic, but they aren't really known for their DPS.
Besides that, the recons only use drones, as the high slots are filled with neuts.
You will need laser skills to make good use of most Amarr ships, though. However, that barely makes a difference as the support skills are the same as hybrids.
And in the long term, you'll gain access to the Nightmare and Phantasm, which are pure sex.
However, make sure you know what you're doing. Cross training early will halt much of your progress, and so will cross training for more than one race until you have at least 30 mil SP.

My Eve plan has shield skills turning up in about a years time for the Nightmare.
Projectiles have a certain appeal for the pure shock factor of continuing to blast someone after they assumed that neuting me would end everything.
