I cleared out Gone Berserk last night, about an hour before downtime, and proceeded to start mining it out.
I was a bit surprised when four Guristas Despoilers (frigate rats) showed up in the mission and started firing at me. I was under the impression that rats were unable to enter mission spaces. Is it a common occurrence for them to show up in missions, or is this type of thing unlikely to happen?

It is quite common for normal belt rats to show up in missions areas you keep open for a long time, e.g. for mining roids in mission areas.
The rats that spawn are the typical spawns that you'll encounter in the normal belts in the same system (i.e. the same sec level sys).
I have even tried to be jumped by a tiny empire hauler spawn when mining a mission area :-)
Advice: always bring a few combat drones to deal with them so that you don't have to warp out and change ships.

Good to know, this was my first time actually mining a mission, normally I hand them in as soon as the objectives are done.
Anyway, thanks for the help.

I think mining triggers them. I've had a long mission that had some good roids in them, and while there were no rats when I was running the mission, a minute or two after I started mining a rat cruiser and frigate warped in.

Originally by: g0ggalor I think mining triggers them.
That's my experience too - it's not until I start mining that the spawns will start appearing.

Only rock mining though, Ice and Gas clouds don't seem to trigger spawns.
Personally, I like getting the rats, every now and then I'll get a hauler or faction spawn and the rewards can be more than the ore.

Lost my first ship (mining frigate) when this happened. I was paying attention and by the time I noticed I was taking damage it was too late and I went POP! Scared the crap out of me. I thought I had self-destructed or something.

Rats will spawn near any Roids. There also used to be a hilarious bug where the NPC's would teleport within different distances to escape drones. It often reached the point you could not re-lock them quick enough before they disappeared and reappeared again. ___________________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

Only slightly off topic:
Mission mining will spawn belt rats. Gravimetric (Roid Belt) signatures from exploration will spawn belt rats.
However, I've discovered that other profession sites (Hacking, Salvaging, Archeology) don't spawn belt rats while mining them.
I've spent hours upon hours mining many millions of ore (veld, scor, plagio, omber) from Mag and Radar sites without a single spawn of NPC's past the first one.
Thing to remember is that once the site is cleared, it will despawn once everyone leaves, so one person must remain in the site at all times.
Side annoyance: You'll get lots of people warping in on you to exploit the site even if it's dry, since it still shows up on the scanner. ------------------------------------------------ SAN DIMAS HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL RULES! |
