My ATI 4850 decided it had had enough today. Running two clients mining I got artifacts after 30min playing. A reebott didnt fix it and after a second reboot I had artifacts during boot (red tex instead of white and grey dots in a grid all over the screen). I have an aftermarket cooler installed, an artic cooler accelero s2 with a 120mm fan mounted on it, and a 120mm case fan nearby and still it seemed to overheat. So really I cant see it being a problem with my hardware, but rather a problem with the client. (for instance ive run Crysis on medium/high settings passive without problem)
Just wanted to put it out there so that others dont have to have their hardware break from playing EVE.

I agree default shoudl be interval = one however - it is your card | drivers that cannot cool enough that is at fault here -- RaTTuS @ InEve, Capital Prints for sale |

perhaps youre right but i cant see how it can be hardware related when im using one of the largest aftermarket coolers on the market with a 120mm fan stuck to it. Especially since the cooler by itself (without the additional fan) manage crysis without incident. forgive me if Im mistaken but id think crysis is a bit more graphic-intense than eve.
edit: even so I find it amazing that the card itself doesnt have any failsafe. just allowing itself to be so warm as to break..

If the card breaks due to stress then it's not the games error it's your hardware. All EVE did was place constant steady stress on the card. WoW and other games will do the same. Before writing a game off as the culprit take a closer look at your hardware.
Sounds like you'd be one to overclock your card? Usually, this is why people get aftermarket coolers. Did you take into account that you might have pushed the card beyond what it's capabilities are? I too have a 4850 and it runs VERY hot on stock speeds with a stock cooler. I had to edit the catalyst drivers to have the fan speed higher to keep it around 55c - 60's under load. Again, if overclocked I can imagine this card getting extremely hot even with better cooling.
These cards need water cooling if you plan to overclock in my opinion.
I would say EVE properly stress tested your card and it did not pass. You should be able to return the card if it's within 1 year of the purchase date for another, sometimes even if you overclock.
Going forward I'd; A: not overclock unless water cooled. B: if running 2 clients at the same time go to EVE menu and settings optimize for performance (won't look as good but puts much less stress on your card).
Good luck

Problems I see :
1: Your using ATI 2: Your running it on Vista 64 3: Your obviously overclocking
Recipe for disaster.

please dont assume to know what I do or not do with my hardware. I was not overclocking at all, infact Ive never overclocked graphic cards (although I do overclock CPU). The cooler was bought for reducing the noise. The fan was added once I realized EVE was cooking the card. Something Crysis, Fallout3, Assins Creed for intance didnt manage to do (note these games I ran passive cooling, the 120mm fan was added when I started playing EVE (after a years away from the game) ). So no.. I fail to see it beeing a problem with the hardware per say. And seeing how there are other players with both Nvidia and ATI cards who have had their card fail from EVE it seems obvious that the problem isnt with me entirely. Still I do see that Ive used the client in a faulty way. The thing you might question is why the new client is made in such a way that you can break your computer.

EVE just ate my Geo 8800 GTS
No overclocking, more than adequate cooling. No history of graphical upsets in any other game (happily running Crysis and Fallout 3), no issues post patch.
Now I have a novel paperweight.
