New to the Recon ships....and seems I keep getting the impression that I need to train to RECON V to have the "UBER" Recon ship.....what does RECON V do for me that RECON IV doesnt (besides ~20days of training)?

That depends entirely on which recon ship you intend to fly. Safe to say there is probably better use of 20 days training time, but it's still always nice to have a useful level 5 skill trained. --- All 390 skills trained. |

from the item description Cov Ops cloak requires "Cloak IV" to fit....How does "Recon V" help that item?

For the Pilgrim it means you neut more, big bonus if you use small neuts, and being very tight on the CPU that 100CPU you save is fantastic. If you go for another race it can mean uber-jamming, using a warp scrambler with almost the range of a disruptor, or 40km webbs. :) --- I smack just for myself.

(1) Force Recons will be a LOT easier to fit (2) All the recon ships get very good per-level bonuses.
Recon Ships is probably the single best ship skill to get to level 5 in terms of the difference it makes to the ship's ability.

Read the item description of a Force Recon.

…since I'm in a kind mood, I'll do what the educators above me are trying to make you find out on your own:
The Recon skill, more than anything, vastly reduces the fitting requirements for the cloak. Yes, it also helps with ewar and weaponry (depending on the ship), but for Force Recons, the large upshot is this:
Recon I ⇒ CovOps cloak takes 400 cpu. Recon II ⇒ CovOps cloak takes 300 cpu. Recon III ⇒ CovOps cloak takes 200 cpu. Recon IV ⇒ CovOps cloak takes 100 cpu. Recon V ⇒ CovOps cloak takes 0 cpu.
Now consider the fact that Force Recons generally sport some 4-500 CPU total, the value of that reduction is wtfomgzhuge!1one, even for the Recon IV-to-Recon V step. ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

Some people go as far as to say that Recon V is a necessity for these types of ships.
I've seen it raised as a criticism that the pre-reqs don't tell the full story - e.g. you only need Recon 1 to fly a Pilgrim but good luck fitting anything on it at all with the mandatory CovOps cloak taking up 400 CPU.
On the other recons where CovOps cloak isn't fitted the bonus Recon ships gives you per level is huge.

Eg: Curse
"Recon Ships Skill Bonus: 40% bonus to Energy Vampire and Energy Neutralizer range and 20% bonus to Energy Vampire and Energy Neutralizer transfer amount per level"
Yeah, I'd say that was worth getting to level 5, wouldn't you? 37.8Km Neuts doing 360 cap damage each is niiiice.

Edited by: Grista on 19/05/2009 04:34:32 Recon IV - V has little fitting impact on most Rapier fittings. Of course, it does give you a greater web range, which is the point of the Rapier. As others pointed out, this is at the cost of about 3 weeks of training.
That said, it helped me keep both a cyno and probe launcher online in the Falcon, if memory serves. Before the latest ECM changes, Recon V also gave you something like a 200km optimal with the FM skill at IV.
edit: While Recon V is something you should have if you're going to specialize in the ships, it's not necessary to fly one and be reasonably effective in the Rapier and Falcon, at least.

That's after the advent of 15 cpu using probe launchers, before it used to be a godsend. --- I smack just for myself.

Personally of all the T2 spaceship command skills I have got to level 5 I think Recon 5 is the most usefull.

Energy Vap and Energy Neut are not logistics, they are a form of attack. They reduce the enemy cap and increase your cap.
