Ok i would seriously recomend any of the ct jobs i was in the nuke program and i thought my brain was gonna splode i got dqed for crohnes disease but am currently trying to go to the ct field. main reason nukes suck no multiple guess test all answers are written out. **** tons of info to memorize. but to say the least i can say im a better person because of how rigorous that school was. If at first you dont succeed maybe you just SUCK!!!!! |

I don't get it - what's the big attraction?
A lot of civilians don't understand the military. They only know of the downside because that's all they see on television and in the movies.
Civilians only see the hardcore drill seargent yelling and spitting. They only see bootcamp as a harsh form of hazing or initiation. They only see military life as rigid, one track minded, and a bit brutal.
You never hear about the upside.
Some of the officers I've met have two, three, and even four bachelors degrees. Their motivation for multiple degrees is to further enrich their lives and better themselves. They don't need them, they just have a genuine thirst for knowledge and I really respect that.
A career in the military is two fold. Duty to your country and personal enrichment of mind, body, and spirit (plus the enrichment of wallet is nice too).
The military expects a lot from us. Often everything we've got. But the rewards are equally as great. You get out what you put into it. |

I saw the documentary TV show Carrier, and its pretty awesome.

Oh no doubt. My recruiter told me straight up that it's going to be the hardest thing I've ever done in life. We've never been challenged like this nor have been held to such high expectations before. Not from our parents, not from our civilian jobs, and not from school.
*edit* I don't know how long you've been a DEPer, but I recommend in the strongest possible sense that you start getting into physical shape and start getting into the habit of running.
Your recruiters office will have competitions against other offices. They'll test your knowledge of marching orders, the eleven general orders, sailors creed, and physical endurance.
That means pushups, situps, and running a mile and a half. The military is a culture of fitness. Something you'll hear a lot. |

Congrats! ^_^
Now, my first piece of advice, would be to go google articles and accounts of Navy basic military training. Get ready for everything to come.
P.S. When you actually fly to wherever your going; sleep. Sleep the WHOLE flight. Sleep when you're waiting at the USO, sleep on the bus ride if possible(Especially if it's a long, LONG distance to the base). It is very likely you will not have any sleep for two days, literally awake the entire time. When I was at basic training(discharged in basic due to heart condition) the trainee's further along us that were left to watch over us made us stand the whole night. Literally for hours. Sleep, sleep, sleep. |

Ganna be on a carrier huh? Your actually quite lucky... In a sense..
If the shat were to hit the fan that thing is protected with the fleet around it and statistically you would have to lose half the fleet in order to simply get to the carrier, little lone sink the beast.
As far as benefits go, there are many, I was never in the military but I have many family members who were in the navy and airforce(hell even the marines) and as far as benefits go its great, most everything is tax free or simply free and if you live in base housing you dont have to pay rent, electricity, water, heat or anything besides internet and phone, hell if you live off base they give you extra monthly to pay for that stuff anyways.
While all this can be said there are many disadvantages, your employers are a pain, you might be deployed and away from home for several months, you could actually get shot or worse courtmartialled, and the quarters on those ships are pretty cramped if your a tall guy.
All in all if you want to serve your country through patriotism or simply because you dont have anywhere else to go, the military is for you, if not then you might regret it horribly as soon as you join.
Hope this helps.

That's pretty much why I enlisted. I've got hundreds of student loan rejection letters. The banks aren't lending anymore. Nobody can get a student loan for any school.
Plus even if do manage to get into school, there are no jobs left. Not even for McDonalds. My little sisters who are in high school can't find a part time job anywhere. I'm lucky to still have a job (although it's crap), but the store is going through yet another wave of layoffs and I'll be unemployed soon. ______________ Some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn. |

See I tried to join for that reason and was found medically unfit. This was back in 2005 when they were recruiting near everyone. I'm physically fit, it's just that ive got nasty asthma, and a few other issues which ended up preventing me from joining.
Since that time it is no longer even beneficial for me to join, unless its specifically to save my country during a time of global war. |

no idea what it's like in the US, I'm in the UK however and seriously considering doing similar. Had my mind set on it for over a year now, just never made the decision. Parents don't approve, but I left work some months ago without another to go to and with the job market as it is and my barely-acceptable education the best I could really manage is an ICT desk job, which is all kinds of dull.

Iraq. "Foreign" base pay+combat pay+hazardous duty pay+language skill pay+ special qualification pay..(airborne, specops, etc.) etc etc etc. Plus the retirement pension when you're done.
Or something like that.
Not exactly sure how it works..
Not to mention the tax exempt status you get to enjoy whilst deployed in a combat zone.
I like MRE's too, especially jumbalaya or spaghetti..those were my favorites.

edit: Congratulations on joining, not many people actually have the balls to do it. They pretty it up with phrases like "I was too smart to do that" or something.

Hey,that's just a few idiots. Most of us are behind the servicefolk all the way. It's just that the idiots get first shot at the front page.
I went into a public-'ouse to get a pint o' beer, The publican 'e up an' sez, "We serve no red-coats here." The girls be'ind the bar they laughed an' giggled fit to die, I outs into the street again an' to myself sez I: O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, go away"; But it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play, The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play, O it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play.
I went into a theatre as sober as could be, They gave a drunk civilian room, but 'adn't none for me; They sent me to the gallery or round the music-'alls, But when it comes to fightin', Lord! they'll shove me in the stalls! For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, wait outside"; But it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide, The troopship's on the tide, my boys, the troopship's on the tide, O it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide.
Yes, makin' mock o' uniforms that guard you while you sleep Is cheaper than them uniforms, an' they're starvation cheap; An' hustlin' drunken soldiers when they're goin' large a bit Is five times better business than paradin' in full kit. Then it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, 'ow's yer soul?" But it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll, The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll, O it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll.
We aren't no thin red 'eroes, nor we aren't no blackguards too, But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you; An' if sometimes our conduck isn't all your fancy paints, Why, single men in barricks don't grow into plaster saints; While it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, fall be'ind", But it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind, There's trouble in the wind, my boys, there's trouble in the wind, O it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind.
You talk o' better food for us, an' schools, an' fires, an' all: We'll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational. Don't mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face The Widow's Uniform is not the soldier-man's disgrace. For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Chuck him out, the brute!" But it's "Saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot; An' it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' anything you please; An' Tommy ain't a bloomin' fool -- you bet that Tommy sees!
