Hi. I'm using Dual 800 AC's T2 on my Maelstrom in missions. Problem is, I'm not hitting worth craxp. What I'm wondering is if it's tracking related, related to my speed, orbit or even ammo. I just did Mordus Headhunters lvl 3 just to test my new set-up and when I hit, I REALLY hit. Problem is it almost never happens. I tried everything: carbo lead for distance, emp, phased and proton for close to mid and depleted for in between. I don't use a TE simply because I've looked through dozens of other Mael-fits and very few use them, so I gathered tracking shouldn't be an issue with 800's (T2 BTW), like it is e.g. with 1400 Arys. In general, emp seemed to work the best but still no good. Sure, I can do it over again with just emp, an AB or whatever, but you might see something than I'm not.
What am I doing wrong? I have decent skills (37 mill SP), and good modules fitted. I'm also thinking about speed... I was webbed most of the time and without any AB. Would speed and orbit have helped? What else is there? The NPC:s were apprx 7,6 km from me almost all the time - it would seem perfect for my 800:s but nope.
It may sound obvious for hardcore players in here, but I haven't been playing for long and quickly became uncertain of what I went wrong. Please help. Any constructive comments are apppreciated. :)
All the best - RR.

Hey,
If you're running L3's, I'd downgrade to lowest tier (D425) AC's and use EMP. Don't forget the ambits because they're there to help you kill stuff before it gets in close. Also, you don't really need a whole hell of alot of tank for L3's, so consider throwing a TC on there for giggles.
Best of luck

Battleship weapons are for shooting battleships. Take the mael into an l4 or use a cane.

I concur. Your gunz are too big.
Just for reference: I do L3s in a Jaguar.

Intresting. A TC - I hear ya. :) For things that get close, and for everything else mostly, I use my trustworthy Valkyries II, and when it comes to tank - I also do 4:s (or did when I played last year) but most of all I prioritize safety.
Maybe I should try to go back to my 1200 or 1400 arys after all, with TC and/or TE. With this tank I could fit an AB (happy L? ;) ) anf probably do most 4:s as well.
I'll give 425:s and/or TC a shot first. No point in using gyros if u can't hit so I'd might as well use TC's insteead till I figure the DPS out. I'm so close to getting everything just right. Just need your help with that hardcore polishing. :)

Use gyros, and use short range ammo.
The optimal range of auto's is neglectable. You can change ammo a bit to get different damage types, but stay with high damage ammos (which are short range ones, but since they dont affect AC range it doesnt matter).
Tracking enhancers give a large boost to optimal range, and a small one to tracking. A large boost to a crappy optimal range is still a crappy optimal range. So its only use is a small boost to tracking. But then just stick to tracking computer in a mid slot, or even a web.

Edited by: Acinonyx Jubatus on 20/05/2009 00:44:03 Web/tp/TC, any or a combination of those, would help, you don't really need a monstrous tank but if you've got 1-2 midslots "free" you should use 1-2 of those usually in combination.
Could also go from 800's to 650s, or if you're on 650's to 425s, basically the next step down.
I did 3's in an arty maelstrom for 2-3 days, bit tricky to hit at times.
Also, emp is not always the answer, use the right ammo and you'll notice a fair bit of improvement(talking 2-3 volleying through an npc BS's tank with 1200s. Fusion for explosive, sabot for kinetic, plasma for thermal, emp for em.

If you want to use 800mm repeating artillery guns you should probably mount them on a machariel, especially in L3s. If I remember correctly they have slightly worse tracking than neutron blaster cannons so the 7.5%/level tracking bonus can be a big help.
Also, try fitting webbers and/or painters. My machariel uses an AC/torp setup and any frigate that gets within web range (15km with domination) gets webbed, painted, and blown up in a couple of seconds. ____________________

Excuse for my noobie question, but why I can do those missions with a 'cane with arties in easy mode and from range, while you want to sweat at short range?
Let those drones do something!

Use a ship with medium guns for lvl 3s, like a Hurricane. Large autos without ambit rigs/barrage can't touch them until they start breaking into orbit, and by that time you'll have a hard time tracking, even with TC and webs, as you've discovered.
The distances in lvl 3s might be large enough for you to use 1200s. Small rats will usually head straight for you with no traversal until they get pretty close, so popping them with arties can be pretty trivial unless the spawn on top of you.
