Pre-load it now. Update should be deployed in 6-10 hours.
Oh, and enjoy the best "Meet the..." so far.

I figured most people just got it with the Orange box. I can't even remember the last time I played that game personally.

Is it free to download over the weekend, but can be played forever thereafter? Or is it only free to play for the weekend itself? Sounds like a cunning ploy to get us non-steam users to sign up...it might work depending on above answers
I've actually just started playing CoD4 online. First online FPS i've played in since the UT and AvP2 days. I don't know if maybe I've slowed down in the past couple of years but I'm generally getting owned the entire time. I'll finish a match with about 15 kills 30-40+ deaths and get so frustrated. If you aren't killed by a well-hidden claymore, you'll get wiped out by an airstrike, a grenade dropped by the Martyr perk, gunfire through concrete walls or simply shot by a guy with a pistol from the other end of the map because your earlobe came into view for a microsecond.
I'm considering picking up UT3. Though HL and Quake II were more popular, I used to love UT, wonder how similar UT3 is. Will I get as frustrated by it as with CoD4? Or is Team Fortress the way to go? -------------

You'd think they'd have learned from the last time they tried this with UT3...
Expect not to be able to do anything on steam for the next few days.

Good job I already own TEE EFF TOO.
Now I have to choose which achievements to grind out. Spy... or Sniper.
In all honesty - probably spy, That new Ambassador Revolver looks awesome.
Then again, throwing jars of **** at people isn't something to just ignore...

I was a little disappointed with the last iteration of Unreal Tournament. It has incredible graphics, and some fantastic vehicles. I like the tripod of death, but my favourite is the pinball with spikey arms. Where I feel let down was the massive reduction in character models. The previous version had many wonderful designs along a number of themes, which made individuals quite easily discernible, which was great for vendettas. Now, there is a limited number of models which all look far too similar. And I can do without the 'evil goth in leather' Necris. The vehicles are great, but the characters are unimaginative. It's almost as though they were ordered to make it more like Gears of War in design sensibility, and abandon the old design stylings. 'Grim' does not necessarily equate to 'great'.
Still, there is a new 'titan pack' that's come out, so I may dust it off and try it again.
And yes, I get owned a lot as well. But the way I see it, is I jump in and have a blast for short periods, and some of these people dedicate their lives to beating other people. My reflexes are much the same as they used to be, but I just don't know all the subtle intricacies of the maps and so on.

Edited by: Blane Xero on 22/05/2009 11:06:04 Unreal Tournament 2007 (Or 3 as lots of people know it by) was terrible.
It had much less tournament and even more "Unreal" than any of the previous games from the UT series. The "Story-Line" was **** Poor, they should have kept with the Team styled tournaments from 2004, that was great fun.
They cut out bombing runs, which were some of my favourites. They turned it from a Tournament to a "I'MA HAVE MAH REVENGE ON YOO" in the storyline campaign. I didnt find any maps i particularly enjoyed, except the good old Tried and Tested CTF Facing Worlds. I missed the Enclosed-Jungle from UT2004 tbh.
Also, as the above guy noted, the Uniqueness of characters went down the drain with UT2K7, They all look the same. ___________________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

Edited by: KingsGambit on 22/05/2009 20:58:34 Thanks for the opinions, I genuinely find them more honest and interesting than reviews generally. I used to love Domination mostly, particularly with the instagib rifle. No ammo, no reloading, everyone has the same weapons, one hit kills. Meant that it boiled down to skill and not random bad luck at getting caught reloading, out of ammo, pistol vs. flak cannon, etc. I'd be tempted to give it a go despite the hang ups, out of curiosity, but with the talk of the maps and models...it begs one last question. Is Mr. Crow in it?
I might give TF2 a go...the class thing sounds interesting and the graphical style is cool and curious. And if it's free for the weekend, could be worth a try-before-I-buy. I've had enough of claymores, air strikes and shooting thru walls for now. Saying that, hearing the arabs shout "HEADQUARTERS LOCATED!" never gets old
[EDIT]Some git on steam already has MY nickname, GRRRR. I hate that If anyone sees KingsGambit on there, shoot him for me, being the pale imitation that he is.[/EDIT] -------------

Exactly its crap...
I suppose it stops people from playing the classes too much to get hard achievements, but it does make them less special.

I fired it up again, and remembered what part was game breaking - the random chance that your team has the right combination of classes to win.

I've been playing this weekend...it's quite good. It lacks most of my greivances against CoD4 which is a good thing and is quite playable. The class thing is well implemented and I'm enjoying trying out the different ones...so far I seem to be best as medic. The graphical style is odd at first but it's so slick, smooth and consistent that it just works. Considering it's an online shooter, I'm surprised that I can play it without latency with all video options maxed. I really like that you can actually fight back (excepting snipers and backstabs which are insta-death) and getting new items and weapons is great too.
The steam thing seems quite clever. It installed quickly, I set up an account and it downloaded TF2 faster than I could've torrented it. From what I understand, I can buy a game, have it download for me and play as I wish without the need for a disc or serial no. As it works by a login, presumably I own a game on my account forevermore after I buy it? Seems to have the benefits of piracy (choice, convenience, instantly available) with added benefits (legit, no disc/serial, no cracks, game owned for life).
My only greivances are that the server list has no options for any sort of filtering that I can tell and there aren't many of them. The game also locks up on occasion, though I don't know if that's the game, my (official) drivers or Win 7 RC1. -------------

Everything you list here is true, steam is pretty awesome.

I think... there is a checkbox on the bottom left of the server browser that enables a different type of list other then the lame huge pictures and ten server list. That should give you plenty of filtering options as well as a few thousand servers more. The steam server browser / friends join thing is still one of the best (imho) systems around. _

I think the Free TF2 weekend was the best damn bit of TF2 I've played for a while, because there were so many snipers! Oh god, the havoc a scout can cause...
Although, it was obvious some young'ns were playing...
Dustbowl - Everyones in the spawn waiting for the go, when some genius puts an erotic spray on the wall. The gates open annnnd two thirds of the team are still in the spawn, staring at the spray.
We lost that match.
Goddamnit.
Also - for those complaining about duplicate weapons, at some point Valve are going to include a trading system so you can get all "pokemon-esque" with your ingame items and trade with other players.
Personally I don't mind the random pick-up aspect of it. It stops people focussing on achievements and the game can continue normally without people doing ******ed things to get little bits of justification.
Yeah, it kinda sucks because you aren't rewarded - but tbh I play TF2 to kill a lot of people, not for stupid little badges of honor. |
