Alts...
I don't like em. They spy for mains without recrimination, they help with gate ganking by ramming haulers... they are bad for the game.
Remove them! Remove them now!

Agreed. If the reasons arn't obvious already, then I don't feel the need to explain any further. But to put it in one word, there is no risk for the main. Alts should say who the main characters are that they belong to.

/agree that characters created in game should have a note as to what other characters belong to the same account. Could be an added attachment to the Bio.
**Note: This person has a very familiar relationship with <insert other characters names here>
As for alts, I don't have one, yet. Right now I don't see the need for an alt, as my main can do and be whatever he wants, and I would rather spend the time training skills on my main then making an alt and donating skill training time to him instead of my main. He's my main, that's why I play him. If I want to do something different, I'll go buy the skill and start training it while I continue to do what I do better. - Bunny is not currently here. He is on a SpecOps mission to kill the leader of a small third world country, the first step on the road to world domination. |

I use my two alts to help out with various tasks. I have one alternate character camped out at a remote mining post. I play him and use him to collect Kernite whenever my main character is occuppied with other tasks such as hunting rats or whatever. I can still get some mining in without having to bring my main character home.
Last night, my main character was in a remote system mining Jaspet and Hemorphite when a couple of gankers showed up in local. I pulled in my mining drones a minute before the gankers showed up in my belt. After a brief firefight, I decided 2 vs. 1 wasn't in my best interest and docked. Since we were the only three players in the system, I switched to my mining alternate and let the two gankers float around alone until they got bored and left.
My other alternate character I developed mostly for hauling. My old corporation always wanted me to fly 30 jumps to help with deep space mining operations. I was happy to help, but it disrupted my own mining and manufacturing efforts. I quickly figured out I would be better off developing another indy pilot and parking him where we were mining. When the corp showed up, I would simply switch characters and I'd be all ready to help haul ore. When we finished, I'd switch again and take care of my own personal business.
I now use that particular character to ninja mine in 0.0 space. He's always on station and ready to grab rare ores whenever I need some zydrine or megacyte. He can collect enough to fill his hauler and ship it back to my home base. My main character can stay wherever I want to use him at the moment. My other alternate can mine common ores if the gate gankers are too thick for ninja mining and I don't want to use my main character.
All three characters are members of my same corporation, and I don't use any of them for spying or player killing.
Developing a couple of "usable" alts only requires a few days' training away from your main, but the benefits can be quite far-reaching, depending on what you're trying to accomplish.

Edited by: Clyde Barrow on 08/09/2004 16:54:13 When will people realise alts will never ever be removed from the game
Here's why...
I've got 3 characters. Each one has a specific role-play background that has nothing to do with either of the other 2 chars. Each one of my characters has a similar number of skill points. The 'first' char I made (my "main" if you like) has slightly less points than the last char I made. Does that make him an alt? Nope - because I don't have alts... I have 3 individual well-developed characters.
Now if you want to stop griefing or 'alt' abuse of 1 day old chars etc, I'm all for CCP introducing some kind of restriction on them i.e. only allow 'alts' that have had a specific number SP's invested in them from leaving a station for example.

People might not like alts, but think about this.
Say your at CORP WAR, or in 0.0 in LOCKDOWN MODE at a safespot. With only 1 character, your stuck to sitting in the station , a safespot or logging off. How much fun is that and how long would you play the game if it was like that for you most of the time? I think if CCP removed the ALTS and people couldn't play the way they wanted to , you'd see a lot less people online. Not very good for business on CCP's end.
Therefore, they will never be removed! *With a gun barrel between your teeth, you speak only in vowels.* |

uh get rid of power of 2 accounts too! CCP doesn't need the money!!! only 1 account per IP or Credit card!!!
</sarcasm>
alts will always be around, especially if you have the money. Punishing everybody because there are a few bad apples will never be an equitable solution. They'll always find new ways to abuse the system.

ALTs are probably the single worst design decision CCP made when starting EVE.
That said since they are here there is no way they will get rid of them. They are here to stay.

Keep em. I dont wanna know who is an alt and who their main character is. It keeps the paranoia flowin. Besides, if somebody has a main character that is a pirate, and the try to start fresh, who would belive em? Letting people know who your alts are automaticly gets you a sterotype, right or wrong. |
