Strategic
strategy - scheme: an elaborate and systematic plan of action
It seems pretty obvious but its also obvious that people are expecting these ships to be just another ganker sitting in a blob somewhere.
Sure thats a strategy but its hardly elaborate and doesnt involve a lot of planning. As a solo or small gang ship I think these ships are awesome to the point of being OP'd in some cases.
Im about to have an alliance war and im going to use my proteus to prosecute it, I'll keep you up to date. I dont expect to die given the strengths of the ship in the role that I will use it.
Proving once again, that, I AM BETTER THAN YOU. |

Oh and unless YOU have used one (Yes I have) and / or bothered to check it in EFT (Yes I have) then you probably don't have a great deal of useful information to post so just read and DONT EMBARRASS YOURSELF with a post.
Thank you.

Strategic is a misnomer really, because it doesn't refer to the role of the ship at all. It refers to the versatile nature.
Frankly, Chick Magnet Cruiser would be more appropriate.

Edited by: Infinity Ziona on 23/05/2009 05:54:51 Proteus opens up a lot of possibilities that were not available to me before. I think that fits the definition of a ship that offers strategy.
Cov Ops + Damage Cov Ops + Bubble Negator Awesome tank + damage Awesome speed + damage Good ECM + damage
Thats a few of them. Yes they're not THE BEST compared to a dedicated ship but they're not supposed to be dedicated role ships they're multi role ships. As a soloer multi-role is essential. Proving once again, that, I AM BETTER THAN YOU. |

They're hardly cost-effective at present, but they're amazing ships.
Best of luck to you in your campaign.

They aren't cost effective like the guy above said but they are indeed amazing. People that say no are either not very bright or are trying to hammer out a setup that another ship already does, and then whine how t3 falls short.
Take the legion for example, you set it as a laser or missile boat and there are cheaper and just as good if not better options. Set it up so it is quiet unique and all of a sudden you have a pwn mobile. The biggest obstacle to these ships is peoples close mindedness. |

Now that's something the Proteus didn't open, however the rook did, no? Parrots, commence!

From my point of view (a solo / small gang pvp'er) the strategic cruisers are going to be invaluable. Being able to swap a subsystem to enable it to perform different tasks/support is an advantage that no other ship can rival.
Yes the prices are unstable at the moment, but in the near future when the costs are a little less, being able to swap one subsystem rather than another ship class to meet the need at hand, is an innovation.
I think they're going to be ideal for me - obviously I cant speak for everyone else, but they fit a niche. I personally have all nanite related skills to max which will enable me to use these ships more effectively and hopefully as they were intended to be used - some people it seems have the view that these ships are an extension of HAC...which I don't think they are.

So all of 1 unique option that you didn't have before then?
Don't get me wrong, I've got a Proteus (Probably the best T3 cruiser, though certain loki setups can compete). I've gotten a few kills with it, maybe 5, not enough for me to consider myself experienced with the ship or anything. But the whole "multiple possibilities" as a selling point isn't really valid. For one, there's only a handful of viable setups for each, but more importantly, the ships have very limited cargobays, which means they can't hold spare subsystems+fittings (can barely hold ammo, not even going to get started on cap charges if you're fit uses an injector). That means for all their versatility when you're putting it together, the ship you undock in is the ship you're going to be flying. And that means whatever you're spec'd it out for, you can compare it directly to another ship for that role, and that's when T3 really starts to come up short, even before factoring in ISK cost into the equation.
