Hai!
Yeah, I know this has been asked more times than I've petitioned lost ships, but Mrs FireFoxx and I were thinking of hitting Iceland this year.
From the looks of the brochures, it's either Northern Lights+Fanfest, or Everything Else(tm), am I right in thinking this? Or are the tour companies basically taking the monkies?
Was thinking of doing a fairly standard 7-10 day tour of southern Iceland, taking in the standard attractions, in the summer. Then perhaps a weekend break later in the year (perhaps coinciding with either Airwaves/Fanfest + NorthernLights).
I guess the question is, does this sound sane? It's like ú400-800 to see the Northern Lights in Oct, and "there are no gurantees that you will see the lights in the 3 days you are there". Also, is there anything off the tourist trail that's worth seeing (other than CCP). Worth noting that I am a photographer in spare time, so landscapes would be good.
Thx in advance.

While Iceland is epic in the summer, fanfest is tons of fun.
So it depends on which you prioritize. An awesome time where the sun never goes down, or fanfest?

There are loads of cheepy hotels out here, it just depends what kind of things you want, You can also suprass expensive tours by renting a car and doing the drive yourself, which I highly reccomend.
I'd recomend going around fanfest, hey it may be colder but its still a fun experience..
As far as I know the side-ways rain trip everyone took to the blue lagoon is still celebrated as a once in a lifetime experience
Its also beautiful at this time of year
Actually the weather should be better this year, and everything else is a bit cheaper now, especialy for forginers.

Sorry to hijack thread :/
I have a aging grandmother at 68 years.. she allways wished she could go to iceland.. she recently told me.. She is a little weak on the legs.. so snow/ice is almost a no go for her, tho she is a tough old lady :)
I wonder how she would fare in iceland on october.. i picture icland in that month with some snow/ice.. seems like a cold holliday.. and how about all the tourist attractions?

We went last year and whilst we had a great time - wished we had gone for longer to see some of the touristy bits. So this year we have tagged a few days on to the start of the holiday. We plan on seeing the northern lights also as they start around sept through to april according to some sites, but ú400 does sound really excessive if you only mean for the northern lights trip its self? One company we looked at were 4700 isk about ú24 per person. To save some more cash we also found it cheaper to book outside of the fanfest packages - but we also haven't gone for a hotel that was on the fanfest list - so it may be a shed when we get there LOL.
In answer to the weather - well who knows, but last year I went expecting it to be snowy and stuff and it was actually warmer in Iceland than it was in the UK - yes it was chilly but didn't encounter ice.

I was stationed there for a year back in '05 so if you have any specific questions feel free to ask.
If you do decide to rent a car to see the southern bit of the island (beautiful btw, lots of caving and beautiful hiking to be done) make sure you get a 4 wheel drive vehicle. Most of the roads away from major cities are NOT paved and are gravel. Gets rough in a normal car.
I took a trip up to Akureyri in the North during winter, absolutely beautiful. There is Glacier Bay on the southeast bit. Supposed to be very pretty, they should also do trips out to whale watch there. You can also go see the permaglacier in the middle of the island, I believe they have snowmobile trips 'n such there.
If you fly in you will most likely fly into Keflavik (possibly Reykjavik but I always flew into Kef which is where the base was). Reykjavik is the capital, fantastic city. Lots of sites to see and take pictures of there. The base used to do tours but I'm sure they have something setup or you could find a guide online. The nightlife is outstanding there, beautiful women, awesome music. Many times I'd go out at about 2300 or 2400 (they start partying late) and the clubs wouldn't throw us out until the sun came up (when it did come up) at 0800 the next morning.
You'll have a good time. Keep in mind its very expensive there. I doubt its changed much but a decent steak at TGI Fridays in Reykjavik used to cost me at least $50 by itself, booze is pretty expensive too so bring lots of spending money.
Do a summer trip over a winter trip. The weather in the winter is BAD. I've seen grown men blown down by the winds. The fire deparment on bad days would have to pull the trucks in front of the elementary school to block wind so the kids could make it inside from the bus. You also get the many feet of snow. Not to mention at Winter Solstice the sun kinda peeks over the horizon and vanishes at about noon, its dark the rest of the time. During summer solstice its always light with the sun just barely starting to drop around midnightish.
I know, long post. But it brings back alot of memories
