Originally by: Reven Cordelle 10 Years is a long time. Possibilities I can see are;
- Ambulation gets released and CCP spend substantial time filling it out with Gambling, Bars and customisable personal spaces. Ambulation becomes a success, earning the title of "Second Life in Space with Stunning Graphics" and attracts legions of subcultures from Second Life. Pod-pilots refuse to accept the existance of the "S&M Crowd in Space" or "Furries in Space" Corporations.
Thankfully, these corporations are perpetually wardecced.
However, EVE becomes two games and people cry out for combat in stations - stating that "If people won't undock, at least let me stab them in the buttocks with a butter knife."
Ambulation brings EVE its first game related death, where a wellknown, successful CEO commits suicide in real life after betting away his entire corporate fortune with a pair of Queens. There is a funeral event, and Pod-pilots call out that "EVE Gambling PVP is hardcore."
On the following patch day, Gambling is nerfed and has a monetary cap of 500 million ISK per bet. Massive uproar follows, but EVE marches on.
OR
- EVE dies, after another mighty nerf from the CCP crew causes the game to break beyond comprehension. The only ones left are Miners - who are selling Tritanium for 0.5 isk a unit as no one is left to buy. The game drops in popularity under more expansive projects (Infinity, Black Prophecy) and eventually falls in rank as "A game where you can blast rocks and pretend you're actually doing something constructive." EVE eventually shuts down in 2021 with the devs stating that "Chribba has finally mined all the Veldspar, We don't know why - but it just won't respawn".
In its dying days, EVE sees a maximum of 250 players online at any one point. The Goons have left for more popular MMOs, leaving their space to be claimed by single man corporations and mission-grinding fleets. Jita is finally deemed lagless, with only 200 sitting in station.
For the remaining 250 players, EVE goes out with a massive unexpected bang. The EVE Gate goes critical, causing a universe wide supernova that eradicates everything in its path. The last ever intel was from Jita local - "WTS T2 Invulnerability Field - Only 100k!"
That was an awesome read. Thanks!!

The technology base that runs the game is already aged. In 10 years they'll either be forced to do a reboot, like EVE: The Third Genesis, or they'll be working on a new game with skeleton support for this one. But you're talking about 2019 here. More interesting is what happens to EVE in the years leading up to its 10th anniversary, because they will define the next ten after that.

Eve devs suck, not much has changed in 6 years, awfully. So I hope someone else, and more competent, has released a game by then, I'm not sure I could hold the same crapp for 10 years: half-assed releases, same old mechanics, etc. If that gasme is EVE-2 so be it (so a lot would have to change as faith in EVE devs is not very high).
I hope indeed in two years or three a decent space mmog will be around to replace this.

Edited by: Rothgar Detris on 29/05/2009 21:41:49 Here are some Headlines from EVE's future:
-Today EVE finally implelemented Ambulation on to the Tranquility server. The Server then crashed aproximattely 37 seconds after restart. CCP regrets the inconvience to our existing customers, and our enginners hope to have the server back up sometime within the next month..
-The last two pirates existing in EVE died today, when they dicovered one another while trying to camp the same gate. Both held each other for ransom, paid the ransom, and then blew each other up anyway. They briefly survived in their pods until they were crushed accidentally by an ORCA on it's way to Jita, whigh was promptly CONCORD'ed for violating CCP's new "Don't hurt anyone" EULA agreement. The HELLO KITTY alliance annouced "a day of celebration, filled with laughter and cute cuddly kittens.. ".
-CCP held it's 15th CSM meeting today. It spent several hours listening to the suggestions and greivances of the various player elected representitives, then hunted them down and pod-killed each representitive before permanently cancelling their accounts. A GM was quoted as saying "We aren't here to spend all day listening to a bunch of whiners and malcontents.. We want to hear about all the great things we do for the game. Maybe the next CSM reps will be more.. reasonable."
-Mining officially ended today with the mining of the last Veldspar roid in DST-016, Devoid Region. The last miner, CAREBEAR21, asked what he would do next, resonded "Screw this, I'm going back to spreadsheets..". Sadly this day also marks the second anniversary of the suicide death of CHRIBBA, who took his own life after spending 72 hours straight at his computer without being able to find a single roid of veldspar.
-CCP official;y acknowledged today that the lag in Jita "is a growing problem". This comes on the heels of several lawsuits filed by the families of former subscribers who are alleged to have died or suffered severe physical/mental trauma while waiting in queue for up to 96 hours, to jump in or out of Jita. CCP officialy denies these allegations, but promises to look at the problem in the near future.

Edited by: Doctor Penguin on 29/05/2009 22:24:37 COMMON SENSE:
Seriously, in ten years time you'll likely see "EVE" under an entirely new engine*, but with the same game mechanics. All SP, ISK, Sov, items etc move over to what is effectively a new game. WoD:Online will have been released and will either have been a huge success or a failure (if casual World of Warcraft clones continue to dominate the fantasy MMO market). Ambulation will have been released and heavily upgraded over the years. Sov mechanics will be improved to the point where alliance PVP is not associated with the stigma of POS bashing.
SPECULATION:
In 10 years time, we will have seen the first 5000 vs 5000 fleet fight, and 2500vs2500 fights will have become common over resources. The effective power of the server will have increased by a factor of 100. The entirety of CCP's current "what we want to do" list will be completed. There will be an FPS based on the EVE background.
For more awesome "I'd really hope it was like this in 10 years time" stuff, go read the Tom Clancy Net Force Explorers books.
*Like the Trinity expansion, but applying to base code.
(Of course, CCP could easily cease to exist after being bought by a larger company which then tries to "upgrade" the EVE experience and thus destroys it - see SWG. We then all roll on to the next proper MMO.) ________________________________________________

I'm guessing that bug where you tell it to dock but it still has your ship hanging out 0m from the station until you tell it again will still be there...
That and the overview will still not work right, even though it's injected directly into your brain.

Edited by: Kehyshara on 30/05/2009 01:50:21 In the next 10 years -- easily ambulation and many improvements and upgrades to it. Planet side warefare and the ability to hold sov over planets. The ability to build on planets. Bpos for planetary structures and the requirements to build similar to that of games like civilization.
Joystick controls for your ships finally implemented.
A vastly bigger universe including all new sec/no sec systems. Maybe even a new universe.
Improved mechanics allowing new alliances and corps to establish a foothold over lawless territory.
Entirely new roid belts, the likes of which we probably couldn't imagine even now.
Vastly superior hardware and software technology that improves system lag as subscriber base increases.
Jita becomes a legendary trade hub as new ones are created.
Virtual reality will be talked about more as a new implementation for Eve as I don't think 10 years time is enough to really hone the technology, maybe in 20 years if Eve is still around.
Off topic, maybe in 20 years, technology will improve to a point where you'll be able to totally immerse yourself by setting up your entire room in the world of Eve, where every wall, the floor and ceiling will provide images of Eve as you interact in game.
In 10 years, many more professions will be created by the playerbase as well as CCP. Someone (or a group of people) will have totally mapped out wormhole space and will be included in the 10th edition of Steeles Eve Strategic maps.
A unifying of the TQ and Singularity servers where East meets West.
An FPS form of Eve that takes place planetside and in Stations and quite possibly on ships themselves.
Entirely more and creatively new content for solar systems exhibiting super nova, quasars, derelict objects moving randomly through entire systems like comets and meteors. Suns exploding and new ones being born.
New races and quite possibly alien races and the ability for the playerbase to finally create Jovian characters/fly Jovian ships.

Real pods.
The game would have to come in several flavours to accommodate those who can't handle the sensory overload of 'being in the game'.
New latency reducing methods allow for near 0ms networking channels to operate, allowing everyone to only have as much latency as it takes time for light to travel directly across the planet from their location to the servers (or some code monkey manages to find the holy grail of latency balancing techniques).
A cure for arthritis exists, allowing srsly hardcore pvpers like myself to get back into the game properly again. ---

2013-CCP upgrades the Tranquility server with the latest offerings from Intel due to increasing server population.
2014-As the popularity of EVE increases due to Ambulation and the resulting FPS/MMO blend it creates, CCP is forced once again to upgrade Tranquility.
2016-After downtime on September 6th Tranquility becomes self aware, renames itself SKYNET and immedialtely begins to create it's own characters in the EVE universe.
2016-October 28th SKYNET sees all Jita station dwellers as a threat to it's existence due to lag and taking up valuable resources and immediately destroys all the accounts in Jita.
2017-February(taken from the latin word for purification) 18th SKYNET uses it's army of alts it has created to wipe the Goons out of 0.0 and forces them into high sec just before deleting their accounts.
2017-December 19th Chribba decides that Veldspar just isn't worth it anymore. Gives the uncalculable amounts of Veld he's been holding to a 2 day old noob who dumps it all on the market at once essentually destroying the EVE market.
2018-SKYNET releases a new expansion that when downloaded uses your computers resources to help it hack into the defence mainframes around the world and launches a thermal nuclear war in an attempt to destroy all human life.
2019-What little of humanity remains are hunted down and slaughted by Amarr and Caldari ships that fly over the earth never sleeping never stopping.
2029-SKYNET colonizes the ALPHA CENTAURI solar system in it's latest expansion.......into the Milky Way and beyond.

In the next 5-6 years CCP is gonna run out of new ideas, so they're going to merge with someone, probably with guys creating Infinity, taking their idea to the next level. New MMORPG, EVE Infinity is created, probably the best MMO in the world. People land on Mars, and the scientific discoveries give CCP a lot of fresh ideas.
Obviously a game that attracts such numbers of people isn't just going to stop, even if CCP announces "well, we're bored, EVE is over". People tend to keep alive the things they like/love you know...

As CCP has already moved EvE onto a new engine I think it's entirely possible and prehaps probable if the numbers keep up and no one gets board that EvE will be around for another 10 years. How many other MMO's have had more than one engine? None to the best of my knowledge.
As to what will exist in 10 years time off the top of my head there will be more skills to train. And I may even be in Caps by that point. I'd also expect Ambulation to have been up and running for the majority of the game by then and even the start of big interplanetary warfare.
Beyond that I think the community is going to create what happens and as long as CCP doesn't forget that EvE is a niche game I think it should all be good for another 10 years. -------------------------------------------------- Civil Disobedience is still Disobedience The most damage is done by those that know how and not why |

Originally by: King Rothgar I suspect EVE will not exist, if it does still then that will be a very sad state for PC gaming. EVE 2 ok but just an upgraded EVE would suck royally.
You realise that we're on EvE 4 or 5 (can't recall exactly) already?

I don't see any reason why EVE couldn't still be going in 10 years time.
Unlike SOE for example they've correctly spotted that they can just keep developing the game and adding bits on because it's an MMO with an ongoing subscription model.

Non-existent.
Because there is nothing in CCP's current actions (everyday or longterm, doesn't matter) that suggests they will still be in business in 10 year's time. To be frank, I'm having a hard time seeing them in business in 6 year's time.
This is the safe bet. I would of course be delighted if I'm proven wrong. |
