Hello,
My corp is holding a small frigate tournament. The crunch is that only tech 1 frigates with tech 1 equipment can be used. Thought this might be a good place to let people suggest fittings? I like the idea of limited options, but I'm still scratching my head to the answer. Tried a neut Punisher but couldn't defeat other peoples DPS, was thinking of switching to a Kestrel. I have a broad range of skills so all setups are welcome, the only bone being that I don't fly Minmatar; so this obviously rules out Rifters!
Thanks for any suggestions.

Are you going to require participants to stay on the field? What I mean is do you need to fit a point? ---------- This post brought to you by the worst PVP'er in Eve |

It'll be one on one matches with the rest of the corp in the audience. Aside from that, everything above. Please feel free to post some leftfield setups; taking people by surprise is fine with me

If you know exactly what you're going to be up against, a Griffin would be almost impossible to beat as it could almost guarantee a jam on any other T1 frigate (gets nearly 7 jam strength with T1 racial + T1 SDA at max skills, and you'd have up to four jammers available depending on whether you'd need to web, point, etc.). Its DPS wouldn't be stellar, but against anything other than a Punisher you should be able to wear them down.
Often ECM is disallowed in tournaments of this type, by the way, for that reason.
There's still too many variables to make a clear decision, though. Do you have to warp scramble the other ships? What about maximum engagement ranges (e.g., could another ship just stay 50km away from you if it was faster)? Are you allowed to change ships/fittings between fights? Will you know who you're up against in advance? And so on.

I'll try to be as clear as possible.
The combatants start 30km away from each other. There is no need to fit scramblers as this is a friendly event. EWAR is allowed, although it probably won't make me any friends :) I'm mainly fighting against Punishers, Rifters, the odd incursus. As yet no one has fielded the high end Caldari frigs so I could always lead the way there.
We mainly fight until one player goes into structure, gives up, or warps out.

Condor, standard missiles and mwd...
not much dps, no tank, but keep your distance and hurl those missiles from 40 something km away... _________

Actually, its not really that hard on skills either :-) condor has this nice missile range bonus (forgot if it was velocity or flight time) and while it can only fit two launcher, two missiles every once in a while should break just about every pure t1 frig tank...

Two frigates will usually win these type of tournaments:

Call me Che Guevara; but I just hate playing by the rules. Out of six people playing yesterday five of them were in either Punishers or Rifters.
I'm thinking of taking out a rocket fitted Kestrel, seeing as my missile skills are pretty good, although I've heard negative news about rockets recently. The other option is to use standard missiles and burn a wide orbit.

If you're going to do that, at least use a std missile fit with a MWD and hope you can keep them at range.
edit: prior to one of the more recent patches (sometime this year or last), the Imicus used to have a drone damage bonus. That might have been interesting to use in a tournament. They changed it to whatever it is now (something worthless) at some point.

Well... rockets area bit too short ranged, I'd say... you will be have way into armor before you are in your range. If you have the skills, try fitting aux power cores. I think you can get a 200 or even 400 mm plate on a kestrel and still fit standard launcher.
Still the problem is, you won't be able to fit any sustainable tank on the frigs, so your best tank is going to be range. And nothing has more range than a condor with standards.
overdrive, sensor booster, mwd and two standard missile launcher... even with my pityful missile skills its 43km range. you won't be able to run the mwd permanantly, but it should be enough to get the distance when you need it. _________

Interesting how the rules limit peoples options; I agree with skills making all the difference. It'll be great to see how people in my corp come back next week, with potentially radically different tactics. I'm currently fiddling with an Imicus as a drone boat; my drone skills are good so I'm hoping the humble hobgoblin can prove its worth. Shame that particular frigate looks like your favourite toy that daddy stepped on whilst you were at school
Thanks for the feedback guys.

Fit for keeping range and tanking and use an imicus with 3 drones to kill them while they pursue you. If you lose a drone pick one up from a dead opponent. Don't get webbed :_) --- Sol: A microwarp drive? In a battleship? Are you insane? They arenĘt built for this! Clear Skies - The Movie |

kestrel: standard launchers mwd medshield booster (for the lolfactor) cap booster mapc if needed anything that fits
since there's no warpouts, keep opponents at 30-40km, use standard missiles and hope you don't pop them by mistake before they yield/warpout . Pulse the mwd, use medshieldboost+capboosters if you make a mistake and they get in range to apply their dps. Watch the MWD-ing rifters and punishers cry when your missiles hit them, and lol as the AB fits struggle to keep up with you

Edited by: Six Across on 03/06/2009 12:44:03 Yes, MWDs are attractive. I'd love to fit one on a Vigil for an eye watering max mps, but it's damage output seems pretty slim. Coming to a stalemate over speed v tanking would be annoying for all concerned...

I always use a rifter fit for top survivability because you're possibly gonna get ganged. If your speed tank gets webbed then you're in trouble. Use one small shield booster, and one small armour repairer. To run both perm you'll need a capacitor booster with big enough charges to fully reload your cap juice. Fit a 200 mm armour extender and a >medium< shield booster along with a power relay else you#ll have grid problems ^^ Autocannons with high and low range ammo ready. You'll have insanely high hitpoints in total for a frigate so it'll take a while to break through your shields. When you get into armour turn on shield and armour reppers along with the cap injecters. If you have decent skills like me, you'll rip up that frig tourny
