I'm a long timer player of EvE, and ever since my first pop (my ship), and till this day, theres one belief I got about pirating. The belief is this:
The only people that can ever get catch, as the game is atm, is people who are newbies, and thus not really worth fighting.
The reason is, I know how to use the directinal scanner, and I know how to use local. This is very simple stuff, and those in my mind I believe everyone knows the same at atleast 3-4 months into the game. Once you know this, theres no way to get attacked unless you let it happen. There is no way.
You see them as they come into your system, this is a dead give away. However lets assume this alone isn't enough to get people to run screaming into their safe spots. Directinal Scanner set to 1 AU range. Once someone appears on it, you got about 10 to 30 secs to align and get the **** out, depending on your position in the belt and the guys warp in range. That is STILL way more then needed.
So how do people get destroyed, unless they are picking a fight themselfs?
Of coure if you fly around in a gang, and have probes, this can significally change things, however this is centered around solo pirating.
EDIT: Hit enter, and wasn't done with the writing. If something doesn't look right, update the page in a few min

you catch people by being lucky and finding them while they're pre-occupied and not looking for you looking for them.

yeah luck + some people just arnt very good.
besides you can always bait but that would require more then the 1 pirate of course. Having said that Ive only been blown up by a solo pirate a couple of times, both when I was very new to eve and had no idea what I was doing.

You aren't going to see me on your d-scanner until I decloak 21K from you in my Rapier and point you. That said, people are laughably unobservant plus the d-scanner represents an insurmountable rocket science challenge for many.

Of course...if people are paying attention and using all the tools at their disposable, it's pretty hard to catch them. That's the point. If it wasn't like that, then going into lowsec would be suicidal.
You find people who aren't paying attention. Given that everyone lets their guard down at some point, you can catch people even if they're not idiots.

Maybe your not the only 1 hunting? if you dont want to die, then theres little reason to be at risk but something so simple as bait can make themself's look dumb, whlst unltimatly its you that is dumb..... things are not always what they seem, you can see what char is in local, but that wont tell you if there ratting, baiting or even waiting to lite that cyno on your arse, with that in mind, the local / directional scanner seems not to do much for you (just imo).... stop thinking, start playing

That's what makes this game so great! It's like, you snooze, you lose. Know the rules, know the tricks, pay attention and you are sitting pretty. It's hard to get caught when you have all your bases covered.
Forget to use your d-scanner and you're toast! Something on TV catches your attention while ratting in lowsec/0.0 and you fail to see local spike, your toast!
The lack of local in WH space is freakin awesome! You can creep up on a group running sites if they aren't watching for probes on the D-scanner, have your fleet jump in and hold their cloaks until you get into position, then warp right on top of them! They barely have any time to react if they aren't aligned already and hitting the D-scanner every 5 seconds. ----------------------------------- Look at me! I'm on the INTERNET!!! |

People get caught because they become complacent or are just new.
This is why so much pvp happens at gates, it's one of the only times people are guranteed to present themself as an engageable target.
CCP has slowly been changing things so that soon gates will no longer be a reliable place you can force a fight.
Remember before WTZ? If you missed them as they jumped in due to stabs simply chase them to the next gate/station and gank them there.
Old webs were great, if somebody tried MWDing a gate you could still web them up and lock them down. Now you have **** poor webs and a scram to try to use, by the time you have both applied to a target the inertia carries them back to the gate.
You are correct when you say that it is easy to make yourself hard to tackle, everybody makes mistakes though, just hope somebody isnt tehre and ready to capitalize on your mistake when you make it.

Overconfidence / ****iness has bitten me in the ass a time or 50, and very recently too. Complacency was mentioned, but some times you cant see the trap behind your ego.

Yeah stupid/lazy moments happen. I recently lost a cnr, not paying attention. Had it on AP (I know) and was headed to drop it off in a mission sys. Didn't pay attention that my AP settings were prefer shorter (Again I know). So my dumb arse + overconfidence + AP + Tama = Pod soup. Made a nice killmail though, About 25 pirates salivating over my ignorant carcass :)

Alot of people know better, but cba to pay attention. Ratting for 6-7 hours is more income than your average ratting ship loss, and it's mind numbingly boring. I've got friends that die in that fashion now and then and they simply don't care. Personally I never died when ratting, but same time I know my friends know exactly same **** I do..
..so the answer is; some are idiots, some are newbies, some don't care, others lack focus (drunk, RL distractions, etc). There's always targets around. - I'd tell you why but then I'll have to kill you. And to kill you I'd have to log in. And to log in I'd have to stop browsing these forums. Both you and me knows that'll never happen. |
