This time around we've got a fresh story written by CCP Technobabble, detailing what happens when you go into dangerous places and meet some very dangerous creatures.
This is a new entry in our chronicle series, published on Monday every other week.
(Edit: If the story doesn't show up right away, reload a couple times.)

I love reading the Chronicles.
But I'm no mission runner and don't plan to start just so the stories will make sense. If you're going to expand the narrative of specific missions, please write the chronicle so it can stand on its own. Chronicles written about piracy and 0.0 space don't require that you've popped haulers or masterminded a corp theft to make sense. Don't make Chronicles about missions require that you actually do them.
Besides, aren't epic arcs available to anyone? (with appropriate standing, etc. of course) And thus completable in any number of different ways? (success, failure, ships killed, pilots involved) How can that possibly be a good foundation for developing canonical material?
Regardless, my main point: Please don't let Chronicles become "mission-runner-only" material. I'll just stop reading and start drifting from tolerating carebears to despising them. |

i must say i always like th chronicles. but one thing keeps me from reading them: the presentation within the eve website is HORRIBLE for reading.
can't you PLEASE grab some webdev and create a proper stylesheet with bigger fonts, less wider columns and maybe a font that's more suitable for reading?
or just publish them via RSS feed?!

Cannot say I liked. I really dislike stories written on a way to be not directly and immediately understandable (what the hell is goign onand on what order). Detracts too much from any chance of understanding the contents, specially for people that do not have english as native language (even when you speak it daily for 10 years, its not confortable to read stuff written like that). would NOT read again.

WRITING BACKWARDS DOES NOT MAKE THE STORY BETTER.
The story made little to no sense reading it the first time through. There is nothing wrong with writing in the correct order, writing backwards like this just adds confusion where confusion does not add to the story.
If you force your reader to reread the story to get it, then it wasn't a good story.

I thought the story was great. The perfect size too. And I think the reversed scene order was a nice tool. It isn't exactly new and doesn't need to be. It made the story more dramatic then had it been written sequentially. I suppose some people are too simple for such devices though.
Great job! I look forward to more...

Edited by: Fenris Ulfur on 03/06/2009 16:49:47 English is not my native language but I understood the chronicle well. The backward writing, though its been done maybe a bit too much in the past, makes the story have a different feel then if it had been written normally. To know what happened in the end but not knowing what was the cause of it is something I like really much.
What I didn't like is how short it was, would have liked it to have a bit more meat, and making chronicles about a mission arc is not something that should be done again (Just from reading the comments above I see people are talking about this connecting to a mission arc, I personally have not done the epic missions). Just my opinion. "But rather than that you question my courage, let someone put his hand in my mouth as a pledge that this is done in good faith" |

LOL, if you have to re-read such a short story to get it only because it had a reverse timeline, your short term memory isn't any good. Maybe reading the story instead of skimming over the text will allow you to gain a better reading comprehension. -------- Ideas for: Mining

Though the idea with the reverse timeline is not bad and though short stories are also good - very short stories are not so good.
Maybe the next stories can contain a bit more background stories so that you can figure out yourself what is going on and still leave enough space for your imagination to fill in the holes. I know that this is tricky.
But I think in this story the holes are to big and gaping to fill them. Good potential though.

As stated in the chronicle's description, the chronicle takes place before the mission arc. As such, it doesn't really require you to have completed the arc, and in fact may give you a more interesting reading experience (because you don't know as much).

"The Blood Stained Stars" arc isn't completable in many numbers of different ways; in fact it is quite linear. There are a couple of places where you can choose which way to go, but they merge back into the same storyline in the end.
I do wonder though, is CCP Technobabble going to follow up with the events that took place between the arc and the chronicle, or just keep the trend of telling the story backwards All i care about though is that it makes some kind of sense in the end, i completed the arc pretty much exclusively in hope of getting more storyline content, and in the end it made everything more confusing, not less.

This reverse order did not do any good to the story. And it is to short, there is barely any beginning of it. It just hangs in the air.
I suggest post one story in every 2 week, but it should be bit longer.

I disagree. For as short as the piece was, doing it in that manner still gave time for the reader to wonder and guess at what had gone on until it all eventually becomes clear in the end (beginning?). If 1. had been presented first, there would've (arguably) been nothing to keep the reader reading.

I liked it. Many on here have complained of the reverse order but to be honest, seen on television it would make so much sense. The imagery was there, the idea was there, the reverse order simply meant that certain people did not have the required mental power to comprehend it. Dont worry about it if you didnt folks, simply inject the skill until such time as your short term memory is able to handle it :P
Naeh was good, all joking aside. Very short though; this could have been fleshed out greatly to maybe even include dialogue from the mission itself :)

I liked it.
The reverse story didnt make sense at first (Its not supposed to :P) Once I figured out that it was indeed reversed it made the story much more exciting, even if it was a little short. Great job technobabble.
But I want some REAL info on the sleepers we capsuleers have been farming for millions.

True enough, but the author apparently likes telling stories backwards, so "before the mission" might, in his/her mind, be the end of the story (if not the timeline). That is, when the last few pieces are presented that pull everything together (cf. Reservoir Dogs, Memento, etc.) After reading this chronicle, I felt I had followed the events and kept track of who did what and all that, but also that I was missing a lot of info that would've filled out the characters and their motivations. Lack of information doesn't always create a sense of mystery, sometimes it just makes a story (like this one) feel a bit hollow. "The Fountain" is a brilliant film that chains all kinds of WTF moments together but maintains its rich themes and powerful main character throughout. "Depth of Field" doesn't do this.

Fine, but I think he was aiming at a more basic unpredictability like, "Does the player actually do the mission or not?" Makes little sense to anchor events to something that repeats itself over and over, but to different people and at different times.
In the case of DoP, what happens if the next chronicle (and some more over the next year) explains all kinds of stuff about sleepers? If the epic arc is still around in a year or two, the time distance (between my running the arc and the DoP events) and lack of knowledge on the part of the characters might come to make no sense at all.

Edited by: Deviana Sevidon on 05/06/2009 11:44:45 After having played the Epic Storyarc and read the Chronicle I still do not get the Story.
During the Arc the Player at first ivestigates at first a Battle and after this you have to locate the Survivors of this Battle among them is Karin. Then the Story switches to a hunt after a (Super)Drone. When you have found the Drone it is destroyed by Dagan and then you hunt after him. When you finally found Dagan, you find out he is involved with the SOCT and you get the mission to help the Sisters insert a Spy for the Sisters into the SOCT and capture Dagan.
During the last Mission you deliver Dagan to a prison Ship, escorted by Ships of all 4 Empires and these Ships are apparantly bound to fly to a Rogue Drone Hive.
In the end of the Epic Arc I was more confused then ever and this Chronicle did not exactly help.

Thank your for finally explaining what this chronicle is about, but your post should probably have a spoiler warning for the epic mission arc. I don't really care much myself because I doubt I'll ever run that arc, but others might.

Now that i recall, the first mission of the Arc is quite confusing. You were supposed to aid a stranded ship ("The Damsel" iirc), but when you arrive you actually see the wrecks of two dreadnoughts and a bunch of battleship wrecks around those. Never quite figured out how that fits with each other to be honest...

So sleepers are "creatures" and not "autonoma" interesting.
Personally I don't think a single chron does justice to explain just how the heck someone managed to get a Sleeper back in to k-space without all hell breaking loose (like it's buddies getting the hump and following). A series of shorts that ends up with a guy, sitting in a frigate with a warning in his hold would be better IMHO.
Also the disjointed time line technique doesn't honestly work. It didn't work in LoTR (and to be honest its the most jaring bit of the book).
