I am new to the Eve Universe. I am currently training all my learning skills as recommended by the forums Skills section.
After a week of reading through the many posts I have decided I want to go the Pirate route, YAR!!!
I will have a partner to start out with and we eventually would like to find others to join up with.
We both have almost all the learning skills to level 4. What should be the next step in skills to learn for a noob pirate? We are willing to fly any race ship.
What should be my first Pirate Rig-n-fit be?
Thanks so much for any and all help/advice.

Rifter would be a great starting choice, and upgrading to a rupture when you have the skills |

i second this motion. skill up for a rifter,
minnie frig lvl 4-5 hull upgrades lvl 4 repair systems lvl 4 navigation lvl 4-5 afterburner lvl 3-4 propultion jamming lvl 2 small projectile turret lvl 4-5 (support gunnery skills lvl 3-4) energy systems operation lvl 1
basically those are all the skills you need for and ABing rifter, which is able to hold its own against cruisers and dominate most t1 frigs
skills that are 4-5 can be used at 4 but should preferably be 5

Rifter is a good suggestion.
In general when it comes to smaller ships that work well solo or in small gangs, I suggest training Minmitar/Gallente. All the races have viable ships at every ship size but Amarr/Caldari are pretty weak until you hit BC/HAC level. As far as skills go, there are too many to list but I would suggest making sure that you can use microwarpdrives, warp scramblers, webs, tech 2 guns for your preferred type of ship (ie: Tech 2 small autocannons for the Rifter), other T2 related modules for the ship (Damage Control II, Gyrostabilizer II), tech 2 small/medium drones if flying anything with a drone bay like the Rupture (Hobgoblin II, Warrior II, Hammerhead II) as well as the level IV or V skill for the specific type of ship you are flying (Minmitar Frigate for the Rifter).
I would recommend using EveMon and EFT in conjunction to figure out specifically what you need and to set up a skillplan. Use EFT to figure out a potential ship and fit you're going for and then use EveMon to determine what skills and plan is needed to be able to use those modules and fly your ship effectively.
If any of this is too general and you have some specific questions, feel free to ask. ----- The Python Cartel - My Pirate Blog |

Rifter of Doom! It was my first PvP ship. It makes a great choice for someone just starting out.
...this doesn't even seem to be a regular case of rats fleeing the sinking ship. Seems more like the rats are on fire, the ship is on fire, and the sea is full of drunk Russians. - Jacob Etienne |

Rifter, best choice in my opinion. Fast, agile, cheap and easy to fit and skill up to use properly.
Great ship. |

Get a rifter or any frig really. Youll be losing ships for a while so make it affordable.

Rifter is good but you need to think about the long run. What other good PVP ships do Caldari offer?
TBH I donÆt think itÆs about what good ship is out there because all races have them. ItÆs about what you want... Do you prefer shield tanking or armor tanking? Do you prefer missiles? Or guns? Or drones? Some even prefer just going really fast.
And if you are going to go down the route what is a good ship you need to find the race with the most ægoodÆ ships consistently when moving from frig to cruiser to battlecruiser and so on. Gallente in my eyes seem to do this well.
In the mean time of deciding you can begin training the basic skills of eve. For example Electronics which will add CPU to whatever ship you fly. Another skill would be energy systems which will help you with more capacitor via recharging quicker. There are many more but itÆs a start. |

I really think you should go with Gal or Amarr,
both armor tank and both use guns(lasers are guns)
both have a good line up of PvP ships
both are in massive use so you will be able to get the ships and guns needed when out PvPing
Min are good but you have to cross train a great deal, Caldari have ok gun ships but their bonus is to range which is nice as you can use blasters out of web range but still better to have damage bonus over range bonus.

practice a bit with your friend a bit at first, try out a few different things and then after a few practice sessions go for a hunt. |

You all are great, even though I know you will all probably blast me out of the cosmos when we cross paths :) .
I am greatful for all of your input. I will definitely begin with rifter and will continue to read up on the different ships and races.
This game is amazing, I can not believe the depth and detail of this game. I have played Star Wars Galaxies for 2 years (pre-nge) and have played Lineage 2 for 3 years now and neither come close to the depth of this game. This is very exciting!

Edited by: Rouge Drone on 05/06/2009 09:57:27 Rifters are overrated. You can pirate just as well in a tristan, punisher or kestrel so choose whichever race you think looks the coolest in the long term. There's no need to let them shoehorn you into the flavour of the month.

Seeing as you have just started out, I would suggest an Incursus before going to the Rifter. It's less skill intensive, and still a nasty combat ship. I love my Incursus. |

no its not over rated, its the best t1 frigate going period. kessy might get close.
Slot Layout, grid and speed on the rifter make it a amazing t1 frigate.

The Rifter is a great ship to start out piracy in. To start off with you might be best going for a buffer setup and then switch to an active tank fit with a small armour repairer once you get some decent capacitor skills. If you want to learn more about Rifter fighting (and other frigates, really) then check out my Rifter PvP guide. Basically just go out there and get some fights. You'll learn what you're doing from there. Good luck! |

Debatable, and you're missing the point. Other race's frigs can be just as good or better than a rifter so advising an sp starved noob to drop 20 days into mini for it is ridiculous. He should choose the frigate of whichever race's battleships he wants to fly further down the line. |

Edited by: Morel Nova on 05/06/2009 15:45:02 Rifter! then work your way up. rupture is a really great pirate ship too. same with hurricane.
incursus is also a decent frig, but will pretty much lose to a rifter every time with equal player skill. gallente cruisers work great for piracy but require lots of drone skills.
punisher only truly shines if you use minmatar weapons on it really, and amarr crusiers are terrible.

Flavour of the month?! The Rifter is simply the most versatile T1 frigate of the lot. The Punisher lacks mid slots, the Tristan lacks range, and the Kestrel has to sacrifice tank for tackle. Also the skills you learn to fly the Rifter well will stand you in good stead with any race that you eventually decide you want to fly.
Originally by: kera3 Seeing as you have just started out, I would suggest an Incursus before going to the Rifter. It's less skill intensive, and still a nasty combat ship. I love my Incursus.
The Incursus is a great ship but not really any less skill intensive than the Rifter. You still need gunnery, drone, navigation, and armour skills for the Incursus. |

I agree with the rifter, and Minmatar have among the best T1 ships in every category sub-BS.
Rifter/Rupture/Stabber/Hurricane is a great choice to have when looking for disposable ships.
