Currently, you can only detect probes via your directional scanner if you click your overview settings off. And even this is problematic at best. I would like to see probes added to the overview options, sooner rather than later so that I can click a little check-mark and create a more specific overview tab.

Yes, this is because I am a low-sec mission runner. No, my ship was not violenced. Almost, though.

This is neither Assembly Hall nor Feature & Ideas forums..
However, I would like to see a complete overhaul of the Intel-system (Local, Directional Scanner, Solsystemscanner, Overview, Solarmap...).

I consider this a significant bug. Something CCP missed and they should correct next patch.

About what feels like six eternities ago Zrakor promised that mission runners would get better tools to detect intrusion attempts into their missions. Nothing has surfaced so far, and the best tips you can get are
"Refresh your directional scanner every ten second" "Drop a can at the warp-in and hope it decloaks covops" "Stay aligned at all time" "Move away from the warp-in if the mission lets you"
I think the last hint is from the time before an Arazu could easily extend their point to 40km+ and is rather, err, pointless nowadays. Ok, I cringe myself at that pun.
Fact is, there's nothing here to help a low sec mission runner at all. I've given up on that since it was too tedious to watch aggro, drones, respawns, local, scanner and cap all at the same time. In high sec I can jump into a Marauder without worrying that someone will blow it up just for laughs and don't have to decline every third mission just because it happens to lead into a pirate camp.
I suggest that the directional scanner is automated somewhat. Right now you can already pinpoint if someone is near a warpable object by playing with the scan range and angle and lots of scans - it could be simulated with a wait time and even be made skill-dependent. Of course that's taking some player skill out of the game, but it would reduce server load as the server does not need to handle a multitude of scans. Another thing I'd be hoping for is an automated scanner. Right now you scan, receive a long list of objects and scroll down to look for probes. This is both frustrating the player and taxing the server with all the data being sent over teh intarweb, most of them firing needlessly since there are no probes in space most of the time. I am not sure how probe launching is currently handled programmatically, but if a ship could set a scanner to "Watch for XYZ" and every time XYZ is deployed all ships watching for it are being sent a notification about it I think the load would go down overall too. So instead of lots of scans that force the server to send out all sorts of data about objects in space the actual launching of the probe would set off a notification event. Even if the server would have to check all players in the system to see if they are watching for probes that would generate less traffic than a single scan.

Edited by: Faith O''Siras on 05/06/2009 14:53:08 I don't care about probe filtering. I want to be able to add probes to my overview so that I can see them on the directional scanner better. I constantly see threads talking about mission runners in low-security and how you can *see probes on the scanner*. You can. But they get lost in the mess because you can't filter. I want this fixed.
EDIT: Mods: Why'd you move my topic? This is a bug, not a new feature request. I'm asking CCP to fix something they overlooked.

Actually no, this isn't a bug. It's intended to be this way and always has been this way, or at least as far as I can tell.
CCP intended to make it hard to see probes on the scanner. Why? Because that would be a HUGE nerf to probers. It takes time to probe people down, WAY more time than it takes to scan through your directional scanner if you know what you're looking for.
