I was looking at the cost of super computers and I came across this little bit of info under quasi super computers.
"The PlayStation 3 Gravity Grid uses a network of 16 machines, and exploits the Cell processor for the intended application which is binary black hole coalescence using perturbation theory.[12][13] The Cell processor has a main CPU and 6 floating-point vector processors, giving the machine a net of 16 general-purpose machines and 96 vector processors. The machine has a one-time cost of $9,000 to build and is adequate for black-hole simulations which would otherwise cost $6,000 per run on a conventional supercomputer. The black hole calculations are not memory-intensive and are highly localizable, and so are well-suited to this architecture."

But, why waste your time ranting at me for not finding something interesting? Surely thats even more pointless and obscure. |

Ive heard of these PS3 clusters before and Folding@Home has a PS3 application.
Much like the Sega Genesis vs. SNES, the PS3 is technically a better machine, but just couldn't get the games to win people over early on.
Now if they had made the PS3 backwards compatible to the PS1, I would have bought one instead of the xbox. |

The technology is superiour to that of the XBox but it's really hard to programme for because Sony didn't think about where they were going with this, leading to massive losses.
Unless they call building a highly multi-threaded cpu only good for folding and then losing billions, because of uber high price and lack of interest from game makers, a successful gaming machine.
I own neither an XBox nor PS3 and wouldn't get one if they were offered to me for free.

Why would you pass on the chance to have a free xbox/PS3 which you could either sell, to fund your eve subscription , or to give as generous present to someone?

Damn I would love any kind of electronic device for free from Apple! :P
And honestly, I would love to have a PS3 too, friend of mine has one and honestly I find it more useful and entertaining than the Xbox.
Shame on the not ps1 compatibility issue tho :/ I'm a fan of old games.

well, it's not quite the same thing, but they've just released FF7 for the PS3 and the PSP. it's pretty much an exact port of the PS1 version. i know it's not the same as being able to play all your old PS1 games, but to be honest, they'd look pretty awful on the PS3 with it's hi-res graphics. FF7 works because it's got such a massive nostalgia pull on so many people. but i doubt G-Police would be very good at all. that said, they are slowly converting more and more classic titles - as long as you don't mind buying them all over again now as digital downloads. On original topic...this isn't the first time people have wired up consoles to make a powerful computing cluster. The new rage I believe is using GFX cards with their supremely powerful processors and very fast memory for parallel processing...nVidia developed CUDA technology just for this purpose.
Regarding the PS3/360 argument...the PS3 was simply too expensive at launch for what it was and was so complicated to code for, it turned off many developers. The whole point of a console is that it's significantly cheaper than a PC, more than ~ú200 and it starts to price itself out of its own market, hence why the Wii dominates this generation. Xbox also has the advantage that games developed for it are easily ported to PC (and vice versa). The blu ray player is probably the one significant thing the PS3 has to offer over its rivals and parents/teens are unlikely to buy them for that reason alone.
And to sum up the MS/Sony debate, I think last week's E3 pretty much says everything. Microsoft present Project Natal (and Milo), motion sensing technology way beyond even what the Wii can do, with the potential to revolutionise gaming. Sony released a PSP without a UMD drive, that has 16GB on board storage. You can buy a 16GB memory stick pro duo for ~ú60 and acheive the same thing with an old PSP, except you can still play UMD games as well...pretty pathetic really. |

To bad the PS3 online network is such a **** up...some of those games need to have ranges that need opened in figures of 100s of ports...I kid you not check out the amount of ports FIFA 09 needs, its a right pain in the arse at work...once jokingly advised a customer to call the group of port forward rules "gonna be here all night opening ports". |

As all mightly the ps3 is I still can only managed to shoot of ears off my enemies in kill zone 2, it seems aiming in kill zone 2 is tied into a 'grid' system where you can only lock certain points.
Also fences and powerlines look like rows of pixels still on HD.

If you look at the PS3 simply as a gaming platform, then yes, you will probably be disappointed in comparison to the 360.
However, I didn't purchase my PS3 as just a gaming machine. It has a wide and varied amount of uses for me:
-It is my DVD player. It upconverts standard DVD's to HD (not true HD) and it plays Blu-rays (which if you haven't noticed, won the HD war). With the HDMI and Optical Audio outputs, I get great picture and soudn -I store all of my music on the hard drive. I no longer have to play around looking for the CD, because it's all right there, in order, and ready to play. -I have downloaded hundreds of movies and shorts from various websites and stored them on my PS3, including Clear Skies and Clear Skies 2 (on 42" HD love). -That is just what I do, doesn't even scratch the surface with chat, messaging, video chat, and the slowly expanding Home network. Not to mention that most game companies haven't even been able to use a tenth of the processing power and capabilities of the PS3, which means the titles are only going to get sleeker and shinier.
The primary reason for storing all this digital media? Simple, I can use my PSP-1000 that I bought years ago to access any standard wifi hotspot, turn on my PS3 remotely, and enjoy all my music and movies wherever I am.
Plus I can hit shuffle on my play lists and have non stop good music for about 71 days.
So yes, I chose to purchase the PS3 because of it's capabilites as an entertainment tool, not just a gaming platform. The games that come out for PS3 are just gravy on the side of an already gravy covered dish. |

I've been rather disappointed with this generation.
XBox had a lot of hardware issues, now it's really starting to show its age (just look at any new multiplatform game side-by-side on a 360, a PS3, and a PC with a current generation graphics card).
PS3 never really got off the ground - too expensive for what it is, hard to dev for apparently, seems to make a better computer than a console due to its fancy multi-core CPU which was several years ahead of Intel coming out with anything even remotely comparable.
The Wii is a Gamecube with a neat-o motion controller and is pitched firmly at non-gamers. Even Nintendo fanboys feel abandoned now. |
