Buy something else, the Prius is about as "green" as a Hummer if you consider manufacture and lifetime.

The only place where a Prius would even have a real advantage would be in-city driving, in heavy traffic conditions - on a faster motorway, just about ANY OTHER MODERN car is greener than the Prius. Actually, given typical driving habits (and distances), a "something else" might be greener even if you ignore manufacture and disposal costs For instance, a Volkswagen Polo Blue Motion Diesel is about 5% less polluting on the same distance travelled (give or take a couple of percentages)... and that's before considering just how much safe used battery disposal would cost... and a BMW 320d (yarrr) is barely 25% more polluting even in cityscapes.
However, the "Prius worse than Hummer" thing was an absurdly biased study, with a shocking conclusion just to make a point... of course no reasonable person could buy it if they actually read parts of the study (for instance, the study took "gas usage" as being just a couple of measly percents when calculating total carbon footprint, which any sane person could tell you it's not really accurate... you'd expect at least half of it to be from its regular use, if not more than two thirds).
So... of course a Prius is much better than a Hummer... but there ARE some better alternatives out there, even in the non-hybrid world, and even if you're looking at fuel economy alone. For a hybrid car, the Prius was a decent first step, but its design is not good enough yet to be considered a role model, as it leaves a LOT to be desired : very inefficient engine on the "fuel" side, a much too bulky build, using materials that are quite nasty ecology-wise both to acquire and get rid of. And we haven't even started talking about how fugly it is, or how clumsy it drives.

True Facts, Akita.
It just needs to be said that the Prius is hardly as "green" as its hyped to be.
A Toyota XB is easily greener, and equally as ugly. Either way, Modern day diesels are shockingly efficient, we have european cars boasting 70mpg or more, so the Prius really is the fool's choice. |

You want green? Invest in the Hydrogen Fuel Cell.
Works like petrol, emits only water.
The alarmists will point to the potential for explosions, but as long as they manufacture the car right, this shouldn't be a problem. Besides, you already sit on top of a potentially explosive mixture, and if anyone tells you cars are safe, then take a look at the Ford Pinto, and the famous equation they used that determined that it was cheaper to let people die and pay the compensation, then to fix the fault. And don't fool yourself into thinking it was the only one with safety issues. There are a few currently manufactured cars that have serious design flaws.
Alternatively, eschew the car and travel by public transport. Trains are aready a lot greener than other forms of transport.

As for going green, I'll stick with my bicycle during the nicer months. The amount of money saved on gas alone makes that worth while. Now if I could just find a decently priced electric car for the winter months, I'd be set for the work commute.
I have to agree with the above poster though, there are too many alarmists about the Hydrogen Fuel Cell. Forget about the Pinto for a second, realize that all gasoline burning cars are internal combustion engines.
People are already sitting in something that has hundreds of small, admittedly controlled, explosions. |

Water vapor is the largest green house gas. So you wanna to trade a smaller greenhouse gas for a larger one. I point to the second hottest year on record (first being 1934) 1998, the temps went up around the same time a water vapor surge shot up in the atmosphere caused by el nino. |

Water vapor does not need to be released into the atmosphere. It can just be condensed in the car and disposed of through the normal sewage system. -------- Ideas for: Mining

Ironicaly the grounding of all flights in the USA after 9/11 resulted in a rise in temperature because the vapor they produced was no longer reflecting the suns rays. So with that in mind I hereby torpedo your falty thinking for over 9000 parts per million.
