One thing that has always been a personal pet peeve of mine in every MMORPG I have played is how every characters runs around like Olympic sprinters that never get tired. So far eveything I have seen in the demos for WIS have the avatars actually walking and not runnng.
So will CPP finnally be the ones to give us an MMO that isn't populated by super joggers? Will there really be walking in Walking in Stations?
If CCP can pull that off they just might have me as a customer for life! |

Edited by: Cors on 10/06/2009 20:42:50 I don't know about you, but my "Normal" walking pace is about 50% faster then most folks. I don't have time to take an extra 50% longer to get places.
It's not that I'm important, it's just that a minute here, a minute there.. it all cuts into my eve time.
So I walk VERY fast in real life. Fast enough to get my heart rate up to about 140bpm while walking anything over a block.
The wife thinks i'm trying to race her through the grocery store. She doesn't get it that my "raceing" is my normal walking pace. I'm 6 foot tall, and have a 1 meter pace at full walking speed.

I agree with Cors. Apparently we have more in common that the first 3 letters of our EVE character names. |

From what I've seen in the videos walking pace will be just a casual stroll and they've said there will be no running at all. Also I remember one of the developers saying somewhere that to compensate for the lack of running they will have those "people conveyor belts" you often see at airports, so it won't take half an hour to get from one end of the station to the other. |

To hell with that. I got places to be. If you want to RP that's cool just don't impose it on the rest of us. It's a game.... you know do things you can't in RL. So that the fact that I can run marathons in games has never bothered me much.
Oh yeah most games there is a walk/run toggle. |

They may add a run option only if there is also a 'trip' command you can use to make running people fall over. -------- Ideas for: Mining

I good compromise would be a baywatch type slowmotion running. Think of the possibilites when you add that to a physics engine and gallente women and fashion.

So, Gallente get slow motion running, Minmatar get impressive march and entry, Caldari get stop motion goose stepping and Amarr get mysterious floating. |

I'm the same way. I know that my real life walking speed is faster than my Oblivion character's(when I played) running speed. I "power" walk, essentially. Once I was told, "Geez, [my name], it's not a race, you know." Everyone in my family is that way.
=P
But, still, I do get frustrated seeing all these people running around. Especially in a game like EVE. I can see it in EQ (so much physical exertion is bound to pay off) and COH (super powers...enough said), but in EVE...we spend 24/7 in a sphere of liquid in zero gravity. We're probably not in the best shape =P

Originally by: Karentaki Agreed. I'm sick of seeing people run for no good reason in games.
CCP might have to simply because people are (including me..) way to impatient seing the character snailing forward.
most games have ordinary walking as standard, and running as an option. But, the players always swap it around: dignified walking becomes an option, while running ends into a standard. maybe CCP will include running as an option, and people turning it on permanently?
Anyway, I see really no reason why CCP should not include an running option. Simply because from an gameplay view its not a big deal at all, while from a player view it certainly is... or, should I say, is for me..

No they don't have to, they just include elevators and other means of transport and then you walk at the location like grown-ups.

People run in mmos for the same reason the whiners got WTZ. They lack the patience to enjoy the scenery.
That is why I try to find ways to cater to both.

Some of use don't care to "smell the roses" as it were in the same way you do. As an example I breeze through art museums, and you might take longer. Do I enjoy the art less than you? Subjective at best and can't really be argued one way or the other. No one forces you to WTZ, or run places. (most games have the toggle) People need to stop trying to impose their way of playing on people, and worry about themselves. _________________________ HATERS!!!!

Its implied that its strictly walking. The unfortunate part is that it'll take approximately 6 hours after launch for people to start complaining that "Walking is too slow!"
Running will make it in eventually. |

Well if they're bucking trends, it will be released not un pre nerfed. Whether that means they walk too slow or run not too fast enough nobody can tell. And any statement made will be sufficiently vague as to make sure you never realise that you're just testing software for free. |

Not only implied — they stated it outright at last year's fanfest: no running! For those in a hurry, there will be moving walkways and an ESC-menu. |

Prophetic words. I would bet my life savings on this. 6 hours MAX. More likely 1 hour after the forum will inundated with whiners who can't spell posting drivel like "ccp sux wtf u wanna wwalk too #$@!@$ slow."

If they ever do add running when we get WiS, they will probably make it require stamina so people don't run around at full sprint 24/7. So if you do need to run somewhere in a hurry, you can get a short sprint but you'll tire yourself out so you'll need to catch your breath from being exhausted. |

I doubt they will add it simply because there is no need to run in EVE, with other MMO's you can't access all your shops without moving, WIS is mearly a different way to do this and isn't required at all, you'll be able to play EVE without ever seeing WIS ever, so TBH there is no need to add running its a relaxed alternative to break up the ship spinning, wanna buy your stuff fast just sit in dock and do it like you do now :) |

In Age of Conan, people roleplay alot. And when they do it they walk. Because lets be honest, when was the last time you really ran in RL? Or even jog? I honestly can't remember, there is no reason to run IRL most of the time in your daily life (im not talking sports activities here). You plan everything with the presumption that you are going to walk, not run.
Now, in Computer Games people somehow see walking as a waste of time, even tho playing a computer game in itself is a waste of time, but that is another story.
I don't think running in Stations will break the immersion. The serious roleplayers will walk, the hyperventilating types will run. Or remember movies, where the heros are chased down the hallway by stormtroopers. Or an alert situation where pilots run to their ships after a briefing.
I wouldn't rule out running in station just because it breaks the immersion. It doesnt. Jumping would break the immersion, but not running. Or Jogging, I think jogging is more realistic, yes ;) ---
